I think Apple should offer the highest end option they can realistically produce. As long as they have less expensive options that are still great- which it looks like we are getting as well.

These prices man. It doesn't even make sense. Like, at all. $1000 for a bloody smartphone, come on.

At what point do phones become too expensive?

I thought about it and, considering how much phones can do at such a convenient size - and are probably the most used device in our day to day lives, is it really that crazy to pay £1,000 for it. We were willing to pay and still are willing to pay thousands for many other things which aren't even fractionally as useful as a phone (be it a TV, sound systems, clothes and bags etc).

How I miss the days of subsidized iPhones starting at $199.

I get into arguments with ppl over that. I miss those days to. My bill isn't much different than when you just signed a two year contract, and paid $200 for a subsidized phone. Now my phone bill is almost the same as b4. Plus I give Apple $45 per month for the privilege of trading my phone in every year.

Why doesn't apple lower prices in Euro now? They increased prices over here because of the "weak Euro"... so, now we have a very strong Euro again - apple your move now.
The € tends to be an inherently volatile currency owing to the large number of widely varied economies that use it, that'll make Apple more cautious in adjusting prices, lest there be a big movement just after it does. The £, for example, by contrast has traditionally been a very inert currency, taking big global-level events (2008 crash, Brexit) to shift it significantly. Other than that it tends to track in a predictable direction for long periods of time. That's why Apple will often seemingly be more generous with UK prices than continental ones, it's a safer bet there won't be any unseen big shifts in the value.

I guess that's not horrible I paid $969 for the 7+ 256gb without batting an eye, I would gladly pay $130 more for an OLED screen and no bezels. I do agree that phone prices are getting pretty ridiculous but the way I see it, I use my phone for everything these days... I commute to work so I use my phone for music, movies, tv shows, reading books, web browsing, social media, my calendar, notes, reminders, alarm clock, messaging, phone calls, emails... the list goes on and on so I guess I don't really mind paying the crazy prices for now.... As long as it doesn't get too out of hand.

It takes a lot of courage for Apple to price the iPhone 8 like this...

Yes and no. They can get away with it because a lot of their customers are filthy rich. Enough that they'd sell out even if us middleclassers buy none.

I don't begrudge Apple charging whatever they like for their devices. I buy things based on my need of them. I use my phone but don't live on it as my son does. I would like a new iPad Pro to replace my Air 2, since I use the iPad extensively, waiting before upgrading a 64GB 6S + that works makes sense to me.

I remember last year when so many were saying that they were going to skip the iPhone 7 (6SS) and wait for the SUPER CYCLE this year with all the great features.

Now some of those same people are up in arms over the supposed price increase. Thought Apple was going to price their "super" upgrade the same as their "minor" one?

It's been such a roller coaster of emotions here. Great entertainment!

The one Apple device attainable for everyone will suddenly become attainable to a few.

Hmm. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

THIS is why I'll never be locked into ANY ecosystem. I need to be able to leave when I want to.

It's kind of funny hearing you guys complaining about a $1000 iPhone.. Here in Australia we've been buying $1000 iPhones for years.. Expecting this new one to be hitting $1700. Seriously!

Only... there will still be a 7s/ 7s+ based on the exact same chipset, same ram (for the +), possibly even same camera set-up, and for the same price as always. I wouldn't be surprised to see the range simplified back to an 8/8+ next year, taking on the design of the 'edition' for the price of the mainstream phones, either.

I suspect many will hold phones longer, perhaps going with a three yr upgrade cycle as opposed to every two years. I waited to buy my 6S + & will probably wait to upgrade to either a 7+ or next year to get the 8.

What is nice is that we have options, to buy what we need & prioritize our Apple purchases

That price doesn't surprise me to be honest. Based on those prices, I am expecting UK prices to start at £799 for the 64gb, £899 for 256gb and £1020 for 512mb.
I guess I will go for the 512mb as I have budgeted for £1100

That's very optimistic to be honest (as much as i hope you are correct)

Currently there is only a difference of 50 between them so i would imagine rip off Britain will prove its name yet again.

I would say £949 for 64gb, £1049 for 256gb and £1149 for 512gb. But like i said, the "cheaper" the better.

I've owned every 'whole' number iphone since 2010, and I've bought into the Apple ecosystem.

With that said, I held onto my iPhone 6 because the 6S and the 7 weren't much more than iterative upgrades; my 6 still works fine (since beta version of iOS 11, 2nd public build, no less). As much as I like the iPhone, there's no way in hell I'm paying $1K for an iPhone.

They're just following Samsung's lead. The new Galaxy S8 Note starts at $929.

I've said this before, and I think the article is probably wrong: The 512GB model will start at $1299 not $1199. Apple does the same thing with the new iPad Pro pricing. The first two are $100 apart and the 512GB is $200 more than the 256GB. That is, if they even make the 512GB. They might add it in the spring like they did with the red color this year to get a little sales bump.

If one is struggling to justify dropping £/$/€ 1,000 on a yearly 'treat' like an iPhone can you really be middle class? I'd argue to be middle class you need to have that sort of cash available to drop on whatever you like, within reason. Less than that would be working class.

It will easily be worth it. Computers used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, this is better and fits in your pocket. A super computer in your pocket for less than $1000! They would have dreamed about that 30 years ago.

And hopefully an updated SE as well.
