Imagine to be a designer that only finds a single new design getting authorized in 4 years - some of which are failing in the marketplace due to crazy constraints.

You are making a huge assumption here based on Ive's work. But companies keep designs around for many reasons -- the biggest cost. It's not cheap to keep retooling factories. Even quasi-luxury car makers keep design around for 7-8 years with small refreshes at the cycle mid-point.

As for Ive's work, I haven't seen anything out of any of Apple's competitors that tells me Ive isn't still at the top of his game; that there isn't someone better. Again, the biggest problem with Apple design of late is that there isn't anyone to tell Ive "no". Also we don't know how much of Apple design is mandated to Ive. The TouchBar, for example.

Apple may call the 2017 iPhone 8, rumored to be announced alongside the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus at a September event, the "iPhone Edition," according to a new report from Japanese website Mac Otakara. The name would reportedly signal that the phone is a higher end model, similar to how Apple names the Apple Watch Edition. The "Edition" moniker lines up with reports that the model could cost upwards of $1,000.

The report goes on to note that Apple is currently testing multiple prototypes alongside the iPhone 8. The prototypes experiment with screen technology and materials, with some prototypes using an LCD display while others use AMOLED. The prototypes are also in testing with and without home buttons. Further, Apple is using them to test glass, aluminum and white ceramic chassis.

Apple is trying to gauge which materials and technologies they can procure at mass scale for production, according to Mac Otakara. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Nikkei and the Wall Street Journal have reported the iPhone 8 will feature an OLED screen, while the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch lower-end models will sport LCD displays.

Mac Okatara says the only features Apple is reportedly certain of are a 5-inch display, wireless charging and dual cameras. The 5-inch display Mac Otakara is referring to is the usable space on the display. The iPhone 8 is expected to utilize an edge-to-edge display that puts a 5.8-inch display in a handset roughly the size of a 4.7-inch iPhone. 5.15 inches of the 5.8-inch display will be usable. The difference will be used for a wide row of virtual buttons.

The Cupertino company is also expected to announce a more standard 4.7-inch iPhone 7s and 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus alongside the "iPhone Edition." According to Mac Otakara, while those two models are expected to launch in September, the "iPhone Edition" may not launch until well after that.

Oh crap. Edition was a dumb a** name for the watch and it's an equally dumb a** name for the phone. Hopefully this is not true.

What about those on Apple's yearly upgrade plan?, do you think Apple will let them have the Edition/8/whatever it's called? Or will they say "tough-luck, new purchases only, it's a 7s/7s Plus for you guys"?

I think Apple or the cellco, who ever is doing the financing will act exactly as car makers do when they do their "pull ahead" deals with loans and financing. The goal is to get customers to upgrade to something more expensive. So of course they are going to tell customers, here is your iPhone 7, but for only a few dollars more per month you can have this shiny new 8.

The iPhone is Apple's bread and butter. If it doesn't keep revenue even a current pace it's ticking time bomb. That is well understood even by people not well versed in business. So I don't think Apple is going to do anything that would kill sales. The 8 might be a couple hundreds more expensive than the 7s but it won't be unaffordable, esp. with carrier financing. Apple (TC) has also shown with the iPad Pro 9.7 that it's willing to increase price at the risk of losing sales. The increased revenue makes up for the lost sales -- at least that is what the iPad Pro 9.7 seems to have taught Apple if you listen to their conference calls. Apple is more concerned about increasing revenue than marketshare.
Some parts of the world dont have carrier financing. The prices are going to be crazy there especially thanks to BREXIT

Sorry, you misinterpret my post .... I mean there have been so many differing rumours that it's getting to the point where every eventuality has been covered so that there isn't anything new to report. These people in the know just throw hundreds of guesses out there that they are invariably right in the end.

Ah, OK. Sorry about that. Yes, I did think you meant something else - that details didn't matter, not that there were so many divergent ones here.

And it will run iOS Version. Yea that's it. The new iPhone Edition running iOS Version. Moronic. Hopefully Apple has more sense than to name the phone Edition.

These several articles on the iPhone 8 stating a "Useable" screen size of 5.15 inches are fine but I haven't seen one that states what the useable screen size is on the current iPhones for comparison purposes. Anyone know what the current usable screen size is on the 7 Plus so I can compare?

By the time it ships, they'll have the next one ready to announce. This will be the first iPhone Ill completely stay away from.

Yes, but they keep bragging about how cheap service is outside the US so there is that. A lot of things are more expensive overseas. Heck Rolex watches are cheaper in the US than Switzerland. But the US is one of the iPhone's biggest markets and one that really matters. Apple won't be able to please everyone here and probably doesn't want to because of supply constraints. Apple could even limit the countries it rolls out the phone.

Um, no it won't be called iPhone Edition. iPhone Pro. Relax folks, nothing to see here.

It will be released with a minor delay due to component sourcing. Not "well after..."

Not my job. But the money Apple pays their team to come up with stuff like that and the best they can do is the exact same name as an Apple watch? If the point of the phone is it's next level and something big for the 10th anniversary, I'd expect something with a bit more excitement or at the very least, some more thought put into it. For a company that's been losing touch with the younger generation to Samsung and Google, a cool name like Edition is not gonna turn many heads either.

Sorry if I consider that a lazy cop out reply. There are a lot of things in life which are not our job.
But, when you criticize something you should have at least a "better" or some kind of a suggestion.

Since you are young, you also know (at least you should) that there is no way anybody can make everybody happy with anything in todays social media driven world. Whatever one suggests , there will be haters.

That includes anything you or I could come up with.

Lastly, to condemn Apple on a rumor is already questionable in my book.

Edition is such a weird naming convention. It will always feel like it's lacking a word to me. The ___ Edition. iPhone ____ (anniversary?) Edition. Not just iPhone Edition. Blah.

If they do release three separate ones, the most expensive had better have significant features over the other two. More than likely I will get the 4.7 which will probably have the least features which will suck.

These renderings are stupid. Remove the physical spot where the button is to get more screen real-estate and then put the button up there full time. I hope they don't follow that renderers path if they are doing away with the physical location of the home button.

If a name excites you more than the merits of the product I think that says more about you. I've bought many great products which I can't even remember the name or it had some contrived number. I've also bought a lot of products with features that had cool names for 100% worthless features.

So are you a marketing fan or a tech fan? Genius features and styling get my attention, not names. Seems rather shallow to put that much stock in a product name.

I'm reminded of an OpEd in a late 1990s MacUser magazine... They were lamenting the really lame names of the Macs when they had such cool codenames during development. They suggested the model name "butt kicker". That's what I think the iPhone "Edition" should be named: iPhone Butt Kicker. Who wouldn't want to say they own a butt kicker? Someone ask what you're phone and you say it's the phone that kicks your butt. The potential is endless.

I know these are mock-ups of the 8, but what's the point of having a full screen if a portion of it is going to be taken up by the home button at all times? It just looks tacky to me.

Believe me, that wont happen. Do you think while you are playing games or watching video in portrait mode, one side of display will have home button or other buttons there? Just like today, they will leave that area for apps to decide.

Angela Ahrendts is Senior Vice President of Retail. Yes it's fun to blame the most visible woman at Apple for just about everything just because...well you tell me why you would blame someone in charge of retail for coming up with watchbands. Her job is figuring out the best way to sell them through Apple's retail channels. And yes, she has made a hash of it and yes you can legitimately blame her for that. But by Grabthar's Hammer, can we all please stop blaming her for the plagues of Egypt, global warming, crop circles and bad ideas at Apple that are more fun to blame on Eddy Cue? It is much, much more fun and satisfying to blame Eddy Cue for things. Because...purple shirts and he hangs out with Will.i.am on occasion. That's the same reason I blame everything that goes wrong in my life on Fergie.

What ever happened to BLAME CANADA?

Funny enough what their sign spells:
