Wow two base storage bumps in as many years, iP7 went to 32GB base last year and now 64GB base. Apple shouldn't be so generous lol.

You don't have hardware acceleration needed to play it smoothly. Playback has nothing to do with storage space.

I know that, I didn't say it was anything to do with storage space. My point was, what good is h.265 saving you space when you can't play h.265 on the other devices you may own.

Well on my 128Gb 6s I have around 30Gb free so guess I'm going for the 256Gb version. Fine for me to be honest as it's not the top storage model like this one was so might not be too much more... I imagine with all the AR stuff we probably need a bit more room as well.

So now you can get a phone with 4 times the storage of the base model of their professional line of laptops...

Can't wait for this phone!!!!!!!!!! Those moaning should try out my iPhone 5...

Spec bump to come next year in terms of RAM - new bodies generally don't upgrade the internals - space jump is great!

You people seem to forget that the average person on MacRumors is not the average person. MOST people buy an iPhone and don't use it anywhere near to their full capabilities. Thus, 64GB is more than enough for the average person.

I agree with that statement 3 years ago. I use to be the person that could get away with an 8GB phone. Now, by default, all of your documents, photos, etc. are on all of your devices all of the time. The person with an ipad/iphone has easily doubled their storage compared to previous times where each device was separate. Plus videos take up a lot more space being 4K. Apple has really altered storage compared to a few years ago. Their version of the "cloud" is a lot different than dropbox, box, google drive, etc.

My habits have not really changed at all in that time frame, just the way Apple has decided to store documents and photos.

edit: oh, and I don't even store music/movies on any of my devices. That is all streamed.

512 would be awesome. I could hold all my music again.
Hmmmm good point. I was thinking 256 would be plenty. I'll probably still just go with 256 or even 64 since 512 would likely be waaaaay to expensive for my liking. Just sync my rated/loved music. :)

I just tried an h.265 4K video on my 2014 MBP 13" and it was stuttery as f@@K, so it's not the nirvana answer to everything... It's only good if everything you own supports it.

True. Thankfully, I have a laptop and TV that supports it. As for 256GB vs. 512GB, I think I'll get the 256GB, 64GB would definitely not be good enough after using 128GB for the almost two years on my 6s (about 25GB free space at the moment). If the 512GB model is only $100 more and has better availability than the 256GB, I may be tempted to get that capacity. It may be overkill, but since I'm paying a premium anyway...what's an additional $100?

Who needs ****in 256GB or even 512GB in a smartphone?
Even some of new MacBooks got less that that!
I still have more than enough with my iPhone SE 16GB.
Never needed more.

Those people who transfer ALL music to their iPhones are SICK.
Why dont you just stream? Use Apple Music, use amazon prime, soundcloud whatever!
I wonder why people still download instead of streaming.
And with the iCloud and other clouds, nobody needs to save all the stuff local on the phone.
Just backup in the cloud all of your ****in photos, videos, music whatever.

Most people like to take a lot of pictures and record high definition video.
Pictures and especially high definition video can eat up a lot of space really quick.

Combine those two factors with the fact that most people are not tech savvy enough to put in place a system to keep all those gigabytes of data stored somewhere else than their phones and now you suddenly know why people may need for such storage sizes inside a phone.

Oh and I know that you can use iCloud Photo Library to solve this issue, but the amount of data that needs to be transferred is not compatible with the speed of the internet connection of most people in the world (most people still have 8-20 Mbit/sec DSL with like 2 Mbit/sec upload speed).

Btw, why are you so pissed off about other people choices? Even if for a minority of users it came down to just having all their music stored locally, who are you to say it's not worth it to them? Why is it that just because you feel you "never needed more" than 16GB then it automatically means that nobody else in the world would need more?

People have different desires and needs. Surprise.

Cloud storage? When you're in the middle of nowhere? How long do you think it takes to upload 64GB of 4K video to the cloud at 1 bytes per second? A thousand years.

When your device is full it deletes older media from your phone, which is already stored in the cloud, thus freeing up space. What's the problem here?

Knew it when they came out with 512GB on the iPad it would follow on the iPhone. God knows how much that will be.

iPhone 6S: 16/64/128
iPhone 7: 32/128/256
iPhone 8: 64/256/512

Apple, I like what you are doin'

What is it you like? Increasing the base storage or increasing the base price?

Base price for an iPhone use to be $650 usd, then when the plus got released the base price went up to $770. Now it is rumored to start at $1000.

Yeah there is still the $650 model but that has been same design for 3 years now and features are being held back so they can go in the more expensive models. When features are held back, the "new base " model is the $1000 one.

This is a very confused bit of logic. A base model is by strict definition a basic iPhone set to a base price. If the rumors are true, a base model at a base price will be the iPhone 7S Plus and iPhone 7S. The iPhone 8, if rumors are true, will be the premium product in the iPhone lineup, and will be priced at a premium and feature premium specs.

If I was in the market, and I'm not until maybe the next version, I'd still get the minimum storage on the phone. I have my 51GB iPad Pro. The iPhone is for communications for work, at lest for me. I don't really care if I can't load every tv show, and movie onto it or record for hours and then edit it on the phone.

so tired of all these rumours and see that chi min kuo dude's name is everything

If you're so tired of rumors on a rumored website, why would you visit A rumored website and comment on it? Furthermore, Ming Kuo actually has a fairly positive track record with predictions months before anyone has any idea of what to expect with the iPhone 8. So his precedence is welcome by all means.
