So, it’s confirmed. This is the new iPhone design! Not that exciting :(

So we have seen a lot of fakes, ideas and conceptual models derived from the mystic rumors area. We are currently on a model with thick bezels, physical buttons, and limited effective screen size. Now a picture shows up out of genuine Apple software, showing a sexy model with very narrow bezels, no buttons and a tiny space to hold sensors and other stuff, and you say.... it is not exiting? That sounds very strange to me, bring it on!

Quite a few complaints about this as-yet-not-fully-known facial recognition procedure.

First - it uses IR so will work in the dark. For those who don't know what infrared is, it's the way most remote controls work.

Second - saying it's not as good as a fingerprint reader because there's code in the firmware for "too near" and "too far". Of course, touch-id works brilliantly even if I hold my finger a few cm away from the reader or at the wrong angle or .....

Third - it'll work when my fingers/thumb are wet, dirty or I'm wearing gloves. Finally.

Fourth - "Why should I have to look at my phone to unlock it!". I can't find a reason to unlock a phone if you're not gonna look at it. Should only need a quick glance anyway.

I do have concerns around sunglasses, hats, picking up someone's phone and pointing it at them etc. I'm very curious and excited to see the tech in action.

How are you going to pay using Apple Pay with no Touch ID? Are you going to have to open your phone and open it up then scan your face then load the card? That sounds like a big step back in regards to ease of payments.

Especially when Apple makes money off of every Apple Pay transaction. With every release Apple seems to take features away. Headphone Jack, now Touch ID, what is next? The Camera?

I use Siri all the time without looking at the screen. I have disabled Siri on the lock screen, something everyone who is concerned with the security of their data should do, so I need to unlock the phone first, and then holding the home button for Siri to kick in. This I can do in my pocket, without taking out the device. That is just one example. Im sure there are a lot of other examples as well...

I use Windows Hello in the dark all the time, works instantly and extremely accurate.
It really varies a lot on skin tone. If you're white as are a lot of developers, it works pretty well most of the time. If you have a medium to dark skin tone and are in low light conditions, facial recognition kinda sucks.

I'm a medium skin tone so I'm not ever bothering with facial recognition. Plus, facial recognition isn't all that secure. I'd rather put in a password to login than use biometrics. Plus, legally you can be compelled to stand in front of a camera or give a fingerprint. But people forget passwords all the time.

I don't do anything illegal or remotely close to illegal, but I'll be damned if my computer will be used against me in a courtroom.

You should look into how Windows Hello works. I don’t think skin tone matters to infrared. Plus it’s more secure than what I think most people believe :)

Either way, I’d prefer to have the option of having Touch ID.

The news here is that apparently Apple's camera's will be able to take infra-red images, which could be useful in applications other than face recognition (infra-red photography would be cool, as would being able to take temperature measurements at a distance).

As for using face recognition to unlock the phone, I think this is a monumentally stupid idea. I wear glasses sometimes (which will distort the hell out of the image as my lenses practically bend light around my head) and contact other times, and I can imagine that being an issue. Also, there are various times when the shape of a face changes, from different emotional expressions to swelling from infections and insect bites, not to mention 5 o'clock shadow in men and cosmetics in women (and maybe some men as well). I just can't see this being practical. If humans often mistake the identify of faces, a mobile phone will be magnitudes worse.

Apple Pay doesn't require Touch ID to work. Passcode works

A lot of people are complaining about facial recognition based on what today's phones have.

While all valid concerns, I think Apple has thought all of this through *very* thoroughly and will come up with a solution. I highly, HIGHLY doubt Apple will implement a security measure that potentially replaces TouchID, and doesn't address unlocking in the dark or hat/glasses wearers.

This could potentially be better than TouchID if implemented right. No problems with wet fingers etc.

And instead gain problems with (sun)glasses, piercings, etc?

If you have wet fingers, you won’t be able to use the phone at all (try it - detection is all over the place).

If Apple blew up the screen but lost TouchID, that would be an unacceptable design compromise for me. I’ve been looking forward to this revision for years, but I’m not going to buy a product which makes unacceptable trade-offs. I’d rather have a normal screen and keep TouchID.

Maybe they did incorporate Touch ID but it doesn't work as well as Apple liked? So they added another security option.

I just can't wrap my head around no Touch ID for future iPhones

That is one of the best mockups I've seen!
Would love to se an iPhone 8 Edition, in white ceramics, just as the AppleWatch...

Using two different kind of biometrics would be great, I hope you nailed it, but Im afraid we are not getting any TouchID anymore.. :(

I wonder how far away it works. When someone needs to open my phone I’ll just quickly put my finger on the Home button. Especially if I don’t want them to know my password or I’m being lazy.

No it does not however I usually never upgrade my iPhone on "s" years. I will make an exception this year. Love the new design. I doubt it will be called the iPhone 8.
This isn't an s year in terms of the premium iPhone. It's in fact the biggest upgrade to an iPhone in iPhone history.

I hope all the listed BK code in this firmware is not state information in which facial recognition wont work? Although, there does appear to be set commands for most of the listed circumstances. What do the set commands in the code do?
