DISAPPOINTMENT.

__________

EDIT: Some people were having difficulty understanding this. This is a comparison between the rumors surrounding the two iPhone models pictured above. I am disappointed by the modest innovation of the iPhone 7 when contrasted with the rumored iPhone 8. That is all, carry on.

But at the same time, shouldn't some stuff be non-negotiable? Say quick charge, wireless charging? Audio jack?
I don't find any of those things required for my use, so I guess they should be negotiable. There's only so much joy they can pack in a given form factor, so literally everything is a trade off.

As I ponder a Lighting to 3.5mm adapter, I'm guessing it's not going to be that cheap because if I am right, the digital signal from the Lighting port to the adapter still needs to be converted to analog for final transmission to the headphone/earbud speakers. So that adapter, just like any Lightening connected device, will require a DAC/AMP to do the same job the iPhone's internal DAC/AMP.

I'm heartbroken at the the 3.5mm jack removal because all the components like the iPhone's perfectly good internal DAC/AMP are still there and being used by the iPhone to drive its internal speakers.
Nah. It should be that expensive to manufacture a low end adapter. We'll eventually see them on Amazon essentials for $10. A quality one will cost more but you'd need that to outperform the current hardware anyway.

if this iphone 7 was the anniversary one with an outstanding design change, i bet no one care about removing the jack.Since everyone else will do in the upcoming years, and i bet the main premium ultrabooks will do so 5 years from now

uh, perhaps my picture didn’t load for you
I think it's more likely that you are implying something you think is obvious without saying it, and the rest of us aren't finding it obvious.... Are you just saying that you're disappointed that next years phone is going to improve on this years? I'd be disappointed if that wasn't the case...

Sorry, I disagree. It's been 4 straight quarters of decline year over year. How many quarters does is take to make a trend for you? Apple is going to lose customers simply by removing the headphone jack, which will keep some new customers from switching to Apple, as well as causing some others not to upgrade. I don't know how you can argue otherwise. What percentage of potential customers will this affect? That's up for debate. But it will happen, and I contend that there's no way adapters, licenses and headphones can make up for the loss, no matter how reasonably small. And that's exacerbated when you consider that most of the people who will eschew the new iPhone on that basis are likely the ones who would have been buying the adapters and headphones.

All the rumors point to some very specific upgrades that will draw some very specific customers (outside of the usual annual upgraders), mostly involving camera tech in the largest and most expensive iPhone. Otherwise, it appears to be a relatively uninspired upgrade. Seriously, what's so impressive to you here that's going to be readily apparent to the average iPhone customer? Given that, I expect that this launch will nominally draw a lower number upgraders than the 6s, even without taking into account the removal of the headphone jack.

So taken as a whole, unless more die-hard headphone jack users agree with you that the feature set of the iPhone 7 is so impressive that it makes it worth the higher cost of upgrading and inconvenience of switching to wireless or Lightning/adapter headphones, then I think it's much more likely that Apple is going to see sales decline, and profits slip again this quarter. Add to that the competition is going to actively market Apple's lack of a headphone jack as a reason to chose them. And for many that will appear to be true, especially considering the higher cost of entry into Apple's ecosystem to get the better tech Apple will be offering for a premium price. That doesn't mean that Apple won't still draw customers to the 6S or SE as a less expensive alternative considering everything else Apple offers, but that only drops Apple's margins lower as well.

And I think Apple knows this, which is why the 7 is likely as uninspiring an upgrade as they've ever offered. It's likely going to a year before Apple sees the demand for the iPhone turn around after such a major change. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple's 2017 sales improve year over year as reviews and word of mouth boost interest in whatever new audio tech they're offering. But unless there's something amazing going to drop on Wednesday that hasn't yet leaked as you suggest, based solely on what we expect, I'm on record as saying this iPhone is going to have a lower sales quarter than the iPhone 6s and likely the iPhone 5s.

A couple of problems in your analysis. There haven't been four straight quarters of decline. There have been two! The first ever drop was in April of this year followed by the quarter ending in June.

Second, you are comparing an all time record year with this year. Important to consider more than one year period. For example, the iPhone 7 could have a fantastic Christmas quarter, but still be less than the all time record Christmas quarter of 2015.

The other problem is you that you are making the mistake of the Apple bashers, of which you aren't, in ignoring the history of the iPhone. Beyond its inception, it has always been iterative improvements, of which this year is shaping up to be , if rumors are correct, one of the largest number of improvements ever, to wit: Double base memory, double max memory, increased battery life, stronger, sharper screen with better color, increased water proofing, increased dust proofing, Optical Image stabilization, new low light camera, improved flash, new duo lens system, improved speaker sound and volume, improved microphones, new faster, more powerful processor, new digital lightning earbuds with two way interaction and other benefits, new color choices, and that's just what has been leaked. You may be dismissive of each of these, but most users will find these all welcome improvements and a compelling reason for many of them to upgrade.

Finally, people don't care about the 3.5 mm jack per se, they just want to be able to get good sound or be able to use their "connected devices." A huge number of people just use whatever headphones that Apple puts in the box. Those people will plug in their new lightning earbuds and not think twice about. Another large number never use headphones and they will love the improved sound from the new speaker set up or not notice as they stream through BT which Apple is likely to announce an improved version of. The other group that has legacy headphones they want to use will put on the adapter and forget about it. All of the above will love the improvements that will come from the lightning phones, e.g., two way interaction, etc., that Apple will explain on Wed, and all of the many other improvements I've listed.

A very tiny number of people, hugely outweighed by those who are attracted to the above, will give up all they love about the iPhone and the benefits of the Apple eco system and all of the new improvements because they are so uniquely wedded to using their legacy equipment without an adapter.
Sales across the industry may decline for all sort of economic and other reasons, but it won't be because of some extreme devotion to a jack.

I don't know. I can't answer that. To me, quick charge, to use an example, is a feature that I don't care about. Unless someone dropped into the survivor set, there is always juice somewhere. Wireless charging I have never once said, except maybe in my car, I want wireless charging. And if it was so important, I would get a mophie case, but I don't have a mophie case.

So to some, they may care about some of these non-negotiable features, I don't.

Okay, what about a bigger battery capacity in a smaller profile? Like Samsung put a 3000 mAh battery in the S7? Can't say no to having a better battery.

DISAPPOINTMENT.

You left a few things off the iPhone 7 which were covered in this article. It seems to me no matter what Apple does there will be folks such as yourself that will be disappointed. This happens on every single release. You either buy it or you don't. It's a very simple decision in my book.

My son currently has an 3 year old Android and has decided he wants to go with an iPhone. He said why don't you upgrade and give me your old one as I would be happy with it. So, I just may do that, but otherwise I would be content to wait till the Anniversary edition to upgrade. I am already rocking the iOS 10 beta and the 6S Plus runs it very well.

yes, next year if the rumours are true and they go with a outstanding design, the sells will reach another record

I want better battery efficiency along with a bigger battery. In my case, I'm okay with the battery life, as I said in my daily routine I have lots of juice around me, plus an anker 26000 mah battery. I went abroad for 5 days and never plugged into a wall once. So a bigger battery would be nice along with increased battery efficiency.

Agreed! I recently got stuck for almost 24 hours at the airport due to poor weather. I accidentally put my charging cable in my suit case rather than my laptop bag. When I realized this I immediately put my phone in low power mode. I still used it a good bit. What I found funny is that my co-worker with Android phones plugged in at least 2 times to fully charge their phones and when I got home that next morning at 7 AM I still had 18% battery life after 24 hours. I used my phone as much as they did. So, anything they can do to improve battery is greatly appreciated. But the iPhone 6S Plus in lower power mode is a beast. :)

It's certainly has somewhat of a "wow" factor if youre coming from a 4s or older, sure

Otherwise it's gonna be a great update for those who have their 2 year contracts ending from the 6/6+/5s/5c line up in late 2014 (provided the lack of headphone jack isn't a big deal)

But for those who purchased a 6s/6s+, dual camera aside (which I think has tons of potential),make no mistake this is going to be a very small upgrade over the 6s (the new colours are to help justify spending a grand on a new phone you really didn't need ;)....seems to work on me every time haha)

Why do you characterize doubling of base memory, double max memory, new faster, more powerful processor, new stronger, sharper screen with better color, improved battery life, improved waterproofing, faster charging, Optical Image stabilization, new duo flash, new microphones, new better speaker sound and volume, new low light camera, new duo lens system, new color choices, new lightning headphones with duo interaction capability and other options, and improved BT, and that's just what has leaked, as a "very small upgrade?" Whether it makes sense for someone to upgrade is another matter, but this is an impressive list of improvements over the 6s, maybe the biggest total list of improvements in any year over the previous model.

Yeah that didn't happen, IPhones don't last that long and even Apple will admit that and no one believes you.

Excellent analysis. Pretty much how I see it, based on previous launches and historical data.

LOL, one thing I don't have to do is convince anyone. I know what I experienced and rather you believe me or not does not matter to me. But please show me where Apple says that if you have your phone in low power mode it won't possibly last 24 hours. I call BS, but please show us where Apple has documented this. I know you can't, but put up or shut up.

All the good stuff from Apple always seem to come next year. It's always in the pipeline and it's always something people can't live without, according to Cook, not forgetting 'amazing' and 'you'll only see this from apple'.

It's time to amaze me with some serious computers with state of the art tech now. If that's too much asking, at least bring the macs up to today's standards with justified pricing. Thank you Apple!

I wish their was a dislike button for posts like this. You earned it.
Dislike buttons are antisocial. Nothing false about my statement. Just being honest. Expressing my dissatisfaction in Apple. In big letters to drive the point home. Maybe you don't see it the same way. And. That's okay.
