Why is "fragmentation" the new hot word on this site. Its called giving consumer choices, which as far as I'm concerned, is a good thing.

I dont want to choose anything. It is not like Im going to marry the phone or spend my life with it...its just a phone. Thats why I pay Apple, so they can make the best phone and sell it to me. Not to give me the choices. They must make the choice, not me. Apple should make the compromise, not me.

It's pretty absurd that Apple sells so many different models concurrently. I get it, Cook can manage the supply chain to deliver the variety of products. This truly reminds me of Apple in the 90s when they had so many different models of products they sold.

Thats what other "tech" companies do. Apple shouldn't do the same. Professional and Consumer variations... that's it.... and they need to quit selling last years product alongside whats new. IMHO

Is it really too much to ask, for a smaller reasonably sized phone?!

There adding choice by offering different models, if they only offered the 5.5" people would complain, if they only offered the 4.7" people would complain. I think they are in a no win situation as far as people complaining goes, personally I don't mind it gives me the option to choose from, I picked the 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus the other year, in September last year I picked the 5.5" iPhone 7 Jet black (mainly because of the dual camera) and this year I will pick which ever one appeals to me, but so far I'm liking the sound of the 8 with OLED screen.

I think Apple finally realized that no matter how hard they try, they just can't suppress the leaks and rumors, so they're going for the "information dump" method by putting all kinds of signals out so that no one really knows for sure.

Apple appear to have done nothing new (ahead of the game or truly innovative) since the passing of Steve Jobs. Apart from some box engineering (including a butt ugly box watch), create a mountain of connectors and increase the price of everything to just above stupid level. Have they produced anything significant since the great man's passing? and if not - how do they justify their income? - oh yes - just keep putting the prices up.

I think they will have scenario B because i believe this is Apple's third attempt at clearly differentiating the top end phones with their rest of the offerings. Plus worked to some extent but not by much. The SE also had limited success. So the only way is "Up the cost for a super-premium device". This will also help them to rake in more cash and differentiate from other manufacturers.

Can I point out that there is 18 Wallet notifications in the render? Who the heck has a Wallet that talks to them that much?

My post was referring to the fact that they have the iPhone 7, iPhone 6S and iPhone SE on sale at the same time. Variations of screen size, storage, speed, .... is fine. (Remember the 'good', 'better', 'best'... nomenclature they used to use?)

So basically no one truly knows for sure. I will start believing the rumors when the parts start to leak.

SCENARIO C for me.

Wait and buy in 2019 when the kinks are ironed out.

So, according to this rumor, Apple is basically going to force people to pay UP for the radical redesign that should have been done for the iPhone 7 last year. Hmmm.

No, Apple is offering an iPhone you can either buy or not.
Nobody forces anybody here.

Same as it always was.

3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S -> 7 -> 8???

Come on people, there's no reason to believe Apple will break the cycle. We're getting a 7S this year, and the 8 is coming next year.

Just because they did something four times doesn't mean they'll do it forever. They'll break the pattern at some point. Why not this year? It's the tenth anniversary after all and Apple loves milestones.

Fair enough, I do think they should, drop the 6s which they probably will when the new 8 comes out in September.

This will be a very interesting year! With competition from China getting better and better, Apple will have to come out with something more unique that the competition doesn't have.

One thing is for sure, they'll make everything to create the desire in people to go for the more expensive model. This makes sense in having a "7S" with metal design as the 7 and an iPhone8 with glass/metal build, more expensive. Of course people will want, desire the iPhone8 because it's really the new iPhone.

People are eager for a new design and Tim knows that ;) they will find a way to make people pay more for that new design ;)

I think the most likely is:

iPhone 7s - 4.7" dual camera w portrait mode

iPhone 8/X - 5.5" all the new bells and whistles

iPhone 8 Plus/X Plus - 5.8" same as 5.5". Apple likely might do something to differentiate the 5.5 v 5.8 models. But I think the 4.7 becomes the legacy model.

It's very clear most people here do not understand what fragmentation really is (in the tech world context) and who it adversely impacts.

To the unknowledgeable, it's just a word that's tossed out in an attempt to take a swipe at Apple.

3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S -> 7 -> 8

Your example contradicts your conclusion.

Not really, because the phone was called the 3G. Ever since the 3G and 3GS, Apple has taken the previous year's model and added "S" to the name, then incremented the number the following year.

It's likely going to be two new phones in two different sizes. Whether it will be called the 8 or 7s is the question. Can't see them offering a single premium version called the 8 while the other two are called the 7s/7s+. Just seems like brand suicide.

Too much work having three different models, I hope this does not affect quality / durability. I'm very curious about anyway.

I think we see something more like

iPhone 7s/7s+ with updated design, OLED screen, wireless charging other internal upgrades
iPhone Pro with 5"+ bezel less OLED screen in the same body size as the current 4.7 iPhone with built in TouchID, plus all the upgrades on the 7+.

My guess is the 7s Plus is a goner. Replaced with the new one

We are already seeing people willing to go upscale for better features and better design. Better margins that's for sure.

I see I nice upgrade for the 4.7 7s, making it the mainstream phone, and the new one as the premium upscale model.

Great! Make a totally refined 7s. Be nice if the 4.7" 7s could have 3GB RAM and the dual cameras.

I definitely prefer Scenario A. Create an amazing new ultra premium iPhone with a stunning new design, incredible new technologies, and just make it as great as you can and charge whatever you need to make it profitable. I'd pay $2,000 for a truly ultra premium iPhone.
And that my friend is why come the end of year awards you will sweep the board!!
Apple fan of the year 2017, no contest.

Can't be long till you get a lifetime achievement award. And you know what, you bloody well deserve it!

...of less choice.

Now we have small, medium and large iPhones and iPads. These are the days.

Somehow, I'm not seeing how the "more choice" has drastically and positively impacted my life (or heck, even just my user experience with my iPhone). And I'm even one of those who moved up to the 7+ (4s, 5, 6, 7+). While I like it, I also really liked my iPhone 5 -- probably on the same level (if not slightly more).

In other words, "more" [decisions] doesn't always equate to "better" [purchasing or user experience].
