...Did they intentionally write this article in a way that would tick off MR readers? :p

100% unsubstantiated. I would say it's odd that MacRumors would post it, considering this site at least appears to try to keep its credibility, but their name is MacRumors. But at least post credible rumors. This will undoubtedly NOT be happening. This is just random speculation with nothing to back it.

This seems to the most accurate to me. Many people think it's going to be the iPhone 8, but Apple always does an S model the year after a new model release. Tim and company do NOT push innovation these days. They'll simply stay on course. No fanfare for the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Well, OK....maybe they'll remove some other important port or button.
The power/sleep button is next... Lightning port will be gone too, eventually... All while keeping the same iPhone 6 design and raising the prices..

The iPhone 5 was vaguely similar but still a overall redesign of the iPhone. The 4S-->5 was a way bigger redesign than the 6S-->7 was.
The 4s to 5 change was purely size driven. Because the phone got larger, Apple added to the back the top and bottom panels.

I would just like to ask everyone a relatively serious question – Why do you want a new design anyway? If the design is good and it works, why do we need something new? I mean, you wouldn't enter the Sistine Chapel and go "uhhh. That ceiling is a bit old by now, they should change the design". If the hardware still improves in other respects, and a new design isn't necessary to facilitate new features, why should we care?

Perhaps because many people believe a shiny new gadget will make them more interesting or desirable? It shows they can afford the new thing, and have style? I don't know ... perhaps?

If they simply release an updated 7 next year, I will personally protest outside Infinite Loop for Cook's immediate removal.
The work crew renovating the Infinite Loop facilities will look at you quizzically. Tim Cook and most everyone else will be at the new campus.

I take all rumors with a grain of salt, but if this one is true-ish, there could be a silver lining. It could be that Apple plans to release the 7S as the budget version, rather than continue to sell the 7 and 7 plus at discounted prices. So those who would otherwise get last year's phone will get some upgraded internals.

Those waiting for the new flagship phone can opt for the all-glass, borderless, OLED, wireless charging, and whatever new features Apple has in store.

With two-year contracts becoming a thing of the past, there's no reason to think Apple will continue with the S cycle pattern that they have done since the dawn of time (FOUR times!).

If they stood the course then the iPhone 7 would have looked different. That means we would have had the same design for 4 generations ... means Apple has a big problem.

It would almost certainly be the final nail for Cook. He NEEDS to go. The guy is a moron.

Agreed. Imagine if the CEO of a major car company said "Well we didn't update the line but you CAN now get it in red!"

I can't wait. An iPhone 7S/7S Plus which is really just the 6SSS/6SSS Plus and a new "iPhone X" which will be even more expensive than the Plus series and will be back ordered to hell because they'll make 6 of the damn things ready for launch day while they'll make too many of the 7S/7S Plus

All that being said, I'm going to wait until more "evidence" of this appears as it seems really early in the rumor mill cycle so far.

I think Apples biggest problem is the type of hyper-critical customers it attracts.

lol, you're funny. I do a look up of proof about Apple sales declining and it's ignorantly refused. You want to keep living in denial that Apple is ignoring what need to be done, so be it. I've provided proof, and you've provided nothing that supports your side of the debate. Sales declines can be an indication of multiple things, but it's typically customers no longer interested in buying products for whatever reason (falling behind in design and tech I'm sure is one).

I totally understand that Apple has never been the leading in designs, trust me, I've had Apple devices longer than I'm sure you even knew they existed. Times change and technology continues to speed up, meanwhile Apple still pretends that it's 2014 which is forever in the world we live in now.

I hope Apple continues to try with their lineups but at this point it looks like they only want to milk as much money as possible.

You know: the smartphone as device and concept has plateaued - it's quite probably that Apple is not very interested in iPhones, iPads and computers. None of these are growing markets, none of these are the future.
Apple would be fools if they were not spending far more time on more futuristic work (e.g. cars, space, health/security, etc).
I expect Apple release devices to keep business ticking over, but it's hardly their main focus anymore. Just my thoughts. Have a nice day.

If this happens then Apple is dead to me.

You mean if Apple creates new phones that have the same body style AND a completely redesigned phone, its dead to you? or did you just not even read the article like a ton of others on here? Here, let me assist you here:

"Multiple rumors suggest Apple plans to release three new iPhone models next year, including updated 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models with traditional LCD displays and a larger premium model with an OLED display and glass casing, but reports have been conflicting about which features will be included on each model.

If this report is accurate, it could signify Apple's plans to release a completely overhauled glass-backed iPhone with a curved, bezel-free OLED display and wireless charging at the high end of its 2017 smartphone lineup, while making only incremental upgrades to its traditional 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones with LCD displays."

I had a feeling this was going to happen when the word got out that the new OLED screens weren't going to be ready for 2017.

I will probably get this new 7S anyway since I get the newest iPhone every year but I was hoping for an all new design iPhone 8 with the new display and wireless charge and what not.

Bummer.

Glad everyone is taking the time to point out these stories are rumors... Please remember that just about any article you read between now and release date is a rumor. Rumors are fun to speculate over right?

My guess is the next release whatever it is will not be an "oh ya one more thing" moment that's for sure. I am feeling ambivalent towards Apple products these days. There are so many other good choices in products it really makes it hard to stay loyal to one brand. I have lived in an Apple eco-system since 2001, but I find myself slowly replacing outdated under performing Apple products, with other brands. My router and Apple TV for example. Hate to say it, but there are flat out better choices out there.

The iPhone is still a great product. But the excitement that comes with speculation is not what it used to be. At last not for me. You are not going to see me standing in line like I used to.

Think about it. The next big release, keynote, and publicity campaign for an upgraded chip, and a few other tweaks?

so you're saying that all the color variants of the iPod and iMac that Apple released during Job's tenure didn't actually happen???

actually not at all. Colors don't bother me, too many products do and trying to live out a past success with old products bothers me.

You'd be done with Apple because your newest phone won't differentiate you from the others who can't afford or won't buy the newer phone...? Ok.

What a bizarre reply... The thought of being differentiated from others had never crossed my mind. But it is interesting that such thoughts clearly cross yours so readily. No, I was thinking of useful features that I would appreciate, such as wireless charging and a larger screen size on a device the same size. Childishly, perhaps, I had half hoped for a special "x factor" mystery that Apple might surprise us with on its tenth iPhone anniversary (and given the article is just a rumour, that could still happen). Anyway, differentiation from other people is not something I care much about, or think much about.
