But to make it water resistant they did have to use a seal...:D

I'm sorry, I'll let myself out.
It took me a minute... but I eventually got it. You can stay.

No one. We just actually don't bother. Because it is IMPLAUSIBLE they would lie in that manner. You don't test the new gold Rolex watch to make sure it's gold. You don't take your engine apart to make sure it's 1.8 litres. You take it on trust because in this world of reputation and regulation you take it on trust.

If the phone lenses get scratched, or the paint peels on the Rolex or the car doesn't perform as you feel it should, then you look into it. Until then you just get on with life and stop picking it apart.

I guess every Volkswagen owner had the same perspective as you do...:p

Well said! I agree 100%.

Micro USB and USB-C are rated for 10,000 insertion/removal cycles. Micro USB has proven itself to be durable and I've seen devices and cables from 2010 that still function fine. The pressure tabs on the micro USB are actually a benefit as they're replaced with the cable once worn out instead of replacing the port. Apple doesn't list the insertion rating for lightning connector and the general consensus is it's not as durable.

The durability issue is typically with the wire covering fraying/separating or the wiring itself becoming defective due to bending near the connection point (headphone use), not the insertion or removal of the connector itself. That's going to be true of pretty much any inexpensive set of headphones with thin wiring. That's also one of the reasons that wireless headphones are gaining in popularity. It eliminates one of the most likely reasons for failure of the headphones.

Bold: This is complete nonsense, reason, not one single person uses this port the same, some won't ever use the headphone while others will use them more than charging the phone, so it could be from zero extra wear on the port until more than double, even triple or quadruple.
I came to the comments to post something like this, and couldn't have put it better myself! Good job!

The difference is that it's pretty easy to verify whether or not it's sapphire crystal. It's not as easy to verify if a car is cheating on emissions in a subversive manner.

There are two likely scenarios here:

1) There is a coating on the crystal that is scratched, and not the crystal itself
2) The mineral pick itself is powdering off onto the glass, giving the appearance of a scratch.

And then there's the third and less likely scenario:

Apple is lying about something which doesn't take much effort to verify.

Personally I would go with #1 or #2. Assuming they are lying without further verification is intellectually lazy.

They didn't. The "scratch" is residue of the mineral pick that has adhered to the surface of the sapphire.

nope. those are clearly deep scratches. Are you just regurgitating words you heard from corning's GG5 response?

...because level 6 mineral picks are common items found in a purse. GTFO.

no but dust and dirt are everywhere. It just takes some tiny little piece of quartz (sand) to scratch.

It was a solid video until he started begging everyone. "OMG JUST WAIT UNTIL I TALK ABOUT THE SUPER CONTROVERSIAL HEADPHONE JACK PLZ SUBSCRIBE TURN ON EVERY NOTIFICATION YOU HAVE OR ELSE YOULL NEVER LEARN THE SHOCKING TRUTH. PLZ LEAVE A COMMENT ON MY PAGE ABOUT NO HEADPHONE JACK PLZZZZ"

So not complete nonsense then. You’ve just stated yourself it could be double.

Shame on Macrumors for giving traffic to these hacks.

how is this not news? this is a legitimate data set that shows that the camera lens cover is not sapphire as Apple advertises.

He did the same test last year on the 6s and no such scratches appeared on the camera.

I think that the 7's home button is clearly not sapphire, they never said it was and don't advertise it that way. But the camera IS advertised with sapphire the same as previous iphones and it appears that may be a lie.

Read the above statement again, it clearly says so, but here you are:

Right, it's says IF you use it as he suggests, equal use between headphone and charging you double the wear rate for the port. That is not inconsistent with what I wrote. Obviously if one uses the headphone port less than they charge the wear rate will be different, hence YMMV. BUT if you use headphones the lightning port is going to wear out sooner than if you don't. Not that complicated to understand.

What's the "defined lifespan" then? If he doesn't know what it is, then he doesn't have a point to make. What if the "defined lifespan" is 20 years of plugging/unplugging?

Right, just like doctor's don't have a point when they tell you if you sun bathe all day you drastically increase your chance of melanoma but they can't tell you exactly when it will develop. Yup, ignore them. No point at all because they can't tell you when.

Like I need some asshat that goes so far out of his way to get a phone for the express purpose of destroying it (which ultimately contributes to my not getting one on launch day) to tell me that it is inadvisable to sit on it, drive over it with my car, whack it repeatedly with a diesel-powered back hoe, etc.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with people.

BUT DID YOU SEE HOW EASILY IT SCRATCHED WITH REPEATED USE OF THE KNIFE DIRECTLY TO THE BACK?

/sarcasm

Seriously, these are not real world tests and are way more aggressive than anyone should ever be with their several hundred dollar phone.

Macrumors you have it wrong.

Apple doesn't say the home button is made of Sapphire. It says the camera lens cover is.

This bendit dude is wrong.

Nowhere on Apple iPhone spec page does it say the home button is Sapphire.

"Elsewhere, the new Taptic Engine home button stands up to the assaults of a razor blade, but suffers a deep scratch with a mid-level hardness pick. JerryRigEverything claims that this proves it is regular glass and not sapphire, contradicting Apple's own specifications for the phone."

From Apple :

Both models:
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Six‑element lens
  • Quad-LED True Tone flash
  • Panorama (up to 63 megapixels)
  • Sapphire crystal lens cover ( thats the camera lens cover )
