that would be the dream - spotify , alexa, gmail, etc. come on apple. let us own our own experience

One fundamental issue IMHO is that iOS' home is the app "launcher" (the grid of icons) (which technically functions as a switcher as well). Why isn't the home the "app switcher"... the open apps that a user cares about at any given time?

Why do users have to see and filter out information of every app on the home screen every time they want to get to some information they care about from an app they probably already have open? Or have to double tap on the home button to 'switch' for that matter?/end rant

The "home" shouldn't be a list a of installed apps. The analogy would be...instead of the desktop/dock on the Mac, you would just have a full-screen Application folder.

PS>> See WebOS on a PalmPre 2 as a better example...

If the new "virtual" home button remains as large as the current one and is in the same place, then it will be just as difficult for people's thumbs to reach further up the screen in one handed use, and the new phones will functionally be no better than the old.

I'd like to see a design that doesn't take up any screen space for the home button at all, and uses 3D Touch on certain parts of the screen to accomplish the same function.

I certainly don't think we're going to see any type of screen curvage, be it at the edges or the corners, unless it's extremely subtle (like the "curved" glass on the iPhone 6). Otherwise it would be too much of a departure from other recent fundamental design directions (square watch instead of round, skeuomorphism's demise, the flattening of Macs and accessories, etc.), not to mention that it would require large changes to software/graphics APIs. As we see in the case of the watch, and iOS in general, Apple tends to use common sense when it comes to graphical interfaces. Pictures, videos, websites, documents, and pretty much every other type of digital content (minus VR stuff) all have something in common: rectangularity. It simply doesn't work well with rounded corners.

In other words, the mockups look snazzy as always, but they'll be pretty far from the real thing.

I disagree. I'd rather have my homescreen just like it is, with apps in the same place every time, and my most used ones on the front screen. It doesn't save me any time going to my switcher because I usually can't remember exactly how far I have to go back to get the app I want, unless it was the one directly prior (for which we have a shortcut now).

We are going to be so disappointed.. we do this every time - but what actually gets released is nothing like what we want...

The edge to edge idea seems cool. But what happens when you watch videos and movies?? Wouldn't you end up covering part of the video with your hands?? That'd be suuuper annoying.

Removing physical bezels for blank spaces on a screen does what exactly?
Thank you! I thought I was the only one grumbling about this. Virtual space wasters seem just as bad as physical ones. Unless I'm missing something.

I'm hoping for something truly virtual using 3D Touch and smart software.

Presumably that's aesthetics for the home screen. But when you're in an app like Youtube or Safari, it's full screen and immersive until you swipe to bring up the home button again.
Uh, I don't want to have to swipe up and then hit a virtual home button. Two gestures replacing one is not progress.

People have this weird thing for bezel-less screens. I would agree that they'd be great if, and only if, the device can self levitate so that you don't have to hold it and have your fingers cover up parts of the screen. Or maybe that's asking too much, so then instead of a flat back to the device, they (Apple or any other device manufacturer) make the device with some hand-grip case that allows you to hold the device from the back without covering the screen.

Ok, both ideas are bad - to go along with the full edge to edge screen.

Haha, now that you mention it, there are a lot of rumors on this site and no hint as to why that is. This is probably one of the worst video hosting sites I've used—it's just a collection of rumors and a forum! WTF was the thought behind your site, MacRumors?

Um, exactly that? What else would you expect from a rumors site?

EDIT: Sarcasm detector defective, now corrected. Never mind ;)

I'm curious as to where these "designers" think the camera, noise cancelling microphone and the speaker for the phone are supposed to go without any cut-outs, or clear glass in front of them?

These supposed "mock-ups", seem to ignore basic engineering requirements. They either assume Apple can work around these problems, and so don't bother with them, or the problems aren't being thought about at all.

It's why I ignore all of this junk.

My God please put the standby button ANYWHERE except opposite another button. Even stupid Windows Mobile phones figured that out 15 years ago.

My iPhone case has a kickstand on it so you can read or watch movies without holding it.
iPads are the best for that though! :) interesting that people have been complaining about the bezels and now
are wondering what the point of the display going to the edge is if you are holding the iPhone in your hands.
You can't make some people happy!

unlike previous years there have been no leaks. Not even case design leaks! This is surprising and suggests apple will make the 7s and 7s plus design the same as current. There might be this bezeless design in the works but until I see some leaks and multiple sources saying the same thing we can only assume its speculation.

For me, all of these designs from apple and others have a single problem they're not willing to tackle is the INNER bezels. They all continue to have this 1mm line around the edge because they can't get rid of it without reducing screen size and increasing outer bezels. The top and bottom aren't limited by screen tech but the corners being curved and the cameras/sensors that can't go close to the edge without compromises on quality are bigger issues. We've seen other tackle this by locating them all on one end and having an unbalanced design.

It's very possible that apple will avoid an unbalanced design in favour of bezels that remain equal.

We'll know how serious Apple is about iPhone 8 (or Edition) when they talk about iOS in June. If it's that big of an update they may just announce everything at the same time.. I mean, how much stuff can you hide from the OS right?

I wouldn't count on a 5.8 inch phone being the same size as a 4.7 inch phone witout COMPLETELY ZERO bezels. and that would be a usability nightmare.
