So, according to this rumor, Apple is basically going to force people to pay UP for the radical redesign that should have been done for the iPhone 7 last year. Hmmm.
Bingo. Apple marketing at its finest.
[doublepost=1487095742][/doublepost]
SCENARIO C for me.

No, Apple is offering an iPhone you can either buy or not.
Nobody forces anybody here..
Anyone can put lipstick on a pig. So as long as the design, materials, and tech can support any dramatic increase in cost over the "standard" models you are correct.

(And the iPhone is not a pig by any stretch, but you get the point.)

Why is "fragmentation" the new hot word on this site. Its called giving consumer choices, which as far as I'm concerned, is a good thing.
If that was the case we would have 17" rMBP which a lot of people here asked about.

It's intriguing that everyone forgot what Apple did with the Apple Watch: against all odds, they put the new S2 dual core processor on BOTH the Series 1 and Series 2, but kept the physical advantages of new hardware (e.g.: waterproofing, better display, etc.) to the more expensive model.
That's a perfect precedent for what they might do with the iPhone 7s and iPhone 8:
- Release both at the same time
- No underpowered phones, both will include A11 (though maybe the more expensive one may have higher clock speeds as per iPad mini / iPad Air clock tweaking)
- Form factor, OLED display and redesigned fingerprint reader (if any!) are reserved to the more expensive model.
Seems clear as day to me. Oh, the Jet Black variation that was tied to higher capacities also signal this shift in their pricing strategy.
Get over it, my iPhone 7 Plus was already borderline 1000 dollars, and I'm totally fine about it.

It s a mess, but its a more exciting year than last year! Also seems like there'll be a lot less disappointment.

You know what would be awesome? Apple giving the iPhone X for free to users that owned each and every iPhone in the past.

So everyone is right. Clearly Apple is making the iPhone 8 this year. That's fact. But looks like they might be keeping the 7 but modified as the 7s.

Hmm 5.8", oh well screw the people who like the smaller handset... again.. if the rumours are true.
I bet we only get a 7S with incremental updates and some ridiculously priced monster size of a phone. Even the rumoured standard S8 is said to be a big 5.8" device with some sort of Plus model being over 6"!!!

As for everyone suddenly praising OLED, that's pathetic really, even more so to use it as some sort of apologising excuse for price gouging... not like phones have had OLED for several years now or anything...

I would just stick with the 7 or 7S personally. You can't make a 5.8" device even with no bezels as small as the 4.7" iPhone.

3G -> 3GS -> 4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S -> 7 -> 8???

Come on people, there's no reason to believe Apple will break the cycle. We're getting a 7S this year, and the 8 is coming next year.
Seems clear
7s
And an anniversary iPhone for one year.
Next year, the 8 will have what the Anniversary iPhone has as far as design goes with updated chipset.

If that happens, expect fewer 7S units to be sold than the 6S. At least with the 6S, it was only a one-year-old design, not a three-year-old design as is the case with the 7S. I know I'll hold on to my 6S for another year because there's no way I'll pay $900+ for a three-year-old design just for the A11 and maybe wireless charging. I think it would be a perfect opportunity for "Upsell" Tim to offer something that actually looks new at a nice profit. By the way, are you a iPhone 7/7 Plus owner?

iPad --> iPad 2 --> iPad --> iPad --> iPad Air --> iPad Air 2 --> iPad Pro

Yeah, since Apple's never broken cycle before.

Now that I'm done playing Devil's advocate, I think it makes perfect sense to call the next iPhone just, "iPhone." It will fall in line with their entire computer naming scheme, as well as the current iPad naming scheme, which is "Name (year)." Apple seems to be going for streamlining the name of its product lines, with an example being renaming "OS X" to "macOS" so that it falls in line with iOS and watchOS.
I see Apple releasing the "new iPhone" this year, with it technically being titled "iPhone/iPhone Plus (2017)." I could also see Apple debuting "iPadOS" at WWDC this year to give the iPad a much-needed refresh, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Never have known the difference? Are you living in a box where someone hand delivers iPhones and nothing else to you? iPhones with no data plans on top of that? How is it you aren't aware of other phones with larger screens?

On a more serious note, I have a friend who would love to work for Apple. If they forward you their resume, can you hook them up?

I'm saying if Apple had not come out with the larger phone, I would not have gone back to a Samsung phone (bad experience) and therefore, I would not have known the difference. Yes, I would have been aware that they existed but would have had no firsthand knowledge of or experience with a larger phone.

I know it's asking a higher level of comprehension and intellect to be able to read something and not take it literally at 100% face value, but c'mon.... please do try.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by your friend needing a job. I'm not at your level of smartassedness so it legitimately does not make sense to me. I guess you're implying that I work for Apple? I don't really know.

7 $549
7s $649
7s+ $769
8 $1000+?

32GB/128GB/256GB

7 discontinued
7s $549/$649/$749
7s+ $649/$749/$849
8/X $849/$949/$1,049

Since the 7s is a three-old-design, I think it would be fair to reduce the price by at least $100.

What I imagine is going to happen is something like this:

Tim Cook:

And as per the usual tradition, we've done something unbelievable. We've created the iPhone 7s! Here's Jimmy* to explain more about it.

Jimmy:

Talks about iPhone 7s. iPhone SE's upgrade.

*crowd goes somewhat ecstatic*

Back to you Tim!

Tim:

Here at Apple, we like to do things out of convention. We like to redesign things and give it an exquisite taste, the touch of Apple. And on Apple's 10th birthday, we're going to do that once more, except to the product line. We just introduced the iPhone 8, it's revolutionary. Starts at $1500, but you can wait until next year if you want it at the regular iPhone prices.

*Crowd-gasm*

Top of the line 7+ is $969. So you're all saying the bottom of the line "8" will cost around the same I guess? I still don't think they will skip to 8; I think 7S and maybe a 10th Anniversary Edition but why? Whatever happens and regardless of price the top of the line phone will be the phone with a 3 month wait... I mean even if they released a 'jet blue' option that would sell out.

Remember the 20th Anniversary Mac that cost $10k....

The fact that Apple's stock price is now the highest it's ever been, there's zero reason for them to release a 7s and 8 simultaneously. Just keep trickling out the mediocre hits...

No. Not the same as it always was. It was a previously well established cycle that Apple would routinely update their iPhones every year. And radically redesign their iPhones every other year. The non "s" versions were the radically redesigned models and the "s" versions were the models with the incremental internal changes. But year to year no matter the updates, the cost structure remained consistent.

But now Apple appears to be abandoning that routine, and basically "forcing" one to pay up to get the radically "redesigned" model. Of course Apple isn't literally forcing anyone to pay more to update, but in a sense they are in that you'll have to pay more if you want the new radically redesigned model. They kinda already did this with the iPad line by introducing the iPad "Pro". One could argue that normally the ability to use the Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard would be features you'd expect to see in a regular iPad update and shouldn't warrant a "pro" label let alone a higher cost.

Look. Apple can do what they want. I love Apple, and have been using Apple products long before the iPod or iPhone even existed. But I think it's okay to point out this apparent change in Apple's iphone pay structure. Especially since Apple users were already paying a premium for their iPhones & iPads. I just think it's a bit greedy on their part.

Sorry, we disagree and you are using an entitlement viewpoint in that Apple owes us new designs and improvements at always the same price, no matter what they do with the next generation of iPhones and what they have done in the past.

We do not know if the OLED displays cost more, we do not know whether there will be new camera component which will cost more. It seems there is another battery strip in it and we do not know if the assembly yields are different and assembly the costs more. There maybe other components which now cost more.

That's only mentioning a few possible price accelerators.

Now, since everybody is crying that the " assembly slaves" should be paid fair wages, Apple may have agreed to that and as we all know things get more expensive over time.

There is way to much info missing to call them greedy or forcing anybody.

Forcing is clearly the wrong word, when there are so many alternatives out there.

People need to start separating emotions and mostly WANT vs. NEED and their lives would be much easier.

As QUEEN used to sing: We want it all, we want it all and we want it now.

They just didn't finish the lyrics saying: For FREE or same low price forever

There's a perfectly good reason - they already have. Releasing the 6++, AKA the 7, was breaking the cycle.

I hope this isn't true anyway. It's annoying enough getting inferior hardware just because I don't want the larger model, now the new features get shunted off to an iPhone Pro!

While this is probably true, it would be nice to see a redesign we expected with the 7.
