Really Apple? A $1000 for a cell phone that pretty much can do what iPhone 6,6s, 7 or 7s. Why? Because it has been 10 years? Because the new phone will do few extra tricks, this is ridiculous. But there is a lots of people out there that might think a new phone it's priority for them. Sorry, Apple I will not pay you that much money for a iPhone that next year will cost half the price. The only excitement for me is iOS 11, and if happens Apple TV with 4k.

Did the iPhone 4 cost 1000USD because of the breakthrough that supposed the Retina Display? No. It cost the same as the year before.

Did the iPhone 5S cost 1000USD because of the breakthrough that supposed TouchID? No. It cost the same as the year before.

iPhone 8 is 8, not 8 Plus. iPhone 8 base capacity should cost THE SAME as iPhone 7 base capacity, no matter what the base capacity of each of them is.

If an iPhone 8 Plus is released, it should be priced inline with the iPhone 7s Plus price.

What they are releasing as iPhone 8 is what iPhone 7 should have been. For me, releasing a 7s, pricing it like an iPhone 7, with the same processor as the 8 makes no sense. It you didn’t had it ready for last year, ok. Last year you released an iPhone 6ss (7) and this year you release the 8. That’s all. No need for 7s models. Only release the which is like a combination of the base and the Plus. Plus screen size on base model size. And if you want, price it between them. But not $350 more than last years one.

$699 (between $649 of the 7 and $749 of the 7 Plus) should be a fair price, considering it’s a combination of a normal and Plus model, and should replace them in this year releases.

iPhone 8 shouldn’t be considered an iPhone Plus Plus, it should be instead a normal yearly update of the base model, that comes one year later.

Why on earth are people moaning?

It's meant to be their special edition iPhone and it's priced around the same as the top end iPhone 7+ ($969 before tax) currently is.

If you don't want to pay premium prices then it's probably not a great idea to go for the special premium model.
so new model = special edition
got
it

Considering how often I use my phone every day for all kinds of things and purposes, I’d still be willing to pay that amount of money. I’ve spent way more on things I use far less in my daily life..

I would agree if spending 1k was the only option however improved contrast ratio of OLED and wireless charging isn't worth a $350 dollar premium over the base model.

Why? Because I like many others wish Apple's design team would get their act together and drop this light and thin nonsense and actually product decent products. the Apple ecosystem is still the most tightly integrated and is very good. I bash their hardware because of some recent design decisions - 16GB limit on their top tier laptop, keyboards with virtually no travel, no matte screen option, 'workstation class' laptops with no Ethernet port (yes some of us do need this and if you suggest I dongle I'll show you where to insert it), more recent laptops with only USB-C ports (#dongles!!!), dropping the headphone jack on the iPhone (why???), no modular Mac Pro, no regular updates to the Mac Pro, no stand alone offering between the Mini and the Pro, dropping products like aperture and no official roadmap for any professional products. Apple make good consumer products, but beyond this they are poor where once they were quite good. I don't need reassurance, at all, I'm now just amused that Apple will be charging over $1000 for a phone and people will blindly follow this. Going back to PC and moving over to Android has taught me to open my eyes a little and see just how much choice there is out there, choice which Apple no longer provides in it's product line. That's the truth - Apple is no longer the best, but still has the highest pricing.

Personally, I am so happy to have been blessed to live in a time and place on this earth where the biggest thing I have to complain about is potholes on my drive to work and the price of the new iPhone.

If you made a product that everybody/many people want(s) would you sell it for less than you can get?[/QUOTE]
It may be called smartphone, however you are really using a hand held computer with incredible capabilities.
(BTW: All brands, not just the iPhone)

You are free to just get a FREE $ 5.00 a month phone at Puretalk or similar other providers. Easy to make phone calls if that is all you need.

Finally, you have no idea what the cost structure is for all related "smartphone" services and why are people always trying to decide what to do with other peoples money?

Unfair, overpriced, not worth it and a long list of complaints.

If you made a product that everybody/many people want(s) would you sell it for less than you can get?

Believe or not some people do! Not everyone in the world operates on pure greed.

Multiple rumors have suggested the upcoming "iPhone 8" could be the most expensive that Apple has ever released, with several analysts calling it a "premium" device costing upwards of $1,000. While not exactly contradicting those rumors, a report out this week indicates Apple's OLED iPhone line-up may in fact start at a fraction below that figure.

In a column for The New York Times, Brian X Chen quotes anonymous sources who reveal that among Apple's refreshed iPhones next month will be a "premium model" priced "at around $999".

Daring Fireball's John Gruber believes Chen's source indicates the iPhone 8 will indeed start at $999, with a higher storage capacity model at $1099 and maybe another at $1199. Based on alleged leaks earlier this week, these price points could correspond with 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB, respectively.

One other possible scenario previously suggested by Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski is that the iPhone 8 will be available in 128GB and 256GB capacities, for $999 and $1,099, respectively (the 256GB iPhone 7 Plus already sells for $969). It's unclear how these prices will reflect in other countries, in particular the U.K., where many Apple products now mirror dollar prices in pound sterling.

Factors like the OLED display, inductive wireless charging, new biometric features, and camera improvements - including a 3D sensing capability - are believed to have driven up the price, but Apple is also thought to be pitching the OLED iPhone as either a luxury item or a "pro" level device, or perhaps a mixture of both.

Reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the OLED iPhone will cost in excess of $1,000, as does an inside source that spoke to Fast Company, so nothing is confirmed yet. Apple is expected to send out media invites next week to its September iPhone launch event, which could fall on September 12, according to the most recent rumors.

Maybe now's a good time to look at other colour accessories? ;)

Ummm, why is there so much excitement for what’s being called the iPghne 8’s great new screen when in at least in the mock ups, it has still yet to achieve the wrap around edge to edge like Samsung achieved years ago? I’m withholding my final judgement until the phone is officially announced, but...

...why do you and others like you continue to come to an Apple-centric forum only to insult Apple products if you genuinely believe you moved to a superior product line? ...

Why? Because I like many others wish Apple's design team would get their act together and drop this light and thin nonsense and actually product decent products. ...

This only works if you think Apple reads and takes advice from MacRumors.
If you wish Apple 'to get their act together', wouldn't it be better to just write directly to Apple?

I don't think venting on a board that Apple doesn't own, likely doesn't read or take advice from will do much good, especially if you don't even use Apple products, will be productive or achieve your desire result you stated above.

Looking forward to a few knowledge based "some people" examples from this industry, with cost information, gross profit margins, net profit, R & D expenses etc.etc.

If you don't have that information your post is questionable.
