this is a game changer, anifans will shell billion of dollars to buy the new phone just to use the animojis to be able to customize their fav app, iMessage.

Wow, Apple.... this is just another great unthinkable feature. Fack Samsang and Googel, they will never be able to match this sensation.

Heading to the queue now, ready for day one

Me like faces that move. Funny faces. Ha ha. They move. See? Like real faces. Ha ha.

Yet. All of my friends say that my "imaginary iPhone 8" has taken over my life to the extent that I've now become so introspective that I have lost the realisation that there's an actual world out there that is infinitesimally more important than another mobile phone.

That my priorities have slipped and that I now see incremental and ultimately spurious hardware updates as my reason to be on this Earth. A sad existence that is centred around a (hopefully OLED) screen which ultimately has stunted any interpersonal skill development which is clearly desperately needed in order for me to develop actual social behaviour.

Whatever that means, eh readers?

Really?

Well. The jokes on them.

Because all of my friends are imaginary as well!

That's probably millions of dollars wasted on a gimmick feature ... but hey, it sounds cool :D
Its not wasted. What was learned when they created these will be undoubtedly be used somewhere else if it's not already being used there.

The sheer amount of features on the iPhone 8 is making the 7S look more and more like lower end product with every coming leak.

the problem is the 7S won't have a lower end price. the risk apple runs here is they make the high end product so great that people won't buy the low end because it doesn't make them happy, but won't buy the high end either because they just can't afford it.

Big market are teens who love this stuff.....stupid at best

and you know the market for $1000+ phones and teens is huge!

Great to know how the sales figures will be for two unannounced phones.

Apple's not a fool to price it that high. It will sell and judging by the amount of cost Apple has invested in it it will outsell every iPhone beneath it.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about this ****ing Emoji stuff but the security of Face ID?
I do not like finger print scanner nor face iD. I do not like the idea that authorities have the power to order to scan my finger or face to unlock my phone. I also noticed, that people are using telephones way to much. I'm going the other way.

Millions of dollars reading facial expressions would be a sound investment because the applications go far beyond this one. Read Homo Deus for some ideas. Also, it could be useful for more human-like interaction with Siri, or for animating characters more broadly, including game development.

Well you'll be well served by the other 10,000 phones on the market that dont have either then.

Maybe I misunderstand the word "feature", somewhere along the line Apple must have redefined it.

I've made fun of this concept in this thread, but realistically it was probably begun as a proof of concept program. Apple didn't know the problems they would run into trying to incorporate their fingerprint ID button into their OLED screen, but they were planning on introducing Face ID technology into this or the next model phone.

The Emoji face reading app would be a way to test the technology in a way that doesn't really matter if it doesn't work- It's just an emoji face.

They didn't know that there would be problems incorporating their Touch ID into the new phone when this was started.

This is ALL supposition on my part, but it would make sense to test the technology and software on a project that doesn't matter if the success rate is lower than is acceptable.

IF I am right, I hope that they have already tested the face recognition and that it is reliable.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

I don’t understand why everyone is saying these will be annoying. People already send eachother stickers and gifs. How’s is this any different? I think it looks pretty cool.

Doesn’t really bother me the way it seems
To bother some here. This is just something I would likely never see or use just like stickers and al lethargic other nonsense they added to messages.

I agree, cool. Just imagine the camera lens pointing at your butth and creating the animoji out of it.

Glad I've got most of my contacts to switch from Messages to Signal. Though this doesn't seem quite as annoying as the GIF crap they added in iOS 10.

Looks like a fun feature for those who want to use it, and a nice tech demo that shows just a slither of the potential for other applications (in both senses).

Some of the ludicrously over-negative reactions here are hilarious to me. That said, I do think there should be options in settings to not display all the fun stuff in iMessages if that's what you want.

Like others have mentioned, while not a great feature, it really showcases the power of the new sensors and cameras that the iPhone X will have.

Also, nobody will force you to use this if you don't want to, promise.

It seems like every part of this keynote has had its thunder stolen. I know some people suspect leaks are always instigated by Apple - and no doubt some are - but suspect there are some very shocked and disappointed execs there right now. I really enjoy reading the rumours but I can't help feeling that the wealth of information this year will detract from the launch.

All these leaks only spoil the surprise for people reading apple blogs etc., i.e. not most people
