They are going to have to rename Apple Pay to Apple Selfie Pay :p.

Don't tell me I have to look at myself every time I want to unlock my phone! Maybe it's good for the conceited types.

A June/July release of the iPhone 8 would probably mean good availability by September/October. A lot of people upgraded to the iPhone 7 and many of them won't be able to upgrade due to financial constraints so a little bit of relief there, hopefully.

Sounds like a controlled leak. Probably Tim was unable to embed Touch ID under the screen, so for the time being it's removed in the super cool OLED model. Maybe in 2018 they'll figure out how to add it back. He'll say of course that this is amazing and face scanning is the future and also something about thinness and clogged piplelines, etc etc.

No way touchID goes away, as with your face as the only security you cannot stop a policeman or agent from opening your phone. Force your face over the device and boom your whole life is lost. At least with fingerprints you have 10 to choose from. You only have one face.

replacing touchID? No. In addition? Maybe.
(possibly a stupid question: how would it work in extremely low light conditions/darkness ?)
Surface pro 4 has some kind of infrared camera that can recognize you in compete darkness. Still Touch ID feels much convenient in a phone that facial recognition. But we will see. I don't think it will happen seeing how polished is Touch ID now.

You don't think Apple would release a half a$$ed version? How about maps, notifications, widgets or Apple Music .....to name a few

Kinda hard to compare old technology that MS or Samsung used to what Apple might introduce! I don't think Apple would release a half a$$ed version. Sounds fishy that they are just going to drop the TouchID as well. All rumors!

Looking forward to it, more curious to see what developers use the laser capabilities for (laser stud finder).

What wavelength do we think this laser is going to be? Also... what wavelength would penetrate drywall but not wood? I'd think that any wavelength penetrating one would penetrate both... I thought stud finders normally use sound waves?

Which now makes me wonder... can the iPhone be used as a stud finder? It has a speaker and a mic... can I do other ultrasonic detection things with it too?

Edit: It looks like at least one sonar ruler app already exists, from 8 years ago. So maybe it works?

But as far as stud detectors go, I don't think any stud detectors use radars (or sonar like I had thought.) Wikipedia says that old ones used magnetics (actually searching for screws and nails that are presumably in the stud) while newer ones use dielectric constants (not sure what those are, but I don't think there's any API that would expose that to an iPhone app...)

If it uses lasers as said in the article, it would provide its own light source. Otherwise, it might work as well as TouchID when it rains or more generally when the phone or the finger is wet (not to speak of gloves).

As someone who wears a mask in a hospital all day, I really hope this technology either A) somehow works regardless of the mask, maybe scanning the eyes or B) doesn't actually REPLACE Touch ID but rather comes alongside of it.
How well does TouchID work with gloves?

This technology has existed for over a year with Intel's Realsense and Windows Hello.

It uses a IR camera for lowlight conditions and it's very reliable. There was a test done of twins trying to unlock windows 10 hello computers with no luck.

Perhaps Apple will do it really, really well, but I suspect this will be rubbish when you open the phone when it's just in the corner of your eye, for a bland, and it's view of your face is at a weird angle and only includes the top of your head.

If they can't burry Touch ID under the screen, I predict moving it to the back.

Its far too soon to completely ditch touchID and only leave us with ancient passcode and face recognition. Talk about not working. Apple isn't the type to adopt this tech this early. Also doubt they are even removing the home button after they just made it taptic

They made the Home button solid-state so that they could remove it.

First the NSA have our fingerprints which I don't care now they wanna grow their facial recognition system  #illumanti #****nsa

I know these questions won't apply to most users who don't plan to hold on to their phones for more than a year or two, but how does facial recognition allow for natural or more sudden changes in facial features? Can the phone's 3D scanner technology be reset in some way to remember new or different features of the user's/owner's face, or is the facial recognition based on broader profiles of the user's/owner's face?

No doubt this information will become clearer with more details about the technology, (if Apple are planning to adopt it in the new phones), as it is of course too obvious a consideration to be overlooked.

Will this work for people who switch between glasses and contacts? And it might work if your hands are wet—but what if your face is wet? Hah.

Hopefully we can register multiple people. My wife has a thumbprint registered on mine, and mine on hers. And my grandparents share an iPhone.

Hopefully this feature comes to the iPad also and doesn't take too long. It better be fast too. TouchID is so freaking fast right now.

I hope it doesn't say "Take off your sunglasses, scarf, hat, and shave your beard to verify!"

Touch-ID is too convenient to go away. If anything, facial recognition should complement it, not replace it.

That is my fear. It just works so darn well.
But on the other hand, Apple knows this as well. So whatever replaces it will be good. But if the tradeoff is a little inconvenience for a little more screen space, I'm not up for that. I don't need a bigger screen on my phone. So this better be a functionality improvement, not just a way to get a bigger screen into the mid sized phone.

I always use passcode.
Fingers and eye recognition can be forced by a court but typing a password is under the 5th.
