WHAT? This model could be $130 more than the 7 Plus 128GB that I bought last year?

WHAT? This is in the range of what Samsung is charging for the Note 8.

WHAT WHAT? There should be a cheaper model available if I want to go with that?

Yup Apple has lost it's mind.

That is the 25K question -- whether this is a one-off edition or a new flashship. I can see Apple going either way, but if it's the new flagship it's going to be a challenge for Apple to come out with true new features every year for two different lines and keep them both fresh. Apple can play this so many ways.

I won't be surprised if this is the beginning of a transition to a new iPhone naming regime kind of like we saw in 2015 with the emergence of the original iPad Pro, dropping the Air this year and mini's future TBA. Will be interesting to see how it plays out next month.
If they label it the iPhone Pro, it's likely a new top-end model (at least until the Pro Plus that better exist, me want 6.3"+ screen).

Samsung hiked the price of the Note 8, and the Pixels have gotten steadily more expensive/premium. It's a trend, not Apple doing this alone. Not sure what market dynamics are in play, but probably the same ones making concerts and whatever else more expensive.

Also the majority of US customers are now on payment plans. So this will be $33 to $41 a month depending on carrier.

As opposed to the $21 to $40 per month options that were offered this year.

Plus... as long as the 7S model still hits $649... it's still the same.

Thats $1,247 CDN for the base mode. As much as I love Apple, I can't justify it.

Been rocking my iPhone 6 since its release.

That being said, it is a nice phone and I wish I could drop that much lol

Nope, that’s where I draw the line. No way I’d pay $1000 for a decrease in my phone’s capacity. I really hope this report is off the mark.

yet we still have to wait another year before Apple stops treating it as an expensive premium rather than standardized, while it is standardized on similarly-priced competitors.

This is my biggest issue with the price. Nothing in that device will be premium or really even a world's first, apart from maybe if they've perfected facial recognition - but still not a world's first. But, in Apple's eyes, this is a premium device with features that worth paying far more than the regular iPhone for, even though other devices on the market have had these features for years. That's what bums me. That people on these forums don't feel like Apple are totally playing them.

Having downgraded from a 128gig 7+ to 32gig SE (maximized resale value...) has taught me something.

64 gigs is plenty. I have a 512 iPP 12.5 gen 2. Perfect.

So I'm finally out of the "must buy at least 128gig" crowd. Thanks T-Mo fully unlimited, no BS!

$1,000 is too much. I am honestly thinking about not upgrading this year. If I do upgrade, then it will likely be to the 7S. I enjoy having the latest and greatest tech, but at $1,000 for the base model... it's just not worth it to me.

If this article is correct, then I think Apple is pricing this above its value threshold. I updated my signature with my lifetime Apple purchases to provide a little context as to how willing I am to pay the Apple premium. So yeah, I am a die hard Apple guy saying they want too much. They are innovating too slowly and asking too much when they finally do go to market.

more like very intelligent to exploit their consumer base accordingly.

Exploiting gullible customers whilst preaching about community and social responsibilities. Stop with the hippy crap and be blunt about the fact you play people into opening their wallets, without really providing great value for money - in most cases. My annoyance stems from the fact that Apple go on about trying to make the world a better place, and for the most part they have, but their real goal is to see how much they can get people to pay for dated technology because it has an Apple logo on it. At some point you have to wonder whether Apple are just taking you for a ride.

Then it's difficult to swallow price hikes (iPhone 8, Brexit price hike) when the company is sitting on enormous piles of free cash and avoiding tax. Talk about social responsibility and caring about the communities they sell their products in...

Will you be ready to pay a 1000$ for it, though? It would be nice if people could just say, “Hey, Apple, this time you are really pushing it!” and vote with their wallets, as they did with the original iPhone, resulting in a significant price drop?

Not paying this for a phone, ever!

I voted with my wallet last year with the iPhone 7 Plus and kept my 6S Plus. Then two months ago I caved and bought a used 128 7+ for $625 even (on swappa dot com). After realizing how much better (and faster) the 7+ is with 3GB RAM, the camera, screen, etc, I’m still on the fence that the $250 saved was worth it (both my 6 Plus and 6S Pus had terrible issues with bluetooth that I put up with).

But I’m putting that $250 plus the sale of my 6S and soon to be 7 towards the 8 on launch day, and I’m sure a lot of people had more guts than I did and skipped the 7 entirely, so the 8 will be like a reward for waiting so long.

IMO, the 6S series were what the 4.7/5.5” should have been all along, the tech and means of production just weren’t there yet. For the 7, Apple had to prerelease some of the 8 features, like wide gamut support. Kind of like how they brought 6S features to the 5SE. I’m already thinking of what Apple might have taken out of the “8S” for this year’s 8 so they have something to add back next year. Touch ID behind the screen maybe? Or eye tracking that scrolls your screen? Faster wireless charging? OLED?

It's laughable that people are comparing the Apple price to the Samsung price. For the Note 8 you're getting freebies included. One freebie is 128gb of removable memory. Also 256gb SD card.

What freebies are Apple offering again?
Oh, right. Just some design that they should have upgraded into the phones years ago.

It's definitely not right but, I'll be sticking with my 7 until a better option comes along.

The only thing we can hope for is that the iPhone 8 prices itself out of the market, forcing Apple to lower prices next year or the year after.

Granted, that's probably going to happen anyway. I'm assuming that this design will be the standard design across all screen sizes come next year.

On second thought -- I say that, but I also have a hard time imaging Apple dropping the price of this design a year later and angering those that paid $1000+ for it a year prior. But you can't tell me that Apple is going to use the iPhone 6 design AGAIN next year for their lower-tier offering?

That won't happen. If you look at the iPad lineup, the Air 2 owners never got a real upgrade. You have to pay $700 minimum if you want to a real upgrade from it whereas we were getting updates in the form of iPad 4 iPad Air at the $499 price point for years. That 400 bucks iPad they have launched with a year old processor will stay that way for years on end like the Mac Mini while the top iPad Pros get all the goodies like reduced bezels, dual speakers etc. Heck the 400 iPad has an inferior display to their older Air 2 model!

Now expect the 7S design to stagnate and the phones to stay the same at that price point for years while the iPhone Pro lineup at $1000 gets all the upgrades.

Prices in the EU if the $999 for 64Gb rumor is true:

64Gb - €1189 ($1414)
256Gb - €1299 ($1533)
512Gb - €1409 ($1663)

YOU AMERICANS SHOUDL STOP COMPLAINING IMMEDIATELY!

Even if the salaries are higher in the EU, these prices are still immoral to ask here!

Remember the US prices are before sales tax.

My iphone is like a nice handheld swiss army knife. Has multiple functions that are useful day to day. My PC is like a chainsaw that gets work done way more efficiently than the swiss army knife. I see no justification for my swiss army knife approaching the cost of my chainsaw when it's still exponentially less powerful and doesn't pretend to offer more than the same basic functionality it has always had.

What odd logic. You realise that the subsidised part means the phone wasn't $199, right? It probably cost you $800+ over the course of the contract.
No it did not. Please show me the calculation.

iPhone land is soooo much easier & cheaper by just staying 2-3 years behind the curve. New iPhones nowadays aren't that much different than the 6.

Boy this phone better have some groundbreaking features. It will probably start at 1350 - 1400 off contract Canadian $, lets say 1400, I have 12% sales tax in my provence = $1568. Even with a contract our providers don't discount the much it would probably be at least $1000 = $1112 w tax. Ouch. Though I could somewhat justify it, as many others probably can from the standpoint it's probably the one item we all us the most and depend on and use the most in our daily activities.

That being said losing touch ID on the front of the device I think would be a big loss unless this visual unlock security is just that good. But how can it work in the middle of the night without some bright light shining in your face and really disturbing your sleep for the rest of the night?

A used iphone 7 or SE still feel like viable options for me anyway. Still love the convenience of a small phone just don't love typing or watching video on one though.

This is probably true...but with that being said, at least with Samsung I can get a decent deal. If I want, say, their new Galaxy S8, normal price is $750. If I trade in my 6, it's $550, which is a hell of a lot more palatable than $750 or $1000. I don't struggle to pay for any phone, but where I live, you can buy a fairly reliable car for $1000. lol

I had thought about the Note but wasn't impressed and didn't think it was worth the money plus I wouldn't get a Samsung phone on release day. The price drops with deals on them fairly quick

The Samsung S8 Plus was released towards the end of April. I bought my son an S8 Plus the second week of May for 699.
Walmart had $150 off the S8 and S8Plus 849-150=699. Said right then I'd wait a month and pick up a Samsung phone if I ever decided to get one.

I will probably wind up with the new iPhone but debating on waiting to see what complaints come out.
At $1000 it will probably be my last iPhone. I still use my iP6 but with the stuff Apple looks to do with AR. The newer phone may required.
