so new model = special edition
got
it

It's not the standard new model, the 7S and the 7S Plus are the new standard models that will be released alongside this model.

The iPhone 8 (if that's even what it is called) is a special release celebrating a decade since the iPhone was released and will be priced at the luxury/premium pricepoint.

That's it! I'm going off the grid!

lol, back to smoke signals and messenger pigeons!

Lol, can you imagine people's faces if this 10th-anniversary iPhone '8' was an eleborte hoax to hide Apple's true plans...

The incredible iPhone OG (off grid) edition comes in two beautiful finishes: signal smoke gray and messenger pigeon white... it has done away with the complicated distractions that have plagued smartphones since we introduced iPhone ten years ago... iPhone OG has removed all cell phone connectivity. iPhone OG has no iPod functionality at all. iPhone OG is not an internet communication device in any way. It's our thinnest, most luxury iPhone ever and I want to invite Empty Product Box up on stage to not give you any kind of demo whatsoever...

*non-demo*

... isn't that incredible? Thank you Empty Product Box for that non-demo. That was refreshingly light and simple. That's the kind of stress-free, frictionless experience you can expect from this device.

iPhone OG starts at $999 for the 8GB model, (which believe us will be plenty, because the device doesn't really do much at all), but users with large amounts of TextEdit documents can choose the 16GB or 4TB editions at $1099 and $10,099 respectively. We are taking pre-orders for iPhone OG today, but it will never, ever ship.

Basic economics people. Supply and demand - these will still sell out no matter how much you complain.
The only thing we can hope for is that the iPhone 8 prices itself out of the market, forcing Apple to lower prices next year or the year after.

Granted, that's probably going to happen anyway. I'm assuming that this design will be the standard design across all screen sizes come next year.

On second thought -- I say that, but I also have a hard time imaging Apple dropping the price of this design a year later and angering those that paid $1000+ for it a year prior. But you can't tell me that Apple is going to use the iPhone 6 design AGAIN next year for their lower-tier offering?

But for $1000 you can get a 2 year contract with calls/texts/data included, plus the phone.

Maybe in the U.K. Not in the U.S. In the U.S. if you are using a postpaid carrier you either buy the phone outright w/ no contract or get 0% financing based on full price with 12 or 24 month contract. The data cost is separate from the phone cost.

I bought my iPhone 7 outright last time because I didn't want a contract and I did want a world phone. Not sure how I'll handle it this year.

At the point where people stop buying them. If the devices keep flying off the shelves apple will continue to raise the price. Like little children who will keep pushing the limits to see how much they can get away with.

You couldn't be further from the truth.

Apple is not raising prices to see what they can get away with.
Their business model has many times been to give you more tech for the same start up price.
Of course that only works via scale of economy in purchasing, however when the sheer amount of added components and technologies changes they do have to charge more.

So, they add up all the costs of the components cost, overhead , and other charges and mark it up by X %. That's the prize.

I don't get all the whining. A fantastic electronic device that does multiple jobs.
No camera to carry, games in the pocket , internet etc.etc.

If it was possible to make these phones for less they would all do it.

From what I see all the top models are pretty close in pricing range.

Apple does not compete with bottom feeders who sell string and can type devices.

It's going to be a game time decision for me. I do like the new form factor but still $1000 is a lot of money to drop on a phone when at the end of the day I bet the majority of people do nothing but text, social media stuff and videos/music.

Part of me is like get next's year model. I remember the issues when they went from the 3GS to the iPhone4.
It's sort of like what people say about cars. Never buy the 1st year new body style redesign but get the next year when the majority of the issues are resolved.

Also I think at $1000 people are going to start keeping their phones a little longer and I don't see people willing to buy last year model used for $700

If the leaks are accurate and there is this screen cutout at the top, it’s not Apple designers driving the decision, but rather Apple trying to give consumers what they want (or think they want). I don’t think there is a good, functional reason to go bezel free, other than it can look “cool”, but because other manufacturers are moving this direction, it’s almost impossible for Apple not to do similarly.

Hopefully at some point in the future, they will figure out how to make sensors and cameras work through the active screen, which at that point you could have a bezel free device as sensors and camera modules could be almost anywhere behind the screen.
Agreed. It's probably Marketing that's driving the bezel-free nonsense because they feel they need to "keep up" with the crowd.

Whatever happened to "thinking different"?

How I miss the days of subsidized iPhones starting at $199.

They still have it!

From the Apple Store:

"
From $32.41/mo. with the
iPhone Upgrade Program.
Or pay now from $649."

You always paid the full price in the cost of the service, but just didn't notice it.

When I paid for my phone up front the Verizon service dropped $20 a month.

Yep, the 7S is the usual iterative update and will be the base model, thus the iPhone 8 will essentially be a "special edition".

It's not just about the "Iterative" update. It goes well beyond that. The 7S will be extremely popular, because it has the most affordable price point attached, which most will purchase a phone based on what they can afford or carrier Costs. The OLED model will still be heavily constrained, because it's the latest and greatest, and some will have no boundary on the price point to obtain one. Then factor What the average consumer actually cares about in terms of what they want from the new iPhone.

While I agree it's not the "standard" new model I disagree it's a "special" celebration release. If that was true it would only be offered for one year and never be iterated on. That ain't gonna happen...

Not paying this amount for a phone, phones are day-to-day communication tools and not status symbols. As for the “greatest latest technology” put into it and “driving the prices up”, I am not interested in wireless charging, like the current Touch ID and iPhone 7 display is great as it is, imho. Let’s see the whole price lineup when they are all out.

For me it is iPhone 8/Pro or nothing. I will definitely not buy another iPhone 6 update.

Will you be ready to pay a 1000$ for it, though? It would be nice if people could just say, “Hey, Apple, this time you are really pushing it!” and vote with their wallets, as they did with the original iPhone, resulting in a significant price drop?

Prices in the EU if the $999 for 64Gb rumor is true:

64Gb - €1189 ($1414)
256Gb - €1299 ($1533)
512Gb - €1409 ($1663)

YOU AMERICANS SHOUDL STOP COMPLAINING IMMEDIATELY!

Even if the salaries are higher in the EU, these prices are still immoral to ask here!

Not paying this for a phone, ever!

All this special model does is it bring it in line with its competitors, which have enjoyed wireless charging and OLED for years. In fact, they still better it because of expandable storage. Apple thinks dongles are ok, but a little slot isn't?

Actually, I think I'm pretty close to the truth. I understand that new techs come with a price. However, in Apple world new techs come with a nose-bleeding price and old techs cost about the same years after years (even though techology gets cheaper over time through mass production and better manufacturing process). I have no problem with what Apple charge for its devices. Neither do I have any problem with people buying them; it's their money after all. I'm just stating my observation.

So based on the current pricing scheme in Canada (which is currently a little above the exchange rate), we'll probably be looking at $1399 for the lowest storage tier and over $1500 for the next storage tier up. Even with a carrier subsidy we'll probably have to drop $900+. I think I'm going to pass on this one. I can't really see it being worth that kind of money, especially for a device that is only meant to last a couple years. My 6s still does everything I need it to, so perhaps I'll see what 2018 brings...

Considering how often I use my phone every day for all kinds of things and purposes, I’d still be willing to pay that amount of money. I’ve spent way more on things I use far less in my daily life..
I totally agree. Considering I spent more than 1400 for my 4k TV and I don't nearly use it as much, 1k for a smartphone is not bad at all.

That price was set last September. The most recent iPad Pro update has the $1029 model priced at £989. A $999 launch price would convert to £960 if they use the same rate.
If it's $999 in the US, I reckon it'll cost £969 in the UK. I can't see that going down too well in the UK.

Then again, I'll be buying one; so if Apple can entice me, they'll entice others.

Yep, I figured as much.

I'll just wait until we have some facts...no point in getting riled up over rumors.

So far from what we've heard, I'll be going from the Note5 to the Note8, unless Apple surprises me AND my company will have the new iPhone avaliable as a choice (it gives us the choice between Sammy or Apple exclusively).

I do want to give Apple a shot, but I'm not choosing an "old" phone when I can get a truly new device.
Well enjoy, the note 8 looks like a great phone :) However, what we were discussing was the transition of iPhone from a mainstream device, to an exclusive one only the elite can afford. By this point, realistically we know the basic gist of what's going to be releasing, a more expensive oled, and two LCD models at, presumably the same price as the 7 currently retails for. So I'm struggling to see how this translates to the iPhone becoming elitist? Don't Samsung have a range of models at different price points and, don't those different models have different features to suit said price points?

Personally I'm looking at a 7s+ purely because I'm not [yet] sold on oled. I've found the pentile layout makes a significantly higher resolution necessary to hide it than a standard LCD of the same size, and I still prefer the cleaner whites of LCD. Of course that's unless Apple come on stage and show off how Samsung has improved their panels since I last owned an oled phone ;)

That is the 25K question -- whether this is a one-off edition or a new flashship. I can see Apple going either way, but if it's the new flagship it's going to be a challenge for Apple to come out with true new features every year for two different lines and keep them both fresh. Apple can play this so many ways.

I won't be surprised if this is the beginning of a transition to a new iPhone naming regime kind of like we saw in 2015 with the emergence of the original iPad Pro, dropping the Air this year and mini's future TBA. Will be interesting to see how it plays out next month.
