Grrrrr, that pesky "marketing woman!" Oh wait, isn't marketing handled by Schiller? A bloke? :)

One thing I would never accuse Apple of is gimmicky stuff. There might be something that not everyone finds useful (you can't please everyone all the time), but I can't put my finger on anything that's a gimmick.

I was referring to Angela (can't remember her last name). Bet she came with the idea of watch bands.

The MBP touchbar is gimmicky in my opinion. Increased price, decreased battery size, decreased battery life due to increase in extra CPU. Questionable utility.

I'm still not fully convinced that 3 new models will be released at once. It just would be such a huge departure from the past and could be confusing to the average consumer. Not impossible, though.

I am thinking that, if they go the "3 phones" route, an updated iPhone (either updated SE or 7s/Plus) will be released at the rumored spring event, and then the totally redesigned iPhone 8/Plus in the fall. That would make 3 new iPhone models for the year, not all at once, which these "analysts" could be misinterpreting. But, it would be weird having a "new" iPhone just ~6 months before the new flagship. Just a thought.

NEWS FLASH .... new iPhone will have a screen of some size using some technology. It will have a design, and will cost an amount of money. It will also be named something.

You heard it here first.

Sure. And a car is a car, a house is a house, a baseball player is a baseball player. Details don't matter, right?

Apart from it being the 10th anniversary, what evidence is there to suggest that this year is supposed to be the iPhone 8? Every other iPhone has had an S year. If history is any indication, this year would be a iPhone 7s year.

I fear people are hyping this year up leading to disappointment.

iPhone Edition (2017)
iPhone Edition (2018])

Pretty sure watch bands pre-dated AA's very existence. I'm not a huge fan of her's but watch bands are not Apple's problem. Apple has sold plenty of sillier accessories even in the Job's era. Remember iPod socks?

  • iPad (2010)
  • iPad 2 (2011)
  • iPad (early 2012)
  • iPad (late 2012)
  • iPad Air (2013)
  • iPad Air 2 (2014)
  • iPad Pro (2015)
  • iPad Pro (2016)
My point: Apple has deviated from expected names before.

The iPhone 4.7" and 5.5" models were a departure from the past two -- also first time two different top tier models were released. I don't think it would be shocking to see Apple erect a new higher tier here with the 8 or Edition or whatever. Consumer confusing happens when there are several models very similar to each other in price and features that it makes it hard to figure out which one is best for them. Based on the features and price of the 8 vs the 7s that doesn't look to be an issue. It looks to me that the 8 will be to the iPhone what the ///M line is to BMW or the S line to Audi.

There have been rumours since before iPhone 7. The narrative was essentially "The iPhone 7 will be an iPhone 6SS because Apple have almost got a huge upgrade ready, which will debut in 2018."

Evidence? This is Mac Rumors. Most every article here is based on hearsay and conjecture -- sometimes fantasy.

But to be clear, the most embraced rumor says there will be a 7s, a small update to the 7. The "8" is a stand-in name for an all-new, higher tier model iPhone. No one knows what Apple would call it so they are just saying "8" for lack of anything better.

Seems it would be odd business decision to announce a high end phone to be released later, with two other modest updated phones being released in the near future, wouldn't that be potential for an overall lack of phone sales while people wait to see/wait to buy the new phone?

The two different sizes were a big departure, true. But, if Apple goes the 7s and 8 route, I think they will need to do more than just upgraded internals/camera for the 7s to sell well. If they save the all-new design and new features for the 8, AND make the 8 much more expensive, then Apple will not be on par with other companies' flagship devices (i.e. the S8). Point is - there must be a new model each year that is both affordable to most consumers AND competitive in terms of features/design.

Well, they can put out anything they want, as long as they remember to keep the only model that I can operate with one hand updated. Yes, small hands, so it's the actual screen size that matters, not the phone size, and 4" is the most i can do 1 handed.

I agree. Apple must release a model that can compete with the other new smartphones, and if the Galaxy S8 leaks are accurate, people will see it as "new" while the 7s would look old hat, IF they don't add any features.

People will buy the new models as soon as they are released. And quickly dump them and upgrade to the Edition model as soon as it's released. That way they constantly have the latest tech and maintain their status of being among the elite.
Wow! Just Wow!

It is just a freaking "phone, communicator, music player"! Unless this is your only computer, dude.

Much ado nothing. Just R.E.L.A.X.

It'll be nteresting to see just how many people are willing to go deeper into their pockets for more advanced technology and design. It makes sense to cater to those who are willing to spend extra dollars for more pricey components. A one-size-fits-all simplified model doesn't work when your varied user base is in the millions.
