There were a bunch of phones with higher resolution before Retina even came out. They were all Japanese phones from Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, and etc. They were all fighting for the HD TV market and used their phones to market them.

And their spec sheets never mattered then, in the grand scheme of things. A device is more than the sum of specs and I'd be willing to bet their marketing was the less least of their issues.

Microprocessor design is a lesser feat than buying a display panel. You heard it here first folks

Yes it is.Things like design and display matter more to consumers. The transition from the iPhone 5s to the iPhone 6 had Apple showing record sales in its entire history because people wanted a bigger screen,a better display. There was only a 25% improvement in on the A8 over the A7.Now the iPhone 6s had more RAM,3d touch and a near 50% increase in CPU performance.Sales declined. They touched rock bottom. Not many who had an iPhone 6 cared enough to buy it.The same is applying for the iPhone 7 as well as sales continue to decline

NoW this is purely my opinion but I feel the iPhone 8 is going to beat the record set by the iPhone 6.OLED display, glass body,no home button,Wireless charging. Now THIS is going to get people owning an iPhone 6 to upgrade. You can increase the CPU speed 500% ,yet people wont bother

Apparently "they" are not. As 2 minutes searching on the Note 7 shows: -

and before you try to "counter" this with an equivalent search on the ios forums, consider that you would be proving my point. They most certainly are not "fast enough at this point" and your only reason for wanting to de-emphasise speed as a differentiator is that it doesn't fit your narrative of Apple Bad.

That is NOT the fault of the processor. Its a external unoptimised software issue. For instance, take the iPhone 6 and 6s for example. When you go in Mobile Data and scroll down the list of apps in settings, they both equally lag despite having a better CPU.Throwing hardware at such problems will not solve this issue. So its not a problem of being "fast enough" rather a software optimisation issue

Now, as to how they "get away" with this? Well, I cannot speak for others but for me: -
- The relative coherence of iOS
- The relative security of iOS
- The relative strength of the the App Store (though at this point we're comparing bad to really bad, I'll admit)
- The relative performance of iOS and Ax hardware
- The network effect of having other Apple devices that integrate

The world does not boil down to a spec sheet, a core count, a screen resolution or black level. The real world is much more nuanced but I've been listening to Android guys trying to win a check box battle for nigh on 10 years now and being puzzled when the world doesn't play out that way. At that point the usual fallbacks happen, "isheep", "marketing", "koolaid" - all substitutes for the fact that the world is not a spreadsheet and people don't work that way.

They get away with it because

1)I bought a 4.7 inch 750P display iPhone because I wanted iOS.Given a choice I would have gotten the 1080P iPhone but have no choice as such a phone doesnt exist. So I am compelled to get a lower res phone IF I want iOS.This does not mean I dont care about resolution but I am restriced by Apple

1)They have their very own ecosystem with people entrenched in it and the costs of exit are huge.I have a suite of Apple devices and honestly Android does not play nice with Mac as it does with Windows.I have to use third party tools to mimic functionality inbuilt by default.I own an Apple Watch which does not work with Android. Most of my finance work and spreadsheets needs a Mac so I can never entirely leave this ecosystem and getting the latest iPhone is a necessity if I want things to work together properly. There are things I detest about an Iphone and love in Android like opening rar files,Multi Windows etc but to get them I have to sell of my 600 bucks Watch for a measly price.Nor plausbile

2)Illusion (or the Jobs effect as I like to call it).Apple products thanks to Jobs as I mentioned earlier are seen in a class of their own.Although now the competition is catching up with sleek phones. The design of the Galaxy S7 puts the iPhone 6s plus to shame in my opinion.Samsungjust started record profits while Apple sales continue to decline

3)Apple products are seen as a status symbol in many countries like China which contributes to world wide sales

PS you still never answered how it's possible for Apple's presumably competent competitors to close this marketing gap. Unless it's actual magic they should be able to hire the appropriate people and formula the appropriate strategies, no?

For Samsung to match apple's unique marketing prowess they would need another personal; like Steve Jobs at the helm to come up with their own trademark devices. In absence of such a person they try throwing cash on the marketing budget which wont work

Yup.For Apple customers .Why do you think Apple is replacing the LCD with OLED first time in a decade while processors are upgraded every year.
Because they are able to move past the limitations of the current sub-pixels arrangement, maybe micro-led. Apple doesn't incorporate half-baked technology like some others. But if oled is innovation as you claim, removing the headphone jack is also.

Why are we talking about a decline in sales when there hasn't even been a phone announced? I just don't get that, sorry.
Because this is the only time you have to sell any "Apple is doomed" narrative. Once the iPhone is released and proceeds to rake in obscene sales numbers, the naysayers will have lost any credibility they may have once had.

Android is hurting too with decreased sales. Android is for the masses while iPhone is for the decerning owner who wants quality and a phone that will not blow up and catch fire while charging.

Apple will do will no matter what.
Or bend in your pocket...... Oh.

How do you know what matters to "consumers"? You only know what matters to yourself. I admit design matters to me, but I like the current 6 series design so that's not an issue. But I like form and function of which the iPhone excels at. You can have oled, I want the functionality.

The 6s was a blockbuster with December 2015 being the best on record after hearing the naysayers say the "Apple is doomed narrative" for at least 3 years in a row.

As far as stutter, mobile data, where I spend most of my time on an iPhone.

The CPU may not "sell" the phone at the store, but that satisfaction rating is what brings people back to iPhone. And the powerful CPU is the thing that makes the phones work well for several years. They are a key part that allows the phones to hold their value.

So in the long run, the CPU is one of the most important parts of the phone and Apple is kicking butt here. These improvements will keep paying off.

To be honest, Apple seem to have created a rod for their own backs. To have a business model that says EVERY Autumn I'm going to release a new model is just asking for trouble.

If Apple needs a quick cash injection the easiest way is to announce tomorrow that after the iP7 there won't be a new iPhone for 3 years as they are focussing on the MacBook (or whatever). The 7 will fly off the shelves.

Didn't you post that you were going to get an iPhone 7?

I always buy the number changing iPhones because I like new tech.I am not blind though. This is not a worthy upgrade based on the looks of things but then again my iPhone 6 is showing age issues and I am very sensitive to old tech so I am getting the iPhone 7 Day 1.

Good luck if you are hoping Samsung will buck the trend of the sub pixel arrangement which they (successfully) implemented on their phones for years.Apple is using Samsung as the prime supplier for OLED and with iPhone 8 commencing production a few months from now,the display is probably already in production as we speak

I almost guarantee the iPhone 8 will destroy the iPhone 6 sales because of this

We ridiculed Apple for finally breaking out of their shell and delivering the types of devices people have wanted, but as much fun as that was there’s no doubt it did good things for them as a company. Confirmation of that fact arrived ahead of today’s stock market opening as Apple has reported record-breaking revenue and sales numbers. And when we say record-breaking, we mean there’s possibly no other company that could sell this many smartphones in one quarter.

Apple reported a ridiculous $74.6 billion in revenue for their fiscal Q1 2015, an increase of 30% year-over-year, thanks to the sale of 21.4 million iPad tablets, 5.5 million Mac computers and — you may want to sit down for this — 74.5 million iPhone devices. Most companies would be ecstatic to make that over the course of a year or two, so for Apple to rake all that in within just one quarter speaks volumes about the company’s new direction.

To put that all into perspective, Apple’s big quarter joins an exclusive list of the top 5 quarterly results of all time. The other four? Oil companies. Just think about that for a second. There is no bigger business than oil, and Apple — a consumer electronics company — has found its way into that territory. In fact, Apple now owns the honor of having the biggest quarter ever in the history of business.

Samsung is the one that stands to lose the most out of them all as they’re atop the totem pole in most parts of the world. The South Korean company, which once soared to new heights on the back of a highly competitive anti-iPhone ad campaign, now has to watch on as the company they halfway owe their growth in the mobile realm to could just as easily dismantle them.

As far as stutter, mobile data, where I spend most of my time on an iPhone.

Not really because as good as their CPUs are their devices still tend to slow down over time like my iPad Mini 1 which was a unusable piece of trash ON iOS 9 and my iPhone 6 slowed down compared to iOS 8

I don't know if I would continue to invest in an eco system if I knew I'd have a 3 year gap in between upgrades. If Apple announced that, personally I would use it as an opportunity to perhaps migrate back to Android.

There's no reason why Apple can not release a decent phone every year and a new facelift model every 2 years. They have the capital and ability but sometimes it seems they hold back knowing people will buy anyway. I'm pretty annoyed with the leaks this year as I get the impression I'd be short changed if I got the iPhone 7.

That will only work temporarily.
Apple is not Koenigsegg or Pagani!

Then don't have a set release plan. Release one by surprise in 5 months time, release the next 18 months later. By telling people that this time next year there will be a new iphone out is hitting the bottom line.

When is the next HTC flagship out? So if you want one you buy the 10.

The current release strategy works perfectly for people like myself on 2 year plans and i think this is the motivation behind it because it boosts sales.

My contract is up now this month so the iPhone 7 is perfect timing. Unfortunately the device they are rumoured to be releasing next year should have been released this year. I'll most probably go from the iPhone 6 now to the 6S.

Apple's role is to make money and I think having such a rigid release strategy is hitting that bottom line. It makes it too easy for the customer to say "I'm not buying the Iphone7 because the 8 is going to be a big thing".

I've only recently joined the Apple ranks due mainly to them doing the unthinkable and releasing a small phone. I've been caught up in the world of Galaxy Note for years but was hankering after a decent, high powered, small phone and viola the SE came along. It hasn't been a cheap transition from Android to Apple by any means but I'm happy. However reading these forums (not necessarily this one) there is a sense of entitlement amongst Apple users of "If you don't release a new phone that is outstanding every year then I WILL go on the Interweb and I'll scweam and I'll scweam until I make mythelf sick"

I think entitlement comes with users of any product, not just the iPhone. There are plenty of iPhone bashers on here who rave about the features of the Galaxy's and jump around when it's not right.

The iPhone is an expensive product and if they release a lacklustre device, I think anybody is within their rights to use their freedom and share opinions. I don't feel entitlement myself because there are plenty of alternative options including an older device.

People of other devices tend to jump around when the current one has bugs whereas in Apple world, there's a lot of jumping around because the next one isn't what they want it to be. Me, if it doesn't do what I want (and my needs aren't the same as everyone else's) then I buy something else.

I predict the upward trend has ceased, and we've entered a period of plateau. This year could be a dip, but next year's sales will bounce right back if not increase.

Some will abandon the iPhone ship this year bc the aesthetic differences won't be significant enough to flaunt.

Some will jump aboard bc their SS Sammy went up in flames. ;)

I predict a wash.

Well said. I think overall, sales are plateauing for a couple of reasons. First, many people already have one. Second, people are keeping them longer as the upgrades don't seem as significant.

I personally don't believe in stereotypes in this context. I don't think iPhone users are any different and I've been on forums since my Android days. It's also shaky ground when you criticise a perceived mentality of people taking part in the discussion.

I remember discussing bugs I experienced on Android phones only to be called a liar so I've seen extreme posters from both sides.

Yes.I am considering the 6S too but that model only has 3d touch extra.I want a new phone. Its been nearly 2 years since I last upgraded.I already use a Galaxy S6 Edge at work and have no interest in the S7 for now

I always upgrade my tech yearly generally including my PC video cards, processors etc except for Apple who I used to have a 2 yearly cylce planned out

The 6S has a little bit more than just 3D Touch. It has the increased RAM that you were miffed about in the iPhone 6, Live Photos, faster chip and 4K recording. I think it's a nice upgrade from the iPhone 6 at this point.

I thought you said you use the iPhone because it's the only device compatible with your work? If you claim to use an S6 Edge at work, what would be stopping you using Samsung for personal use?

I still don't think there is a large screen flagship device that has as good battery life as the Plus model iPhones. And that alone is a must have for many.
I love Android more than iOS. But iOS 10 seems to make it less painful. However I don't think I can go back to subpar battery life again unless the new Pixel devices come with huge batteries and a nice design!
