I'm impressed, but for me, there is no reason to upgrade from my perfectly functioning 6s Plus. I wasn't planning on upgrading anyway, but seeing the 8 doesn't compel me in any way to upgrade. I know that everything about the 8 is probably better than my 6s Plus, but I have no issues with the performance, camera, screen, battery life, or design so I really don't have a reason to fork over $800 for an 8 Plus.

Really good phones though, and I would definitely upgrade if my 6s Plus wasn't still going strong.
You wouldn't have to, just trade in your phone like I did my 6.
My payment for the 256 8+ is 17.50 a month...well worth it.

If you have a iPhone 5 or maybe a 6, then the 8 is probably worth the upgrade.

Don't see the point in upgrading from a 7 or even a 6S.

Apple should have called the 8, the 7S.

Face ID? Smaller form factor? OIS on both back cameras?

You're right though, a lot fewer people would pay the extra $200 to go to the iPhone X, and the release date of the 8 could be delayed in the same way as well.

But the X is also a big compromise, especially when I saw how it handles landscape mode - less usable space than even my 6s+. At this point it is basically an early adopter sneak-peak product, and serious buyers who want no compromises and a large screen size have to wait another year.
If the 8 got everything the X has minus the OLED screen what would be the point of the X?

Does the phone actually take advantage of the extra CPU performance? If not, thats whats the point?

Wow, even the lowly iPhone 8 blows about the Samsung G8+ in CPU performance. :D

I think this is where it comes to down to the person, I can count the number of times I have used my plus in landscape on one hand (excluding games). So for me the extra vertical space is more important. Additionally, the addition of OIS on the telephoto and the extra f-stop will be a welcome addition. So the argument over landscape orientation for me is irrelevant but for some people who use their phone very differently this may be a game changer. Some people just need to recognize that people use their phones very differently.

What he seems to be saying is there is no MAJOR update to this phone. All updates are minor. Surely, you can agree with that, no? Also, the new phone has a smaller battery. Since battery life is a big, big issues - I would think that's a MAJOR negative.

Keep telling him that. You haven't seen any battery life tests, but that's a "MAJOR negative "???

Even in portrait the keyboard will have the same width as the one in iPhone 7, while the plus can take advantage of the larger screen. Keyboard is something everyone use constantly, I have a 6s now and I'm not happy about the keyboard, I wish it was bigger and that's one advantage of the + size phones.
I think iPhone 8+ has the best aspect ratio and I'm confident they'll make a plus version of X next year or in 2019

Wireless charging would be sufficient to designate an 'S' model in the past - like Siri, TouchID, etc.

So are we all agreed this is not really an '8', but a 6SSS ?

So maybe the 8 is s-s-snake oil?

Glass backing is only there for wireless charging. What good is the A11 processor if Apple doesn't give us anything to take advantage of in terms of improving multi-tasking? A newer camera was expected and isn't worth upgrading to. "True tone display" and whatever is called doesn't change the 750p or 1080p resolutions nor are OLED based. Stereo speakers improving is expected since it's a 2nd gen of them. Isn't ARKit available on the 7 and 7+? Not such a good upgrade from the 7/7+.

So what makes a phone worthwhile upgrading to then? Smartphones are kind of peaking in terms of their abilities more or less, so what killer feature is worthwhile shelling out big bucks to upgrade? Almost every new phone new has "a better camera speck" or a "better screen" but nothing revolutionary when you really think about it... If you're in the market to get a new phone, to spend a few hundred more on a non-so-great OLED display (compared to other OLED displays on the market) on the iPhone X to me doesn't make sense....

The main difference between the previous iPhones [7 and 7 Plus] and iPhone 8 is it just support wireless Charing. Otherwise nothing major upgrade over iPhone 7 Plus. All minor spec bumps come at a higher price tag since Apple rised the price by $50.

Only if you consider new features to be the only difference... but literally every component was upgraded from the screen to the cameras. I don't think it's fair to say there are no major upgrades outside of wireless charging.

I think what Sunny is trying to say is that yes components have been upgraded but to speeds that aren't going to make a huge impact to running the current version of ios or any third party apps running much faster than the components in the iphone 7. Obviously the iphone 8 is more future proof than the iphone 7 so unless you are someone that keeps their iphone 3-4 years and owns at least a 6S or lower you are probably just as well off keeping your iphone 7 and probably even iphone 6S one more year which I think makes sense. If you are going to upgrade from a 6S or 7 you should probably pony up for the iphone X. As someone upgrading from a cough cough 5S I have a trickier decision. Get a good deal on a 7? iPhone 8? (probably not) iPhone X? probably I mean that screen, even with its weird notches.

Glass back could also stop it being as slippery as a bar of soap which could be reason enough for some to upgrade

"Powerful devices with great cameras"
same can be said about 7 and 7 Plus..very generic.
bring on the X.
Until then.:)

I'm wondering why Apple didn't rotate the dual camera lens 90 degrees on the 8 Plus, like it will be on the X (the dual lens orientation now matches the device orientation). AFAIK, rotating helps better facilitate AVR, yet isn't AVR enabled on all the A11 Bionic model iPhones?

Still has a protruding camera, so I'd use a cover anyway, but I prefer glass over aluminium

Any chance the X keyboard has a row of number keys? I really wish the Iphone had a row of number keys.. iOS 11 swipe keys are pretty good though

If Apple put an OLED screen in the 8 there would be no point to the X. iMO the 8 exists because Apple can’t produce enough X at the price/volume they would need. The 8 from a form factor standpoint isn’t the future of anything. And I don’t think Apple is positioning it as such.

The Yields in the iPhone X display are apparently so low due to the Notch. without the notch, with a standard shape AMOLED panel, the yields would be far higher and would be more likely to meet demand. I believe I read a rumour earlier on here that said Samsung is only getting around a 60% yield on the iPhoneX, which is significantly lower than the estimate 80%+ for Samsung's normal AMOLED panels.

8+ has a dual camera, but is wider than iPhone 8 with a single camera.
It may also be possibile that they could face problems putting the dual camera horizontally since there is less space there. We'll find out more after the first teardown.
It is also possible they're planning to release something AR related in the future and they started to design the X model with a vertical camera.

Uhm that would be nice, I'll have a look at the simulator and see how the keyboard looks like.

You mean because the display is rounded instead of right angles?
