No reason why an electrical socket can't be made waterproof and still allow conductivity (just need to make it capable of being a tight enough fit that the water bridging conductors is negligible, or take advantage of low-wattage over long distances like with waterproof headphone jacks). I don't think the 3.5mm headphone jack is actually a problem there, though. It can be tightly sealed from intrusion, and given the current and distance between contacts short-circuiting due to water is minimal. See http://www.amazon.com/Aduro-Waterpr...883&sr=8-8&keywords=waterproof+headphone+jack as a cheap example of a product with a waterproof headphone jack.

The harder part of "waterproof" is that generally speaking the public doesn't understand what that means at all. There are standards for depth of water (and salinity of water) to which the product can be safely submerged, but people hear "waterproof" and assume they can take it to the bottom of the ocean and all will be well (see reviews on the above link for examples). The deeper you allow the device to go the harder it gets to maintain water tightness, as pressure increases linearly with depth but expense (meaning, monetary expense as well as design tolerances and necessity of effects on external product design) to achieve water-tightness is super-linear with pressure (in the shallow ranges; once you get to a certain pressure level the curve almost flattens out again). And, of course, having a bog-standard headphone jack indicates that any old headphones (most of which are NOT water-proof at all) can be plugged in, and people will blame the phone for any issues arising from their headphones shorting out while in the pool.

All that said, I'd love to see a toilet-proof (and, er, subsequent sanitization-proof) iPhone. I'd also love to have an iPhone which could take me jumping into the pool in an emergency if necessary (which caused the premature death of my old Treo 700 many a year ago). Hell, not having to worry about it dying in a sudden rainstorm would be just great too (appears the 6S is at this level, but not guaranteed as such).

Maybe they have two lightning ports. LiquidMetal body would mean no antenna lines. I think the protruding camera stays, gives more depth to the lens and reduces shadows in photos when a cover is on the phone.

this stuff sounds nice and all, and i'm guessing waterproof will be big for some people's lifestyle, but none of it really grabs me.

i'd really like something more substantial in either the battery (at least some faster charging if not longer life), or the screen, which isn't *bad*, but the 326 pixel density from 2010 is a noticeable step down from most everything else out there, even the 6+... and if they wait till the 8 to bump the resolution, that'll be 8 year-old technology. o_O

I don't need waterproof, because I'm not clumsy. More RAM, a better camera, and no antenna lines that are visible, and I'm totally sold!

If it looks like that I’ll buy two. Puleeeezzz Jony and all will be forgiven. I’ll also stop moaning about the 16GB base storage. (I’ll still moan about the camera if it sticks out tho).
That’s the best looking phone I’ve seen to date from any manufacturer. Not being waterproof isn’t a deal breaker either.

Just bought a 6S but I agree, if it looks as good as that then wow.

No band is a big yes but no 3.5 is a big no. You cannot charge it and listening by earphone at the same time? That's ridiculous.

As a non S-generation year, the iPhone 7 is expected to be a big step-up from the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, in terms of design and functionality, when it launches next year.

This comment is inaccurate. Yes in terms of design but not necessarily in terms of functionality. S-type updates can receive more features in terms of functionality compared to the non S-generation counterparts. Most notable is the many more features that the iPhone 3GS received over the 3G (which was simply a new design, 3G connectivity and A-GPS).

No band is a big yes but no 3.5 is a big no. You cannot charge it and listening by earphone at the same time? That's ridiculous.

Haha dude that will happen. The same way you got to charge the apple pencil via the iPad pro connect.
They will do it!

I've wondered it wireless charging might be accomplished using the AppleWatch charging cord? I could see the Apple logo on the back of the phone being made into a mating surface for the wireless puck. Many cases already have circular cutouts for the Apple logo. Making that a charge point would ensure that more cases keep the logo exposed.

Engineers don't have to stress too much on the regular releases compared to S models.

I don't understand this logic at all. How could a complete redesign be less stressful on engineers?

New hardware design means there will be unforeseen issues (iPhone 4=reception issues, iPhone 6=structural issues) and they run the risk of people not liking the new design. Not to mention with an outer aesthetic redesign, they are still updating all of the internal components. The S line would obviously be less of a stressor, as the design is already established and they are able to fix whatever plagued the original design. There is a much better chance of people being pleased with the already familiar design, improved, than an entirely new look. It only makes sense that an internal update in the same chassis would be less of a struggle than redesigning the entire device from scratch.

Regarding design,
Quick mock-up of how it should look like.

Apparently I'm the only one who quite likes the antenna bands. I love the contrast of the white band against the gold frame. I'm not saying I would miss them if they were gone, but I do quite like them.

Same with the protruding camera, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

So...what trivial thing DO you complain about then?

If they make the phone not incredibly slippery, I might actually be able to use it without a case. I'm afraid to hold my 6S Plus without a case on it.

My top wish is to get rid of as much bezel as possible. Just enough for the top camera and Touch ID/home button and none on the sides.

Make the front glass stronger and the back more comfortable to hold so I don't need to put it a case with a screen protector.

A virtual home button and smaller bezels would really kick butt! They could get the size of the 6+ closer to the current 6. Now make it waterproof with better battery life. I'm still in the return period for my 6S, should I take it back and wait for the 7? Or better yet, wait for the 7S since that will fix all of the 7's shortcomings? Decisions decisions. I make life saving decisions all day long. I don't need this kind of stress!! :D

Apple pretty much acknowledged the bending issues with iPhone 6 by reinforcing the metal chassis in 6S. Although most people use case, this should not be taken as an excuse for poor design. I feel that the entire device should be contained in the metal enclosure and making the device thinner at the cost of parts hanging out isn't good design.

Regarding the plastic phone, I kinda like the iPhone 5C for its clean look:D. Or they could intelligently integrate antenna bands like the iPhone 5S design. I find the iPhone 6 antenna bands ugly.
NO THEY DIDN"T ACKNOWLEDGE ANYTHING.
Man, I'm of the total lack of logic.
BTW, they're continued selling the 6 with the "fault", for 15 months after that; selling 100M more of them.

The Aluminium 7000 was introduced in the watch and that's a much more plausible explanation of why it
ended in the phone and not what a piece of crud moron did on youtube for clicks and his audience of sycophants.

I'm personally waiting for the iPhone 7 that I'm upgrading to from an iPhone 5. I skipped the as the 5 still functioned great at the time and I don't like getting S-editions.

Anyway, if Apple does away with the 3.5mm headphone jack, it looks like I'll have to get their $39 lighting to 3.5mm connector so I can still use it with my current headphones and audio equipment. :/

Please make it smaller than the current iphone 6s and hopefully lighter too than the 6s. Less than 130 gram is good. Just like the iphone 6.

Apple Should take on this look.they should utilise the whole Phone.Because i myself don't find the border useful if anything it takes you away from what your viewing on your iPhone.i reckons thats whats stopping a lot of people from switching to iPhone from other devices. So Apple should take notice & use every bit of the screen to provide more content & resolution to the Screen.

What I'd like to see:
  • 4", 5" and 6" sizes with reduced bezels
  • Rumored "dSLR" quality camera system utilizing multiple cameras
  • Increase in battery rather than reduction in thickness
  • True @3X displays on all models. Not necessary as I can only slightly tell a difference, but they'll be fast enough so why not just standardize there forever?
  • Waterproofing to at least 1m
  • It doesn't even need to be faster. Just take the processor efficiency improvements and put it all towards battery life. The 6s is plenty fast for a phone. Even the 6 would be good enough if it had the 2GB of RAM. More speed is always nice but the 6s just sings along already. But speed might be necessary for new camera tech?
  • Simplify the headphone jack into the Lightning port, and use a built-in universally programmable Apple Sim that doesn't have a door
  • Build TouchID into the display to reduce the bezel even more. Perhaps tweak 3D Touch to have an extra level of pressure to go home? That's a tough one to solve, but solve it!
  • Something like the rumored "liquid metal" enclosures that are super strong, light and seamless. At least get rid of the bands. Though it's not like I see them!
  • Sapphire display coating. Keep it strong but coat it somehow to make it completely scratch resistant.
