You were paying the same amount (or more) then, it was just sprinkled over your bill for your 2 year contract.
Since I can't quote all 10 of you who said the same thing, I'll just respond to this one. As someone still grandfathered into an unlimited data plan, I most certainly am not paying the same as I was with subsidized pricing. I'm now paying subsidized plan pricing AND phone financing charges. If you think eliminating phone subsidies was some generous attempt by ATT and Verizon to "simplify" your bill or save you money, you have a false impression of said companies and American capitalism in general.

Didn't Apple skip the 32gb variant for some of the black models of the iPhone 7?

If the iPhone 8 will be in constrained supply as rumoured, what are the odds that Apple will skip the 64 gb model and just sell the 256 gb and 512 gb versions?

The end result would be a phone that while expensive, also offers value for what you pay for it.

They can make it 256 starting as long as the price is $899, I am fine with them skipping 64gb. I just need a price within my budget after a promo, that's all. I can survive on 64gb, 256gb, or 512gb, no matter either of the three.

Multiple rumors have suggested the upcoming "iPhone 8" could be the most expensive that Apple has ever released, with several analysts calling it a "premium" device costing upwards of $1,000.

That's funny. Apple fans defend the pricing of the current iPhone saying that it's a "premium device". If the iPhone 8 is the "premium" phone, what does that make the 7S?

It's still premium because you have to look what the 7S/7S+ offer: A11 processor, high end cameras, aluminum build, dual speakers, water resistance, 3D Touch, etc.

Apple priced it to be a flagship caliber competitor against LG, Samsung, HTC, etc.

Most people use their phones more than their Mac that cost over $1k or their expensive 4K or OLED tv. So why should a cellphone that you use so often in so many different ways be cheap?

THANK.YOU!

in this day and age, you can get a great, great Motorola G for less than $200, and it has specs that are comparable to iPhone.

Just like everything else, iPhone prices have to come down, not up. Apple seemed to finally get it with SE, so I hope the new phone isn't $1000

Because your laptop serves you 3 - 5 years, more with mac, your phone may or may not make the 2 year mark , 3 max

What in the world? The 7S you're describing is basically a 7. Why would anyone buy a 7S if it's just like you describe? They'd get a deeply discounted 7 instead.

Step back and look at what Apple is trying to pull here. If the rumors pan out, then this "premium" phone is what we should have been getting all along as the regular yearly update.

The user is not describing the 7... the 7s will indeed have A11, a better camera (obviously) and able to inductive charge.

If you are referring to the 7s won’t be a huge change compared to the 7... then your right about that. But as John Gruber noted in a blog post... this “premium” phone has to scale at an outrageous amount.

At first I thought it was some silly way to justify a $999 phone, but I kind of understand the reasoning behind it. This “premium” phone will sell like crazy.. I’m sure it’ll be months delayed for awhile.

Get rid of the "Build Your Own iPhone" system, and just have a cookie cutter iPhone. I think that would give it the premium feel Apple is looking for.
So you consider "off the rack" clothes to have a more "premium feel" than "made to measure" individually tailored clothes?

Sure. But if it's OLED + inductive or wireless charging + optical zoom + AR, a true new flagship phone, then it might be worth the upcharge.
There's no way Apple can limit their AR strategy to this "iPhone 8" model only; it would be suicide. Imagine:

Apple - "Yes our developers are working away on some cool new stuff, but you will need our expensive flagship device"
Public - "Ermm, I just spent $650-950 on a 7s/7s+, will that do?"
Apple - "You're so cute, no"

Apple chose to show off AR Kit with an iPad Pro so this iPhone 8 can't have anything, with regards to AR, that an iPad Pro doesn't or they would have held off and demoed it with an iPhone 8. I'd say the current iPhone 7 series will be the minimum requirement for future AR development.

Apple needs AR in the hands of many to succeed; it will not be limited to an iPhone 8.

I'm sure it will sell, but personally I'm not willed to drop a grand on a phone that can't do much more than my current one (iPhone 6) which is still running strong. It's small increments these days with smartphones and nothing really exciting.
If all the rumors turn out to be correct about the upcoming OLED iPhone, just facial recognition all by itself will dazzle with speed, ease and reliability leaving TouchID in the dust. Then there's reportedly wireless charging and OIS for both lenses in addition to the edge-to-edge display, the A11 chip and perhaps faster graphics.

My only hesitation is that (subjectively) pukey 'Blush Gold' color, but it may look much better in front of you than what has been shown on rumor sites thus far. Hopefully the jet-black will still be available.

So the minimum storage options currently for each phone work out like this price-wise:

iPhone SE (32GB) = £379
iPhone 6S (32GB) = £499
iPhone 7 (32GB) = £599
iPhone 7 Plus (32GB) = £719

Therefore my guess is the new line-up will be like this:

iPhone SE (64GB) = £399
iPhone 7 (64GB) = £529
iPhone 7S (64GB) = £629
iPhone 7S Plus (64GB) = £749
iPhone 8 (128GB) = £999

No that won't happen because it will bump up the cost of the higher storage models too much for the market. You could end up. Potentially, with a 7S 256GB for over £800 and the 8 starting at £1000.

So that will be like 1.089 Euro lol jeeze

I hope it flops (it wont). But they need to be brought down to earth a little bit at some point soon

I'm not surprised if the base model isn't even more expensive than that, and the top one will be closer to 1500e. At least in this backwater. It'll only mean I'll probably finally have to jump ship. My 6+ is way too slow these days for anything and I am not prepared to pay 1200+ for a phone. 64GB storage is a joke.

There are many people entrenched in the Apple eco system. Jobs had it right all those years ago with his strategy.

What I do find with Apple products in general they tend to last longer in terms of real world usage even years later, unlike other brands.

In terms of OS I find Android and others horrible to use. Apple will offer a tiered approach to iPhones like now as not everyone needs the latest tech just to use social media apps lol.

At launch, the sky's the limit. Remember the scalpers who were clogging up stores and snappping up all the new phones? Then selling them for double, sometimes offshore? Apple wants that money for itself. (Frankly, I don't blame them)

After a month or two - once the silly money's been mopped up - Apple will give other retailers permission to start running discounts and deals. The smart money will wait until then.

The smart money would wait until the 8s comes out and get the 8 even cheaper. No one wants last generation phones though. We have to have the best of the best as our status symbols.

Apple is leaking the prices, so that when cook says the entry level starts at $950 everyone will applaud.

;)
He'll have to do a little better than that to get applause, given with tax, the price is still going north of $1000. If he says starting price of $849 for 64GB, that would be something to applaud (softly of course).
[doublepost=1503736304][/doublepost]
Thats exactly why Apple are pricing it that high. With subsidised phone plans they can get away with it.
What subsidized phone plans? For most of us, they only remain in our memories and frankly, I think that's a good thing.

They're both premium, one is like a Series 7 BMW and the other is like Series 5. See didn't take much to respond to your snark hey.

Prices in the EU if the $999 for 64Gb rumor is true:

64Gb - €1189 ($1414)
256Gb - €1299 ($1533)
512Gb - €1409 ($1663)

YOU AMERICANS SHOUDL STOP COMPLAINING IMMEDIATELY!

Even if the salaries are higher in the EU, these prices are still immoral to ask here!

lol salaries in EU are lower than the US. Tax tax tax :) And thank your government for 21% VAT (or similar or even higher in Scandinavia)

I'd like to upgrade if only for the latest camera and smaller size phone (with bigger screen), but I can't see myself paying that much for a phone. It's not that I can't but rather that I don't want to, especially if Touch ID is gone (even if this rumored facial business is better). I really like Touch ID a lot.

Looking forward to seeing the big announcement but if the price rumors are true, I'll keep running my 6S until it dies.
