A 256GB regular iPhone 7 (not the plus) is currently $850. $1100 for the 256GB iPhone 8 doesn't seem all that bad. $250 is $250, but if we're getting what we're supposed to be getting it seems pretty in line. Now if the 7S phone was priced like that then we'd have reason to riot. But really... I kinda expected this...And I think im ok with it. My wallet might not be, but I am. Bring on Sept.

airpods are awesome. Simple as that.

Not exactly a "looker" for this kind of money. Compared to the gorgeous Note released Thursday its butt ugly to be fair. (assuming 10th rumors are correct of course).
Also getting a bit towards too expensive. To compare in the UK rMBP 128GB 2015 £1020 inc approx Costco UK. that thing is a Beast.

It should have all these features at the current price like other phones do so I give a big Nope! and Next in line!

This is going to be hard, but I’m not paying 1100 for a phone. I don’t care about oled or FaceID, but really really want any new AR camera features.

I hope the AR lasers and camera upgrades hit the 7s or I may just wait another year with my 6s. Last year was the first year I skipped an iPhone upgrade which was really hard to do, but the world did not end.

Not as addicted to upgraded as I once was.

I actually think it should be much more. It's the strategy employed by many companies to keep prices high along their line of goods offered.

As I answered to another poster. Apple is a company in business. They offer a product you can buy or not buy.

Purpose of a corporation is to make as much money as possible. No emotions involved!

You do not know Apple's cost structure or component pricing, or R&D expenses to name a few.

Plus, looks like a lot of new things are being packed into this phone, of course that should be for free?

So, what do your base your "GREED" comment on.

Please be specific:

The iPhone costs: $ ???

Apple's net margin is $ ?

= X % = ?

Waiting for your knowledge and what determines "GREED"

Apple have cash reserves of $256.8 billion.

They make at least 35% clear profit on everything sell, sometimes more (e.g. their storage policy contributes).

I'm sure the iPhone 8 will be a perfectly good phone, but Tim Cook's policy is to source components at the best price, get the supply chain down, and mark up the end product by at least 35%.

So the reality of paying so much - of course, a grown up should be able to make a decision. If they can't afford it, don't buy it.

But Apple also wish to enmesh their users into their ecosystem, then upsell them constantly. There was no need to remove the headphone jack. No need in 2017 to still have a propriety lightning connector. No need for countless other shady profiteering they pull when they already have $256.8 billion in the bank already.

The truth is this iPhone 8 - not even the 7S or 7S Plus - will be a glorified Apple Galaxy S8. And you can pick up an actual S8 for literally half the price now.

All empires fall, and Apple need to tread carefully.

Well enjoy, the note 8 looks like a great phone :) However, what we were discussing was the transition of iPhone from a mainstream device, to an exclusive one only the elite can afford. By this point, realistically we know the basic gist of what's going to be releasing, a more expensive oled, and two LCD models at, presumably the same price as the 7 currently retails for. So I'm struggling to see how this translates to the iPhone becoming elitist? Don't Samsung have a range of models at different price points and, don't those different models have different features to suit said price points?

Personally I'm looking at a 7s+ purely because I'm not [yet] sold on oled. I've found the pentile layout makes a significantly higher resolution necessary to hide it than a standard LCD of the same size, and I still prefer the cleaner whites of LCD. Of course that's unless Apple come on stage and show off how Samsung has improved their panels since I last owned an oled phone ;)

You have some fair points, particularly since Apple already have more iPhone models than one.

Although the skyward price direction of the MBPs may be cause of concern when the iPhone goes up in price.

Still, I think that Apple figured out that they can exist in more than one space (the super rich) without lowering their baseline, since they know they can get away with charging more.

Aside from the base iPad, all Apple products have a high price baseline and their prices have gone up from there, not down.

You aren't paying $1000 for a phone, you are paying $1000 for the whole Apple experience of using their phone. lol

I want to pay three times that price so I can slather myself in the apple experience. I can walk around with all the smugness it instills and feel so good about my sad, little pathetic life.

But, gosh darnit, I have this phone! Preeeeeeeecious.

What you say is true, I've been drooling over a new MBP but I'm just flat out not paying £2.5k for it, devalued £ or no. Partially that's because it's over specced for my use anyway - I don't need a GPU and wouldn't use it, but mainly it's just the principle of how obscene the price actually is. Particularly as you have to add £180 to the base price straight off to get to a reasonable storage level of 512 gigs.

For the iPhone I think having the SE and last gen available does mitigate the price somewhat - if the 7s is really underwhelming or they do put the price up more I might consider a discounted 7 (or even another brand entirely, I'm curious to see why the Nokia 8 brings to the table certainly). But I do take your point that if they tried corralling people into paying more by slowly eliminating the lower priced options after people had come across to the platform it'd be a bad move... luckily I think it'd probably lose them too much business for them to even consider it, though you never know when Wall Street is ultimately calling the tune.

So the minimum storage options currently for each phone work out like this price-wise:

iPhone SE (32GB) = £379
iPhone 6S (32GB) = £499
iPhone 7 (32GB) = £599
iPhone 7 Plus (32GB) = £719

Therefore my guess is the new line-up will be like this:

iPhone SE (64GB) = £399
iPhone 7 (64GB) = £529
iPhone 7S (64GB) = £629
iPhone 7S Plus (64GB) = £749
iPhone 8 (128GB) = £999

i really hope for 999$ iphone 8 64GB and 1199$ for the 256 GB
IN YOUR FACE SAMSUNG !!! You thought you will beat Apple in price ah??

How does this help you personally? Most of us are working our butts off to buy this stuff while Apple execs sit in their office laughing all the way to the bank. I'm not sure who's "face" this is in but I will say Apple's customers are taking it up the *** just to have the brand name.

but I will say Apple's customers are taking it up the *** just to have the brand name.

Depends. If this iPhone is exactly the same as the 7s/7+ except it has an OLED screen, nothing more. Sure. But if it's OLED + inductive or wireless charging + optical zoom + AR, a true new flagship phone, then it might be worth the upcharge.

Apple will have to make the case for it. I don't think people are going to buy it unless it's a cool phone and different from the 7s/7+. Phones are now boring. Upgrading isn't as exciting like it once was. No one is paying $1000+ unless it's worth it in some way.

The 7 Plus 256GB is $969....

I do not understand this outrage at all. Sell your old iPhone and put it towards the new one. Pay for the phone over 24/30 months.

It really isn't that bad...
The mental gymnastics here. 256gb plus model is the TOP TIER available. The new phone BASE might be more than the previous top model. Just because..no thanks

Why are people moaning???? Really??? I can hardly express what a load of crap this is. The fact is, its hardly a "premium" device. I would characterize it as a regular upgrade in the Iphone cycle......at best, catching up to competition. Which would make the rest of the phones coming out (Iphone 7s) a low cost version. If Im being honest, what is so premium? What justifies a price point STARTING AT $1000??? New OLED screen? Iphone just playing catch up here. Wireless charging? Also playing catch up. Other phones have had it for years. Apple made it clear that they were not going to "join the crowd" and put wireless charging in their phones until they developed actual wireless charging. And I agreed with them. The options out today and in the new Iphone 8 are NOT wireless charging. If I have to put my device on some stupid pad that needs to be plugged in, I may as well just plug in my phone. Well, turns out, Apple couldnt deliver, couldnt get it to work in time. So now we get the same lame tech everyone else has had for years and its supposed to be "premium". No. I would have been fine waiting. So, what else we got? The new biometric features!!!!! Ohhhh, fancy. Oh wait, this new feature is only there because Apple couldnt get touch i.d. which is superior to face i.d. in every way, to work under their OLED screen. So once again, because the good, premium feature wasnt ready for prime time, they did some weak work-around. So, now we get lame face i.d., again, a feature others have had. I would rather have touch i.d and if you cant get it right, fine. Il wait, but dont act like we are getting a super great premium device. Shall I go on? The specs are NOT lighting the world on fire. Many other models have more storage, more RAM, etc.
So how is this price justified? Had they come out with OLED screen, TRUE wireless charging, so I can walk into my house and my phone starts charging, sitting on kitchen counter, on desk in bedroom, on coffee table. Thats what they originally wanted. Got touch i.d. to work under the screen. Along with a nice upgrade in ios 11. I would be fine. But they have done NOTHING compelling to justify that price. Im actually not that far from what I think is fair. For the OLED screen, faster processor, I suppose to start a 128gb should be $899, 256gb $999 and 512gb $1099.
That seems fair to me.

Totally agree!

I think they'll lose some customers if 128GB is £999, the competition has become so compelling.
Apple really need to sharpen their pencil.

No one seems to understand the reasoning behind the iPhone Pro pricing. If this 5.8" iPhone Pro was priced similarly to the iPhone 7S/7S+, it would be a no brainer.

So the real question is, how much more does Apple need to charge so that majority of the people still buy the 7S/7S+?

I believe that even at $999 it's a no brainer. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if the starting price is $1199. For anyone that blinks before preordering this, it'll quickly be back ordered until January 2018. Highest end iPhone has been close to $1000 for years now, so I don't really see this as sticker shock. Hopefully many of you are discouraged from preordering this perfection of a phone, so my preorder goes through smoothly. :D;)

Why does Apple even release 7s and 7s Plus? There’s no need.

8 is what should have been 7 a year ago. Ok. They missed the target, so this year release it as what it is: a normal yearly update and price it accordingly.

A premium price tag for the iPhone Pro makes as much sense as a premium price tag for the iPad Pro. And I’m ready to plop down more money for one.

That being said, I do wish however that Apple would also bring down the prices of the standard iPhone much like they did with the iPad, then relative to that, they could also bring the price of the iPhone Pro down a bit as well.

Like i think a $479 iPhone 7s with an iPhone Pro at $800 would be more attractive.

I don't think the phone will be THAT expensive.

In fact, I expect the following prices for the USA:

iPhone 7S 64 GB -- $649
iPhone 7S 128 GB -- $749
iPhone 7S 256 GB -- $849

iPhone 7S Plus 64 GB -- $749
iPhone 7S Plus 128 GB -- $849
iPhone 7S Plus 256 GB -- $949

iPhone 8 64 GB -- $899
iPhone 8 256 GB -- $999
iPhone 8 512 GB -- $1,099

If you don't have the money then don't buy it. Stop complaining and go buy the $800 phone that explodes or preorder the $650 phone from a startup less than a year old that might go out of business next week.

Apple knows what they are doing, their products are worth every penny.

I wish you were right, but sadly, you're $100 under for the iPhone 8 base model. I just need $899 plus a $350-400 trade in credit promo with my SE to be in the conversation about pre-ordering the iPhone 8. Sept 6 or 12th can't come soon enough to hear about promos and pricing. Will put an end to these rumors.

There just isn't enough OLED Panels in the world to make this happens. For years we got inferior hardware because they had to produce 200m+ new iPhones every year. Setting the price high enough to split the demand is the only way to have the best iPhone possible while also selling enough units. It's unfortunate, but this is the solution it seems.

Didn't Apple skip the 32gb variant for some of the black models of the iPhone 7?

If the iPhone 8 will be in constrained supply as rumoured, what are the odds that Apple will skip the 64 gb model and just sell the 256 gb and 512 gb versions?

The end result would be a phone that while expensive, also offers value for what you pay for it.

I can't see Apple matching pounds for dollars. They haven't done that with the current models
The current models were probably already priced before Brexit. Even though the phones weren't released until September, I don't think anyone assumed the pound would remain at parity with the dollar for much longer.
