I hope the aspect ratio is NOT 18.5:9 or something ridiculous like that. Just stick to 16:9.

It seems like Apple is going to split the screen into two sections. Apps will have access to a 5.1" 16:9 upper portion of the screen that will work pretty much the same way the existing LCD screen does now. The lower 1/2" or so will replace the home button and will be reserved for Apple's system to use for contextual buttons.

I don't think apps will have any direct access to the lower on-screen buttons. Apple is going to ensure at a minimum that area always has the equivalent of a "Home" button and probably a touch ID available at all times. I think the lower buttons will only display Apple system functions and no custom app code will be allowed to run in that sandboxed space.

Apple has never done an "anniversary" edition of any product, the press need to stop calling the iPhone 8 that. It's just iPhone 8, nothing limited or special about it, just the next iPhone design that will be used for 3-4 years
They did a 20th anniversary mac.

I recall the same news this time last year for the iPhone 7. If you don't pre-order at 12am PT/3am ET...yeah, expect your iPhone to ship in 2, 4, 8 weeks! I suspect if you don't pre order on Pre-Order date this year, you may not see that new phone until mid December at the earliest.

I'm still on the 6 Plus..I plan to finally upgrade this time...I ONLY hope the Apple Store App, Apple Website can upgrade their servers (whatever it is they do) to handle the traffic. I tried adding the iPhone 7 Plus back in Sept. - just to see if I could - and I had problems. Next thing I know the Phone has a delivery date of mid November..I know many shipped before the estimated delivery date though. I can image how initially deflating it must have felt for many.

The demand for this model will be extremely massive.

I would agree with you about the demand for this iPhone will be incredible. But more so beside the demand, is the tension and the hype that's building up behind this launch. It's like creating A snowball effect that ends up getting bigger and bigger every week as we get closer, even though it's five months out.

Based on that iPhone concept with Twitter, I can see that the iPhone Twitter edition is coming soon. Explains Apple's obsession with advertising twitter in all advertisements lately....

Please no more "Anniversary iPhone" posts. When the original iPhone was introduced at Macworld Expo January 9th 2007, and the rumours from 3 days ago say the iPhone 8 may not ship until November, how on earth can it be an anniversary iPhone? If it indeed ships in November (I doubt it) it will be 3/4 closer to an 11 year iPhone. Anniversaries mean nothing to Apple.
There's some irony in your first line, however this year's iPhone(s) will already be the 11th (and 12th) iPhone iterations (not even counting the 5C and SE), so even though this past January the iPhone's introduction was 10 years ago, this upcoming new crop of phones arguably aren't really 10th year editions. That would have been in 2016.

Frankly, I don't even get why they bother with the rumored 7S and 7S+, or even an updated SE for 4" hold-outs for that matter. Why not just concentrate on the new flagship OLED model, and keep the existing 7, 7+ and SE as second tier? What was that word again, oh yes fragmentation.

I really would not be shocked if they released a "Special Retro 10th Anniversary Edition."

And people would buy it. Same look as the original June 2007 model - Black antenna would just be painted to match the old style. Better display..maybe a 64gb OR 128gb size? - Obviously not a 4gb :) Better camera and more powerful.

No, it's not innovation, many might hate the idea. Many may love to have the tiny original or just to feel nostalgic?
It's just a limited edition phone on top of the NEW iPhones 8/8 Plus.

I believe the render at the top of this article is 99.99% what it will look like. But I also think that part of the screen where touch ID lives will be more of a function area ala MBP touch bar than an actual extension of the screen. My $0.02

What happens to that function area when you are watching movies or playing games?

Even today, buttons for Phone, Safari, Mail, Music etc disappears when you start watching youtube...

I hate to compare..but it's the only comparison I have. I played with the Samsung S8 at Best Buy, the tiny home screen icon on the actual screen disappears - when accessing videos, apps, etc. Press the screen to have the icon re-appear. (Maybe add a possible option in iPhone settings could be added "Press screen for 1, 3, 5 seconds to show Home Button?" Might be a nice option to avoid annoyances)

So I suspect that would be the same for the iPhone home button on the new phones.

... while challenges exist in integrating the 3D sensing front camera system.

No front camera bump. Please.

I expect the lower "touch bar" area of the screen to one with the main OLED screen. I can't imagine that Apple would try using a different technology for the "touch bar", even if it's laminated to the same front glass sheet as the main OLED screen.

And I can't believe that Jony Ive would let an iPhone out the door with a bezel on the bottom of the screen that serves no purpose. In the OP rendering, the bottom bezel is just a blank space below the "touch bar". Every square mm of space on the front of a mobile device is precious.

I doubt Jony would waste even a small amount of screen real estate like that, unless there is a technological reason for Apple to do it. For example, the second front-facing camera for 3D face detection. To get maximum depth perception, the 3D cameras should be as far apart as possible. (The obvious problem being that users might cover up that lower camera while unlocking their iPhone.)

But whatever. Just take my money, Apple. I want my iPhone "Edition". (Even if it's all-white. :-( )

They did a 20th anniversary mac.

That was under Gil Amelio, during Apple's rapid descent into insolvency. The first thing Jobs did when he took over was kill it, as he despised nostalgia. Shortly thereafter he discovered Apple's in-house archives, and promptly had it all donated and shipped off to Stanford. Steve Jobs didn't do anniversaries. Indeed he was never there long enough to hit a significant one. Though after his return, under his tenure, no Apple anniversary was ever commemorated with a product. Cook and Ive are much more direct descendants of Jobs philosophies, and it's hard to imagine they would intentionally change that fundamental philosophy without a compelling reason. Apple is a forward thinking company, and anniversaries celebrate the past, a past which was mired by many disastrous years. A 10th Anniversary iPhone, concurs up comparisons to a 20th Anniversary Mac, the only other rime Apple released such a product, which was a dismal failure. Hard to see them doing it.

this..exactly the model Johnny Ive's has been looking for - from there I don't expect many more exterior changes.

I'll not care WHEN it comes out as I getting one through AT&T's Next bidness but I wonder if the 92 million screens they ordered will cover this years release going into next year. I know demand will be super ultra mega combo high for this premium phabletics.

can anyone guess what volume are we talking about with this magical model? The AUP/AT&T Next, Upgrade every year folks will certainly upgrade (at most $ 5-7 more a month) - I am anxious to see how is this going to be sold by Phil Schiller - here are the ok '7s models' and here is the best iPhone ever "Iphone 8"

Brian whites accuracy rating is literally between 0 and 1. he's been wrong on everything from the Apple Television to The Apple Car to EPS estimates. Etc etc etc
DONT PUT ANY CREDABILITY INTO HIS RUMORS OR SOURCES

He's now working for a new brokerage firm as he brought SEC scrutiny to his last firm
Point made, Enough said!!!!

The first iPhone shipped in June of 2007, so if you're comparing apples to apples (pun intended), June - November is 5 months difference.
But also, 2007 to 2017 is 10 years apart lol.
