Looking like and having to sales figures to back-up that it isn't are two different things.

So apple shouldn't design a phone that caters to all age groups and not make the iphone fun and playful? I find nothing wrong with the concepts being presented in these leaks.

Yes if they are going to price it so its a viable option for a child. Who buys a child $1000 phone?

Ohh-kayyy....

Hopefully, there are also features for the less "emoji-nal" of us.

As for 16y olds with 1k iPhones - a lot of parents (esp. if both of them have full-time jobs), carry a lot of guilt with them about this. That's how 16y old end up with 1k iPhones...

Or maybe $1000 if you keep the phone 3 years isn't that big a gift or even an expense.

In the 1980s to 1990s, tech things given to children were arguably much more expensive than now.
Apple computers would have been insanely more expensive than now.

I got a C64 + drive + monitor from my parents in 1983 and that was $1350 then with tax, the equivalent of $4000 now.
Parents have given expensive gifts to their children for some time.

An equivalent Apple computer would probably be $6000 in todays money.
People forget how expensive computers were back then.

Families (2 adult workers) that make $100-500K a year? Which I'm guessing buy Apple product in very substantial quantities. Apple products last many years, so the actual cost per year is not that big an expense.

The phone plan is arguably the biggest expense in having a phone these days anyway.

So basically another Snapchat filter... Well worth 1000€!

Real time. So, no. But nice for playing the sarcastic wheel spin.

In this thread we are educated on how mature and cultured and above this everyone here is.

But seriously, this is going to amaze a whole lot of people. People with joy in their souls, of course.

Hmmm. Is its use completely restricted to the iPhone 8?
How will you share your smug superiority to lesser phones if they can't display your awesomeness?

Oh don't worry Apple will facilitate that rubbing of the noses. It's an up-sell.

I'm in the minority here but can't the technology used in creating this open up many more new and interesting applications? It seems that when Apple does something minor its the set up for a much larger function later on.

Difference between a C64 or any older computer then and an iPhone now is that the computers of yore were seen as an investments in ones education and by extension, ones self growth. A home computer was also a new tool that had seemingly endless utilities, the only utility in smartphones is isolation.

Come on, seriously, education was about 20% of the actual use (though parents wanted 80% :) and yeah, I had a lot of my friends with C64s.

The utility of smartphones is a lot more than that and you know it.

Like all tools, it can be used in good and bad.

Look at the long... Yes, a gimmick feature, but I can’t think of a better way to showcase your new technology than on something that tons of people use on a daily basis and is the current fad. Seems smart to me, just scratching the surface of something bigger.

I'm not concerned with destruction of language. I'm concerned with how many hours of top-tier engineers and programmers were assigned to this...

Considering face-id is likely linked to that tech (not to mention AR functions and possibly things linked to how the camera functions), you've built a kind of straw man argument.

This cool use is a nice perk instead of the main goal.
Also, the main goal of a company is to differentiate their products enough and in significant enough way that someone will buy it and not another. If this is part of what it takes, they will put as much engineers on it as it takes.

I'm sure it will be a fun little gimmick, but I'm still not getting the urge to buy one.

This is the kind of thing app developers have been doing for ages. It's like a built-in "Talking Tomcat" or something. A little more polished, sure, it's Apple...

Many things have been built that really didn't improve people's lives, at least at the time. People built palaces that benefited only a handful of people yet took time, engineering and money. Their intended purpose was for the comfort and ease of a few but today many of these places are tourists destinations, and support thousands. It just wasn't what the original owners had in mind when they commissioned them.

So maybe they are creating the Emoji Palace of Versailles.

Or on a more disturbing note- maybe this is how they are teaching AI to understand human speech and writing so we can be better manipulated.
