I call bull pucky on this rumor. Regular headphones AND an adapter is NOT the way to introduce totally new lightning connected headphones. It's a half measure on a major change. Go all the way or go home. This isn't apples style.
Unfortunately, this IS Apple's style. I agree that the old Apple wouldn't have done this, but they are long gone and the New Apple is certainly capable of a move like this based on their recent track record. It wouldn't even surprise me if they don't include an adapter at all, but try to sell one as an accessory at a ridiculous price, like they did with the USB C adapter on the Macbook.

Not sure a simple adapter could work if Apple is scrapping the headphone jack.

Now if they could only design them to stay in your ear

EarPods were designed for human ears.

What's most maddening to me is that there is no added functionality. Current iPhones can drive audio via lightning and Dragonfly has already built a pretty inelegant but the only possible working solution to this "feature." No true audiophile is going to buy a DAC or set of headphones that will only be usable with an iPhone and the fact they're using lightning instead of usb-c just guarantees this market will be DOA. It's just an incredibly unwise business decision.

You're kind of short sighted here. For starters, a good DAC, DSP & Amp, doesn't have to be a kludgy mess as you suggest as the "only possible working solution":

Second, headphones don't have to have dedicated cables anymore, just like the Audeze doesn't. This is just all so much FUD you're spreading.

The supplied earPods have a volume control on the cable, so the adapter needs to include a DAC but not a volume control. If you have a cable without a volume, the adapter won't help you. Unless that is, Apple decides to include analog out in the lightning port.

You have no idea what Apple has planned for it's Lightning audio implementation. THere's absolutely no reason at all that when a Lightning headphone is plugged into the iPhone and identifies itself as such, that the volume controls on the iPhone won't switch to control the headphones internal amp. And that's what I'm expecting from iOS 10, and Lightning audio.

You will not see anything Bluetooth 5 for 12 to 18 months on the retail market. The standard was just released and there is no silicon for mass market. My take is Bluetooth 5 will be in the iPhone 8 toward end of next year.

Except for Apple. They will have this technology in their products at launch. There's a reason Apple sits on the advisory board of the Bluetooth SIG.

It's pathetic that Apple may, according to the rumors, ship a phone without the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack. Of course the so-called audiophiles will argue the alleged benefits of audio pumped through the lightning port versus an analog signal. The 3.5mm audio/mic jack is one of the few standards that spans the vast array of manufactures from computers to phones ... loosing this "standard jack" sucks! If Apple ships earbuds with a 3.5mm to lighting converter, it just adds insult to injury.
This makes sense. Doing it this way would mean that every iPhone 7 would come with an adapter, so no one could complain that Apple was forcing them to replace their favorite headphones, or to buy more expensive digital headphones in the future, or to buy an overpriced $19 adapter. It's actually a somewhat brilliant tactic.

You're both wrong. If Apple includes an adapter it is an admission they made a mistake by removing it.

The only way to make people happy would be to ship both bluetooth AND an adapter, which would be expensive.

Hardly expensive at all. A $3 part times 10 million iPhones at launch is $30,000,000.00, which is pocket change for Apple. Like I mentioned the other day, use the reserve funds to move the industry forward instead of pointlessly hiding it away in a Swiss Bank Account to just sit there.

Because they don't sound as good...
you obviously have not heard new bluetooth earbuds. compared to the ones that ship with iPhones are you serious? those sound horrible.
go check out the jaybird freedoms that just launched. you'll change your mind about how bluetooth audio sounds nowadays.

I think this is fantastic. Personally I hope Apple considers including only bluetooth headphones with only a lightning cable to charge it. Also a 3.5mm adapter for all those oldies who don't want change.

This way the old has some transition time away from 3.5MM

Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be manufactured without a 3.5mm headphone jack, leading to speculation about the accessories that will be included alongside the two devices.

Lightning-equipped EarPods and wireless EarPods are two rumors that have been bandied about, but a new report from Japanese site Mac Otakara suggests Apple may ship the iPhone 7 with standard 3.5mm headphones and a 3.5mm jack to Lightning adapter to allow them to connect to the new devices.

Mac Otakara's information comes from sources at Computex Taipei 2016 and the reliability of those sources cannot be confirmed. Shipping EarPods with a 3.5mm jack included seems like an unusual choice for Apple, even if an adapter is included in the box.Past rumors, including one from Mac Otakara itself, have suggested Apple will introduce a new EarPods design that connects to the iPhone via Lightning or Bluetooth, something that would better ease the transition away from the 3.5mm jack than an adapter. We've only heard a few rumors about the EarPods, though, so Apple's exact plans remain unclear.

Mac Otakara's report also reiterates claims 256GB of storage will be an option and suggests the iPhone 7 will feature speaker holes on both the right and left sides of the Lightning port, filling the space left by the headphone jack. Rather than introducing stereo sound, the site believes the two speakers will be "on a monaural system."

Rumors about the fate of the space left by the removal of the headphone jack have been mixed. Early rumors pointed towards two speakers for stereo sound, but later rumors and design schematics have cast some doubt on whether the iPhone 7 will feature dual speakers.

A lot of the information we're hearing about the iPhone 7 is mixed, making it difficult to narrow down the exact features we can expect to see, but the removal of the headphone jack is one of the most consistent rumors we've seen about the device. Other expected features include an iPhone 6s-style design with relocated antenna bands, faster LTE and Wi-Fi, a more water resistant casing, and dual cameras for the larger iPhone 7 Plus.

I was hoping they would have released the rumored wireless headphones. I suppose at this point I'd settle for just having them update those horrendous earbuds they have been using for the past 10 years. I wonder how large and onerous the lightning adapter will be, doesn't matter to me because I haven't used wired headphones in years, but it will be interesting to see the public outcry.

You couldn't pry my Jaybird X2's out of my cold dead hands. Although maybe you could, if you replaced them with the newer model the Freedoms maybe you could. Going wireless is awesome.

you didn't have the memory foam tips. i had those they sounded decent with the standard ones that shipped if you could get a good seal but with the memory foam tips made them extremely good. The new freedoms fit in your ear better and sound better too.

I found that the Jaybird X2's were pretty poor and went back to using a cord with a 3.5mm jack

And the adapters they had for the 30pin to lightning when they switched to that?
People cried and moaned but in the end it was a better move.

I say no way is Apple going to give us something for free. Not happening.

Edit: I forgot they do give us Apple stickers so.. that's something.

Edit2: I guess its not really free a 16GB iPhone is $649.99.

Doesn't apple give us macOS, iOS, watchOS, tvOS, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, and Garage Band for free?

Has it already been said nine times in this thread:
"Double-down on leaks"
Steve would have NEVER done this
yet?

Looks like the iPhone 6s will be the sweet spot for those wanting to hang on for another year or two. This also explains why I see Beats Solo2 wired selling like crazy at BestBuy for $79 all colors. Trying to off load inventories before new iPhones drop.

Yeah, probably.... because it's going to be REALLY difficult to snap that included adapter onto your current set of headphones.

I am not saying the new mouse is a bad product per se. But the charging process was designed in a very sloppy way. It's not what I'd expect from a premium product, to lay like a poor dead piece on its back. Not being able to use it immediately after it ran out of battery just adds to it feeling unfinished – it would fit a prototype or 10 bucks item from some Chinese rippoff seller. Apple didn't design the new mouse with all important aspects (which charging is for a mouse on battery) in mind – it feels like they realized last minute: "damn we need to find a way to charge this thing actually…"

lol. I think it was more they hated the idea of a port ruining their clean lines. If it runs out plug it in, get a drink, come back, all day charge. Two minutes isn't too long and it warns you with a good day of charge left.

The more I read about rumors concerning the next iphone the less I wanna buy one. It's turned from a bewildered disappointment to a desire to punish (?) send a message to Tim and co. If you can't come up with a new form factor every 2 years you don't deserve my money. I hope the stock price crashed.

Lol, wut?? Soooo.... if they include the adapter, that's "sad" & the "new Apple", but if they don't... that's opportunistic & they're trying to do a cash grab??
Lol, is there a third choice between including it or not, that I'm not seeing, since you've seemingly condemned BOTH of those??

Yea, because that is so convenient and won't get lost. Good luck with that.
