Bookmarking so I can come back to this. Apple repeatedly breaks cycles and numbering systems, look at any of their product lines.

Well they already broke this one, since in reality the change was

iPhone>[Skipped iPhone 2]->[Skipped iPhone 2S]->3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S ->[iPhoneSE]-> 7 -> 8???

Don't care what it call, but I am happy and truly hope the 5.8" one is the most premium one, great if new design, also ok if old design by edge to edge display in current plus body.

3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S -> 7 -> 8???

Come on people, there's no reason to believe Apple will break the cycle. We're getting a 7S this year, and the 8 is coming next year.

Maybe we're getting 7s and iPhone pro :)

Anyone else living out this tension? - I hate being a slave to tech (returning to a simple flip phone has more appeal all the time); I like the access tech gives me...

I can't wait for it guys!

I mean, I'm still enjoying my iPhone 7 Pro from last year with the Smart Connector and Dual Camera. We should totally trust does rumors even when we get pics. I mean, last year we got pics with 3 iPhone models as well in late August: a normal 7, 7 Plus and 7 Pro and those turned out to be true didn't they?

All the big rumor sites said that we would get 3 iPhone models: a normal 7 and 7 Plus with basically the same features with a new "deep blue" color option and a super high end iPhone 7 Pro which sports the dual camera setup and a smart connector and would cost significantly more! Oh and don't forget that they said that the Pro model would get a black glass design, which totally did not turn out to be a glossy brushed aluminium design...
Yes, but that is always the case with apple rumors. The rumors and the leaks are always about products that are more than a year away. So there were rumors of a smart connector on the back of the iphone 7(plus), they were not included in the 7(plus), but my guess is that these were mockups, leaks and rumors about the 7s(+), same as the jet white, will also be 7s(+).
The 5.8 oled will also be released in 2017, and my guess is that the 5.1 inch rumors are too early and will be for the 2018 iphone.

So this year:
-iphone 7s (+) with internal upgrades, same design, alu, new color(jet white? Red?perhaps even last year rumored blue)
-iphone 7s pro/iphone 8/iphone x, with 5.8 inch oled , glass back, stainless steel frame, etc.

Next year:
-Iphone 8 and 8 plus, with glass back, stainless steal, 5.0/5.1 and 5.5/5.8 inch oled. With almost identical design to the iphone x/7 pro from last year, but cheaper
-iphone 8 pro , ultra high end. True wireless/long range charging, and a few mire extra' s.

From now on, they will release 3 iphones each year.:
-2 " regular" in the high end segment , with the regular high end prices, in the regular and plus size. With tech and design based upon the pro/ultra high end of last year.
-1 iphone pro with all the new tech , materials that are available for the ultra high end for a premium, that will be the foundation of the regular/cheaper new iphones of next year.

This will give apple the chance to adopt the latest tech in smaller quantities, and then have a year to optimize production, iron out all the quirks, improve margins before ramping up production for next years regular model.

Ugh. Now I'm stuck in the grey area where I don't want an Android but couldn't care less about these new iPhones. Guess I'm going to have to break down and try this "being happy with what I have" thing for a while.

You poor thing :(

I definitely prefer Scenario A. Create an amazing new ultra premium iPhone with a stunning new design, incredible new technologies, and just make it as great as you can and charge whatever you need to make it profitable. I'd pay $2,000 for a truly ultra premium iPhone.
It's weird because it's not like OLED or wireless charging is new... I feel Apple not having released a newly designed phone in 4 years will have everyone scrambling to spend major money just to have it. Really though, if rumors are true and if it retails at $1k or more, there better be some nice perks in this design, materials, and tech to justify the cost.

2 weeks ago I would have absolutely gone with Scenario A. If the recent numbers regarding Apple's OLED Pre-Orders is close than Scenario B is very possible, and would be the better choice IMO. Frees up Apple to spend all it time to focus on a new line. End the 6s, replace it with the 7 with no changes at the entry point. I'm the most curious about the SE. The 4" demand is not weening. I'm actually looking forward to watching this play out. It's been a long time since I've felt that. :apple:

Apple is sure getting their moneys worth out of the iPhone 6 design.
This will be the fourth year with it.
The iPhone 8 or X or whatever looks interesting, though (but surely a lot of $$$).

Apple is greedy, therefore, 7s, 7s Plus still at $130+ rather than $100+ like before, and of course, the mythical anniversary edition at a crazy price.

If Apple is greedy, they would probably respond: You are a cheapskate and that with no knowledge about their cost of goods, R&D percentages you want all the new and future advances to be included for free.

Until the final model comes out we will not know pricing, and if it's going to be over $ 1,000 and you don't like that it's time for you to no longer support this uncreative, non innovating, money grabbing, non tax paying abomination of a company. There, did I include all the dumb statements people keep making?

The iPhone was a fantastic product when it came along and it is better than it ever was. Designs and available colors and sizes are personal preference and should therefore not be criticized.

Even if Apple gave out free iPhones to the world they would be criticized.

I am far from an Apple evangelist, but :

Objectivity is a central philosophical concept, related to reality and truth, which has been variously defined by sources. Generally, objectivity means the state or quality of being true even outside of a subject's individual biases, interpretations, feelings, and imaginings.

Kind of but the iPhone 3G is exactly the same as the original iPhone except for the casing and the 3G capability. That's the only reason why it's 3G. I'd say the naming began starting with the 3G.

Why is "fragmentation" the new hot word on this site. Its called giving consumer choices, which as far as I'm concerned, is a good thing.
No, the "fragmentation" discussion was way more common in year's past when the iPad, iPhones 5, and iPhone 6 got leaked. We're only assuming that there could be a new screen dimension size again this year based on rumors of the home button going away and a significant reduction to the massive top and bottom bezels.

3G also added GPS and a slightly better battery.

SCENARIO C for me.

Wait and buy in 2019 when the kinks are ironed out.

No, Apple is offering an iPhone you can either buy or not.
Nobody forces anybody here.

Same as it always was.

No. Not the same as it always was. It was a previously well established cycle that Apple would routinely update their iPhones every year. And radically redesign their iPhones every other year. The non "s" versions were the radically redesigned models and the "s" versions were the models with the incremental internal changes. But year to year no matter the updates, the cost structure remained consistent.

But now Apple appears to be abandoning that routine, and basically "forcing" one to pay up to get the radically "redesigned" model. Of course Apple isn't literally forcing anyone to pay more to update, but in a sense they are in that you'll have to pay more if you want the new radically redesigned model. They kinda already did this with the iPad line by introducing the iPad "Pro". One could argue that normally the ability to use the Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard would be features you'd expect to see in a regular iPad update and shouldn't warrant a "pro" label let alone a higher cost.

Look. Apple can do what they want. I love Apple, and have been using Apple products long before the iPod or iPhone even existed. But I think it's okay to point out this apparent change in Apple's iphone pay structure. Especially since Apple users were already paying a premium for their iPhones & iPads. I just think it's a bit greedy on their part.

I'm all for choice -- don't get me wrong. But even having adopted the 7+ as my latest -- I can say with certainty that if the "plus" model had never come to fruition, I would have been completely satisfied with another standard iPhone 6-sized phone ( I would have never even known the difference!). My life would have carried on and I would have liked the new device the same as I've liked all of the others.

Never have known the difference? Are you living in a box where someone hand delivers iPhones and nothing else to you? iPhones with no data plans on top of that? How is it you aren't aware of other phones with larger screens?

On a more serious note, I have a friend who would love to work for Apple. If they forward you their resume, can you hook them up?

It doesn't make any sense to release a iPhone 7s and an iPhone 8 at the same time. The latest iPhone series is always seen as the most premium models you can buy. If you give the consumer the impression that a brand new 7s is already a generation behind the new (and vastly more expensive) 8, then that's damaging the brand.

I honestly expect to see an all-new iPhone, in two sizes, maybe even three (4.7 & 5.5 and perhaps a 5.8 no bezel OLED higher-end option). Or just two very premium OLED 4.7 & 5.5 options.
How about the standard iPhone 7S that we have one to expect, plus the new iPhone Pro premium addition. To be similar to the iPad lineup.

iPhone 7s/7s+ and iPhone Pro!
Right on.

That is definitely true, although I am still highly intelligent.

"The more you know, the more you know you don't know."

-Aristotle

You may possibly be the one exception, but I've NEVER heard anyone (or even heard OF anyone) that's "highly intelligent" refer to themselves to strangers in such a grandiose manner.
I believe that with great intellect comes at least moderate humility.
Now, it may be that I had garnered a deep & lasting respect for your insightful posts and shrewd commentary, but- even if that were true, the pompous self-aggrandizement dashed that all.

In what way?

The whole Apple ecosphere is the consistency between devices and apps. The only thing Android OS offers that I know of is the ability to customize one's interface and the "open" architecture for programmers.

Is this what you want? If so it just won't happen. People from 6 - 60 can all easily operate the Apple iOS and that can't change.

Now adding features like touch, face recognition id, improve Siri, and the screen are good!
I wouldn't mind the ability to remove the "dock" at the bottom of the iOS interface. To me at least, it seems very outdated today. We should at least have the ability to add apps to this space or remove it entirely.
