My iphone is like a nice handheld swiss army knife. Has multiple functions that are useful day to day. My PC is like a chainsaw that gets work done way more efficiently than the swiss army knife. I see no justification for my swiss army knife approaching the cost of my chainsaw when it's still exponentially less powerful and doesn't pretend to offer more than the same basic functionality it has always had.

The only argument to that is that you always have your smartphone on you and most people now use their smartphones more often than their computers. Your smartphone is still not as powerful as a computer but it's much closer in power than your chainsaw vs your swiss army knife. ;). That's the logic I might have to use to convince myself to pay that much for an iPhone 8 but I may take another peak at the Samsung S8, though I dislike skinned android and the measurements/aspect ratio of that phone or wait to see what the new pixel phone is like.

Why? Because I like many others wish Apple's design team would get their act together and drop this light and thin nonsense and actually product decent products. the Apple ecosystem is still the most tightly integrated and is very good. I bash their hardware because of some recent design decisions - 16GB limit on their top tier laptop, keyboards with virtually no travel, no matte screen option, 'workstation class' laptops with no Ethernet port (yes some of us do need this and if you suggest I dongle I'll show you where to insert it), more recent laptops with only USB-C ports (#dongles!!!), dropping the headphone jack on the iPhone (why???), no modular Mac Pro, no regular updates to the Mac Pro, no stand alone offering between the Mini and the Pro, dropping products like aperture and no official roadmap for any professional products. Apple make good consumer products, but beyond this they are poor where once they were quite good. I don't need reassurance, at all, I'm now just amused that Apple will be charging over $1000 for a phone and people will blindly follow this. Going back to PC and moving over to Android has taught me to open my eyes a little and see just how much choice there is out there, choice which Apple no longer provides in it's product line. That's the truth - Apple is no longer the best, but still has the highest pricing.

Clearly Apple doesn't agree with you and they will keep heading in the direction they intend to go. It still doesn't answer my question of why you come here to bash Apple products. If your "eyes have been opened" and you are using products that are better than Apples shouldn't you be happy that you were fortunate enough to discover that there are products that better suit your needs than Apples "higher priced" inferior products?

Like I stated earlier, I think Android and Windows are vastly inferior products to Apple's. That's why I purchase Apple products. If Apple products fulfill my technology needs why would I care if Android or Windows products don't? Even more so, why would I go to an Android or Windows enthusiasts forum to bash their products when I already have what I feel to be a superior product by way of Apple.

And seriously, the headphone jack argument still? Not one time have I wished my 7 Plus still had a headphone jack. I purchased Airpods and not only did they negate having a headphone jack, it's a vastly better experience than having wires getting caught on stuff all the time. Apple isn't going to keep a headphone jack for the few that still want it when the majority could care less.

It's laughable that people are comparing the Apple price to the Samsung price. For the Note 8 you're getting freebies included. One freebie is 128gb of removable memory. Also 256gb SD card.

What freebies are Apple offering again?
Oh, right. Just some design that they should have upgraded into the phones years ago.

It's definitely not right but, I'll be sticking with my 7 until a better option comes along.

The more money you spend, the more money you lose. An Iphone SE at $399 can lose $399 worst case. That said the resale value of a near $1,000 Note 8 vs a near $1,000 Iphone will be much less. You will lose $200-$300 in resale with the Note 8 in the first year compared to the Iphone.

Considering how often I use my phone every day for all kinds of things and purposes, I’d still be willing to pay that amount of money. I’ve spent way more on things I use far less in my daily life..
That's because you're bad with your money. Not because a 1000 dollar phone makes any sense.

As phones become more like computers, I'm not surprised they are being priced more like them too.

At least you can actually turn the S8 or note 8 into a PC unlike the iphone. Samsung has DeX while apple has nothing to make the iphone really similar to a computer (missing true file manager, trackpad/mouse support, split screen too surprisingly, hdmi to usb-c, and ability to download any type of file....even a Blu Phone can do more than any iphone). I rather send my 1000 dollars to Samsung since I actually get that computer-like experience.

Did the iPhone 4 cost 1000USD because of the breakthrough that supposed the Retina Display? No. It cost the same as the year before.

Did the iPhone 5S cost 1000USD because of the breakthrough that supposed TouchID? No. It cost the same as the year before.

iPhone 8 is 8, not 8 Plus. iPhone 8 base capacity should cost THE SAME as iPhone 7 base capacity, no matter what the base capacity of each of them is.

If an iPhone 8 Plus is released, it should be priced inline with the iPhone 7s Plus price.

What they are releasing as iPhone 8 is what iPhone 7 should have been. For me, releasing a 7s, pricing it like an iPhone 7, with the same processor as the 8 makes no sense. It you didn’t had it ready for last year, ok. Last year you released an iPhone 6ss (7) and this year you release the 8. That’s all. No need for 7s models. Only release the which is like a combination of the base and the Plus. Plus screen size on base model size. And if you want, price it between them. But not $350 more than last years one.

$699 (between $649 of the 7 and $749 of the 7 Plus) should be a fair price, considering it’s a combination of a normal and Plus model, and should replace them in this year releases.

iPhone 8 shouldn’t be considered an iPhone Plus Plus, it should be instead a normal yearly update of the base model, that comes one year later.

This hits on pretty much all of my frustration with Apple. It's the ipadification pricing of all their stuff. MBP followed suit, and now it's the iPhone. Rather than give the new stuff in place of last years, they create a new "Pro" tier just to make more money. I'm fairly certain Jobs would NOT have done this. He had believed in getting the latest cool tech in the hands of as many people as possible. His method was take care of customers and in return they take care of shareholders. Cook's method is take care of shareholders.

That price doesn't surprise me to be honest. Based on those prices, I am expecting UK prices to start at £799 for the 64gb, £899 for 256gb and £1020 for 512mb.
I guess I will go for the 512mb as I have budgeted for £1100

I think the prices in the UK will be higher than that, like £949+ for 64GB so a 256GB model will be within your budget.

This makes me love my Galaxy S8+ even more. I don't miss iOS. Unbelievable that Apple will be charging that much for a phone that is catching up to what is already available on the Galaxy S8 and even the Galaxy S7. Greedy.

The whole phone craze has worn off a bit now. You really don't see the excitement you did when the first few generations came along.

People generally get a new phone when their contract or finance runs out and most probably wont want to pay a premium for what other phones are doing already. Catching up isn't the same has having something new and exciting.

Im still on a 6, we have S8's at work for development and I see a whole host of phones. The iPhone no longer stands out and the competition already has a lot of whats coming. And if it is all glass then, like the S8, it will be fragile as hell ( we have already had one shatter front and back from a small drop on carpet ) and along with the cost will generate poor customer satisfaction.

Along with the MBP it seems Apple has hit that part of its business cycle where it rests on its marketshare whilst missing that the completion is hard at work on beating it. Happens to lots of big companies, Microsoft for one.

I'm sure it will sell, but personally I'm not willed to drop a grand on a phone that can't do much more than my current one (iPhone 6) which is still running strong. It's small increments these days with smartphones and nothing really exciting.
Not much more? It will have more power, a bigger screen, better camera, better video capture, faster transfers to and from your computer, and the touch options...I have a 6 and I'm ready! Interest free, $40 for 30 months,, why not! :)

Well worth it for a better phone that runs IOS and not android but hey, thats just me...and a gazzilion other peeps :)

It's not the standard new model, the 7S and the 7S Plus are the new standard models that will be released alongside this model.

The iPhone 8 (if that's even what it is called) is a special release celebrating a decade since the iPhone was released and will be priced at the luxury/premium pricepoint.
lol sure sure, lmk where you read that...

The facial regnotion on Samsung phones get fooled by photos of the user, and as a result can't be used to authorise payments.

I'll have to check again but I do think you can use the iris scan to use Samsung Pay. I'm almost sure I saw that on my sons S8 Plus when we set it up.

Facial scan <> iris scan and that's not as easily fooled.
I don't think any android uses facial scan for NFC payment methods

If you ask me, is $1000 expensive for a iphone 8? Heck yea of course. But I won't understand who on earth will spend $700+ bucks on the new iphone 7S plus only because you can't afford the iphone 8. The "S" is not really a "S" in front of the iphone 8. On top of that, using the same design since iphone 6 ? no thanks.

So, I would recommend you either buy iphone 8, or just don't buy this year. It's a waste of money to buy that iphone 7S. If you really need to buy a new phone, buy Iphone 7 plus.

But I’m putting that $250 plus the sale of my 6S and soon to be 7 towards the 8 on launch day, and I’m sure a lot of people had more guts than I did and skipped the 7 entirely, so the 8 will be like a reward for waiting so long.

I am one of the people who did not buy 7 last year, so I will see the whole range this year and features/prices and can choose to go with discounted 7, 7S or 8 if it is priced within my budget. I don’t resell old iPhones, passing them to my family members instead, so no extra cash to justify paying too much for it.

Thats $1,247 CDN for the base mode. As much as I love Apple, I can't justify it.

Been rocking my iPhone 6 since its release.

That being said, it is a nice phone and I wish I could drop that much lol

I'm guessing more like $1299 CDN for the base model (if you compare it to the price of the Note 8). On contract probably will be $749-$799 or if you choose different type of plan that costs more per month but lower upfront cost for the phone. I think I can afford it on a contract but definitely not outright.

I’m still using my iPhone 6, so this year it’s time for the big upgrade. I’ll bite the bullet and go for a 64GB iPhone 8 - trading in the 6 might take some of the sting out of the cost.
I have an iPhone 6 as well and other than a crappy battery it's in great condition. I'd be surprised if I get more than $100 for trade in value. If this new iPhone "Pro" is going to be $1,000 I will not be purchasing.

There will be a price point for everyone.

iPhone SE - $399
iPhone 7 - $549
iPhone 7+ - $649
iPhone 7S - $649
iPhone 7S+ - $769
iPhone 8 - $999

A year ago people were still buying the 16GB model, I'm on the 64GB model and I have half of it filled up.
It seemed strange to me that someone could fill up 512GB of space on a phone.
I *could* fill up 512 GB easily with movies but I wouldn't choose to. 64 GB in a phone is the sweet spot for me.
