Of course nobody knows, but it’s certainly worthy discussing. Apple has made mistakes in the past and will certainly make mistakes in the future, so while I don’t think I’m more clever I also don’t think they’re perfect.

As for the last part, care to cite a source? Identical twins are formed from the same cell and contain identical DNA. As time goes on they tend to age and be affected by their environments differently, but they are typically born precisely the same. Surely there are sets of “identical” twins with subtly different faces, but the vast majority are physically indistinguishable.
Asymetri, no face is symmetrical.
If you compare both halfs of your face they will be different.

If you study the face of one identical twin, his face is going to be asymmetrical just like yours.

If you compare the face of both identical twins, their individual asymmetry translates into interindividual asymmetry.
They are not an exact copy of each other, as we aren’t even an exact copy of the other half of our own bodies.

Therefor the date points will change between indentical twins.

On top of this epigenetic and external ambient factors contribute to even more defined difference.

Don’t worry about that, if you are not to old you will still live to the day when selfdriving cars are the only legal option.

Probably driving is the riskest activity that normal people do.

So, when autonomous vehicles are statistically safer than a person, nany state will get sure you won’t hurt yourself or the ones that surround you.

Pessimisticaly, I would give 7 years for the technology to get to that point (which already is but has to be tested for a lot more time)
10 years on top of that for autonomous cars to be prevalent on big city’s.

After that is just a question of when...but it would be the next logical step for a nany state.

I think you're about right. In 10 years we should have a lot of cars at level 3 autonomy, occasionally at level 4, and level 5 still in testing.

They should just announce the new iPhones on twitter or something.

Every detail has seemingly been leaked. Pretty embarrassing for them, IMO.

Infrared I believe.
My nearly 2-yr old Lumia 950XL works great with the iris scanner. Pitch dark, hell even with sunglasses.

Pretty neat, welcome!

As soon as they turn the phone around to use the phone, it will lock because it detects the correct user is no longer using it.
What if I WANT someone to look at my phone. I have to stand behind them so FaceID detects my face?

Can it recognize faces in the early nausea phase? I hope so because I know that's how I'd look if I owned one of those brown...er Old World Copper...iPhones. I really hope that is just a bad picture or a fake.
I hope it missed some steps. It just seems odd to me...the edge/back/camera outline are copper (And two tones at that), the camera face is black, the screen is black, and the tiny bezel is white.

Why not make the front bezel copper as well? Save a few cents on a potentially $1k+ phone?

I wonder of the legal implications of this. Don't want to unlock your phone? No problem, we will just put your face in front of it.

That's actually a Copper colored iPhone I believe. I'm not confident "Poop Brown" would be used in Apple's marketing terminology for an iPhone and it might be off putting for the consumer.

I don't mind what Apple will "Lable" it, but i like the color and i will buy it on Spot. I am getting little bit bored from "Rose Gold" and "Gold" color that i have in my Lineup :-(

I have planned to Get two iPhone's this year :- iPhone 7S [Black] and iPhone 8 [Copper Gold]

I know that people have raised concerns about it being fooled by pictures, which I'm sure Apple is clever enough avoid, but I guess anyone with an identical twin will have to be cool with their sibling being able to access their phone. Fingerprints at least are unique for every single person. Not even twins have the same.

I predict the launch of Face ID will be a dumpster fire that rivals the launch of Apple Maps.

I agree. Everyone here seems to think this is something Apple has been perfecting for years and planned to release in Sept as some brilliant innovation. The truth is Touch ID failed and now they are scrambling to do something. No way this is ready for prime time.

BTW I can't wait for my gf to unlock my phone while I'm sleeping :((((

I do not believe that this Face ID will work. This will be other Apple debacle like Apple Maps, the earliest versions of iCloud and the current Mac Pro lack of updates mess. Apple is actually not that impressive anymore under Tim Cook's regime.

Jeez, I've been married twenty years and know my husband's passcode and have one of my prints registered on his phone and iPad and S8+ and I still wouldn't unlock his tech without permission first. Wouldn't have when we were dating, either, if cell phones had existed back then. People in relationships are entitled to their privacy. I couldn't stay in a relationship with a habitual snoop.

Maybe not, but I still like everything else that's been leaked about the phone so far. I'll just use my passcode if Face ID ends up being a pain or a dud.

Facial recognition means the cameras can authenticate the user's face far more frequently than Touch ID can. And it can do so without interruption.

Sudden movement detected by motion co-processor? Authenticate.

Launch app or data access? Authenticate.

Inactivity timeout? Authenticate.

So you won't be able to unlock your phone and hand it to a friend?

Hang on a minute... That colour. I know where It has been debuted before.

... The ZUNE!

Get tested for color blindness. Doodoo brown is not nearly the same color as shiny copper.

Now that I never thought about, but doesn't that mean this thing will be scanning for a face when ever the phone is on, eating away at battery I'm sure of.

If Apple does introduce this bronze or copper gold color, Rose Gold would be phased out in all likliness. At this point, I plan on preordering, but No matter what color they offer in both models, it's going to be very limited at launch. It's likely going to be the OLED for me. Or maybe both the 7s and OLED model I will order on preorder day.

So are they going to remove the huge bezel by replacing it with a thick frame? This dummy looks like it is one of those survival cases

I suppose identical twins will have to try it out and see. Maybe the iPhone will be able to tell them apart. Maybe it won't.

Doesn't matter to me, since I don't have an identical twin. People who have prosthetic hands likely have trouble using Touch ID. Since I do have hands, I am able to use it most of the time, though if my hands are wet it doesn't work AT ALL and I have to revert to entering my passcode. With ALL ITS MONEY, Apple couldn't make TouchID work with wet hands! Obviously TouchID was not ready for prime time.

it seems weird that they would put the whole iOS firmware into the homepod... makes the firmware much bigger for nothing.

Reliability in poor light conditions?! Good question! Apple won't just using IR iris data. They enhance the system with 3D-topo. And IR topo technique (working in such conditions) would be rather new stuff! We remember: Iris Scan in Samsung S8 has shown to be absurd nonsense:

Imagine you record your face and afterwards pop that zit. Phone won't recognize you without it.

Think about it........
Recognize this: you get into fist fight with bruises...the phone won't recognize you and will automatically dial 911 or the local police department due to theft.

All facial recognition software uses calculations between your eyes, nose and mouth.
