I´ve been saying this all along. In 2011 there were rumors of two iPhones, a 4S and a teardrop shaped 5 with a bigger screen. We all know what we got then.

Here seems very similar, and frankly all those rumors of the iPhone 8 coming next year having everything everyone has every wanted in iPhone, well seems a bit too far fetched. I think this is more in line with what we shouls expect unfortunately.

Jesus Christ ... does anybody read anymore??

"Multiple rumors suggest Apple plans to release three new iPhone models next year, including updated 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models with traditional LCD displays and a larger premium model with an OLED display and glass casing

If this report is accurate, it could signify Apple's plans to release a completely overhauled glass-backed iPhonewith a curved, bezel-free OLED display and wireless charging at the high end of its 2017 smartphone lineup, while making only incremental upgrades to its traditional 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones with LCD displays"

I totally agree!! People like to jump a conclusion right away. Apple's plans to release a completely overhauled glass-backed iPhonewith a curved, bezel-free OLED display and wireless charging at the high end of its 2017 smartphone lineup, while making only incremental upgrades to its traditional 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones with LCD displays"

I don't know why people nowadays start complaining about a thing that does not even exist...just wait for the real product and STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT NOTHING!!!

If only these stupid analysts did not exist...

At this point, I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT DONE with Apple, but with MacRumors...this forum has become the haunt of trolls and flamers, that's enough to make me go away...
We have other threads. Skip these crazy rumors ones. I personally like to read them and then wait and see how the reality compares when the release finally does happen.

so you're saying that all the color variants of the iPod and iMac that Apple released during Job's tenure didn't actually happen???

I didn't infer that is what OP was saying at all. But I can't recall an iPod model design during it's heyday that was continued for 3 years. The design was constantly being modernized and tweaked until the iPhone was released and sales dropped to the floor.

Macs are completely different. No on expects computers to get a major aesthetic makeover every 3 years. They are more complicated, more of an appliance -- not as "personal" as phones, and also consumers don't turn them over as often as small consumer electronics. People usually keep computers until they die so no need to try to lure consumers to upgrade to a new model annually or biennially.

back in my day we salivated over faster processors, memory and larger storage capabilities. now a day's you people consider a superficial change in shape a breakthrough but ignore best in class processors, new technologies like 3d touch, best in class battery life and cameras that take unbelievable pictures. really sad. the current iPhone shape is extremely comfortable to hold and the jet black color is very grippy (doesn't easily slip out of my hand). I don't see much of a need to change it.

I'm not sure if this is an agreement or a backhanded nod of approval or what....

I've not been arguing on internals. I've been speaking SOLELY of form-factor.

Yes, if you open the discussion to internals, the argument of form-factor in terms of evolution becomes irrelevant (in my opinion).

I'm just trying to get people to look back at the path of the product and realize that expecting an entirely new form-factor for the next iPhone would be a major departure from generations past. I don't see how that's so hard to grasp.

Back then it was in, we have gone away from bright coloured electronics for some time.
no "we" haven't. have you seen the color variants of the headphone market? Trends change over time and we've had the steampunk Apple look for a while now. Apple (and Steve Jobs) are trend setters. If Apple starts to release iPhones in different colors (which they basically do now in muted tones) the rest of the industry will follow. A red iPhone will be out of stock after a few hours of availability.

I wouldn't believe this for a second. I think this is a rumour someone got from the Product (Red) campaign that was going on just recently. Apples red products are exclusive to that campaign so it just wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.

Apple is known for donating its (RED) product revenue to the Aids Foundation. Do you honestly think that Apple would donate all the revenue from its RED iPhone to a research foundation? 100% definitely not. Considering it would be a new coloured phone, it would probably be one of the best selling colours, and that would mean that Apple would be donating a **** ton of its profits. Doesn't make any sense from any viewpoint you look at it from.

No chance we won't see a new form factor for the 10 year anniversary.

More likely the 7 will remain on sale with a new colour.

I found it surprising that Apple would pass up the opportunity to profit off of existing R&D by milking the iP7 design for another cycle. Would still like to see a special release for the 10th anniversary, but this is the new apple. Release products with the minimum amount of innovation and the maximum amount of profit.

And while I desperately need a new desktop, I'm getting the impression that I'd be a fool to wait for the early 2017 iMac when we all know it's going to be a crap value, jacked up pricing, nominal performance gains, the same chassis and less ports.

Who the stupid starting a rumor a jump into iPhone 8 right away. Considering that Apple is already in a position where it can disappoint a loyal hardcore fan, but regular customers will buy their products and sell like a hotcakes.

Because the 7 is really a 7ss people expected Apple to take a year off to make something really special instead of another incremental upgrade phone. But you are correct, the way cell phone plans work now it doesn't make any sense to not upgrade annually, junk release or not, so Apple really isn't under any pressure to come out with something as spectacular as the original iPhone. It really can paint the old model red, call it "all new," and go back to bed. Yes, it disappoints those of us who were mesmerized by the companies products years ago, but you are right, they don't need to be the innovative company now. They can be GE and just let the money pile up like a snow in a blizzard.

what?

What do you mean 3 years of the same design? I mean, yea, so? Let me go back a little bit for you, not quite to the beginning but back a ways.

iPhone 4 - squared off edges, glass front/back
iPhone 4s - same as 4, better internals

iPhone 5 - squared off edges like the 4. Minor design change
iPhone 5s - same as 5, better internals

iPhone 6 - rounded edges, all aluminum body
iPhone 6s - same as 6, better internals

iPhone 7 - rounded edges like the 6. Minor design change
.....

Are you seeing the pattern? The iPhone 4, 4s, 5, and 5s were all similar designs. Likewise, one could fully expect the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and whatever's next to follow suit.

To be distraught about no "major update after THREE years" means you haven't been paying attention.

Could you be any more of a condescending, smug *******?

I would just like to ask everyone a relatively serious question – Why do you want a new design anyway? If the design is good and it works, why do we need something new? I mean, you wouldn't enter the Sistine Chapel and go "uhhh. That ceiling is a bit old by now, they should change the design". If the hardware still improves in other respects, and a new design isn't necessary to facilitate new features, why should we care?

I am confused. I was led to believe that Apple would skip the 7s and go straight to iPhone 8. Now you're telling me it's 7s?

Calling it now, this will be the "low end model" priced the same as the current 7/7plus and the phones that actually have new features/design will get a price bump.

Man.....been sooo needing a red phone, thanks Apple!

As these rumors are almost always based on supply chain leaks, my guess is that someone spotted a red 7 casing and just assumed it represented next year's iPhone.

A more likely explanation is that Apple either considered a red model for this year and scrapped it (but the parts are still floating around), or is planning a mid-cycle launch of a limited run "(RED)" iPhone 7/+.

Well, either that or there's a whole lineup of different casing colors using the same process that made JB which have been tested internally and possibly even produced in small batches. The "jet white" we heard about, this red, maybe other iPod colors.

Yep, I think we're done here. You say that there are "facts" that Apple is lagging behind in design and technology then you link to an article about annual profit decline... I did not see the words "design" or "technology" in the entire article. A drop in profit does not automatically equate to a lapse in design and technology.

The only "fact" here is that there *are* no articles that prove, factually, that Apple is any further behind on design and technology than they ever have been or want to be. There are probably under 10 people in this whole world that could speak to whether they're actually "behind" (relative to how they've always operated).

Again, they've never really been on the bleeding edge. They didn't have NFC first. They didn't have big screens first. In fact, the only stuff they're "first" at doing is taking away stuff (a la headphone jack). Yes, other phones will have a full-frontal display before the iPhone does.

Does that really surprise you? Does that bother you? How long have you owned iPhones (legit question)?
lol, you're funny. I do a look up of proof about Apple sales declining and it's ignorantly refused. You want to keep living in denial that Apple is ignoring what need to be done, so be it. I've provided proof, and you've provided nothing that supports your side of the debate. Sales declines can be an indication of multiple things, but it's typically customers no longer interested in buying products for whatever reason (falling behind in design and tech I'm sure is one).

I totally understand that Apple has never been the leading in designs, trust me, I've had Apple devices longer than I'm sure you even knew they existed. Times change and technology continues to speed up, meanwhile Apple still pretends that it's 2014 which is forever in the world we live in now.

I hope Apple continues to try with their lineups but at this point it looks like they only want to milk as much money as possible.

A 5 second google search reveals plenty of results, regarding the topic i'm talking about, this is one of the links: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/oct/25/apple-profits-sales-decline-2016-iphone-7

And if you think Apple's design still looks "new", you havent seen new designs lately.

At some point you'll need to start realizing that if Apple doesn't update their phone designs, they will get left in the dust. As much as I love Apple, it's sad to see them complacent and unwilling to do anything dramatic like they used to. Defending their poor choices just helps they stay far behind competitiors.
Have fun with those rush to market phones, I'll stick with the company that takes its time. I think I'll survive a few months before Apple releases their bezeless phone this fall.

This doesn't seem so crazy.

They release the 7s and 7s plus the same way they've done every other year, with some upgrades and tweaks, and they add another color, maybe.

They release the anniversary edition "pro" model with all the features we keep hearing tossed around. That phone becomes the standard on which they build for the next years' models.

Seems logical.

Apple, listen to me. You need to update the 4" phones, too. Not everyone is enamored with the bigger phones. Sure, they're nice and all that but some of us prefer phones that are smaller. Listen to your customers, Apple. There are more of us out there than you realize. The iPhone SE was a good start now upgrade it, even if you keep the same dimensions.

LMAO.

If this rumor turns out to be true, the forum is going to collectively lose it! Substantially same iPhone design for 4 years in a row will make people infuriated.

Red is not a bad color. I have a red HTC 10 I like a lot even though red is far from my favorite color. It was just fun to get something not black or silver or rose gold or gold for a change. I have a Pokeball themed case for it that I use on occasion and the combo has attracted many positive comments from people who still play Pokemon Go. A lot of women think I simply put my iPhone into a red case (when I use my clear case) and want to know where I got it from, lol!

Women customers may very well take to a red iPhone very well. Women are a strong customer base for Apple. I know very, very few women who don't have an iPhone. I hardly ever see another woman with an Android phone. And Tim seems really focused on the Asian markets right now, so going with red, which is supposedly a popular color there, along with other brighter color choices we rarely see released here, isn't a bad idea. In other words, there's a place for a red iPhone if Apple decides to make one. This could work out really well for Apple.

Of course this is such an early preliminary rumor among many crazy ones floating around out there. It's fun to discuss but definitely not worth raging about so early in the game and so early in the day.
