What always impresses me about these rumors is how unrepresentative the people who reply are of the general market.

Agreed but I thinks it's also foolish of Apple to ignore the enthusiasts. Early adopters and tech enthusiasts are the one who everyone else comes to for advice on their personal tech purchases.

For example...I've spent more at Apple over the years than the next 5-10 average general consumers combined. I'm the reason why my wife and kids all use Apple gear. I'm also the reason why my mom, sister (and her family), sister-in-law (and her kids), aunt and uncle, and whole bunch of our friend and their families have iPhone, Macs, and Apple TVs. I get asked all the time about the latest 'whatever' and if it's worth buying.

So if Apple decides my tech needs aren't important anymore, they're not just losing my money but many of the purchases from my extended network when it comes time for them to replace their gear.

its a sad day when Apple news is about playing catch-up with Samsung...the only real question is
"Since Apple is hell bent on catching up with Samsung, will they include a Fire Extinguisher with the iPhone 8?"

Despite the seemingly constant negativity against a charging pad, I personally see (and have experienced) the benefits.

First and foremost a car dock is just lovely. Not having to plug it in each time is a definite plus.

Setting thenohone down in my desk or nightstand is also a bonus. Not need to worry about a cable. Obviously those wanting to use while plugged in will need to plug it in. Most of the time it's a quick pick up and place down. Muscle memory takes over. I've scruallynset my iPhone down onto my work desk charging pad by mistake.

I do agree that if thisnisnthebbest Apple could do, we should have seen this much much sooner. Perhaps we will get distance charging at a slower rate and a much faster charge in the pad? That remains to be seen.

You mean in the sense where they catch fire or them not selling well or earning profits from them?

If you mean wireless charging, people don't care for them now in its present sense. It's a clumsy gimmick that is not yet ready for prime time.
As of today, they're only useful if you place it on the mat before you go to bed and won't be using it.

But when it comes to uninformed opinions, fanboys can fill a landfill with them.

Reading all these rumors makes me wonder if Apple really wants my business. I want an updated 4" phone. It's easy to do but maybe not enough profit for them. But I won't buy a phablet or another 4.7" phone.

I think you'll get your wish next year!
I think after a "boring" upgrade last year, the focus (& rightly so, imo) is currently on the top-selling bigger screen phones.
However, SE was a runaway success. Not relative to the more popular large screen phones of course, but they carved an incredible niche! There are almost no premium phones on the planet of that size. They are peerless in that aspect.
Now the 2018 SE refresh may squeeze a 4.3" or 4.5" screen into that same size, but I think the basic proportions will be extremely similar.
An SE next year w/ 3D Touch & an edge to edge screen would sell briskly, for certain!

The point is that the charging port is less likely to break and there is no cable sticking out in front of the device.

Huh? So they care about cables not sticking out, but have no problem having us connect dongles?

Make no mistake, this, like everything else with Apple, is about money. Wireless charging is a headline that can sway people to upgrade, and they'll be a ton of money in charging pads.

If they truly cared about cables not sticking out or breaking, they'd have usb-c across the board.
[doublepost=1486863871][/doublepost]so they rip the band-aid off on the MacBook, then lag behind the industry standard with iPhone?

I guess I'll just continue pairing my MBP with Android. Sadly it's more compatible.

Sorry, Apple is being cheap by not including proper cables.

1. Not everyone wants to use the included Airbuds. I use them sometimes (i.e., when walking outside), and my Bose noise cancelling at other times. Even Beats doesn't have many lightning connected models, right?
2. No Lightning-to-USB-C is even stupider. If they're trying to adapt a new standard, great, then just do it. Putting out a state of the art new phone model that doesn't have a cable to connect to your latest laptops is just plain dumb. Unless they want everyone to update wirelessly. And its just too early for that now.

Apple's greatest strength in my view is how seamlessly iOS and macOS integrate. If you use Macs then an iPhone is a no-brainer. Yet now Apple's iPhone doesn't plug in to their laptops without an overpriced adapter cable.

From "Insanely Great" to "Insane" since Jobs's death.

They should just create a small insert that contains the computer. Then offer three different display modules: phone, iPad, laptop which you can plug in the compute module. That way you're only paying for a single compute module. If you plug it into the phone module, then it runs iOS, if you then pull it out and plug it into a laptop, then it uses OSX. That's innovation.

94% of iPhone users have no use for the USB C to Lightening adapter. So big woop on that.

Wireless charging is gimmicky and Apple is well aware of that. So if they're doing it it's probably pretty fast, ives designed a cool pad, auto manufacturers are adapting it, and maybe they're planning to one day make a phone with zero ports.

I can already sense iPhone 8, Apple's turn for exploding iPhones, or battery issue due to device heating up for wireless charging despite this "sheet lamination" for protection, which i hope Apple does right for their sake as a whole.

Given that Apple's wireless AirPods and BeatsX earphones are now available, perhaps it feels including the Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter in the box is no longer necessary.
Until Apple bundles wireless earbuds with iPhones, they need to continue to include that Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone adapter. IMO.

But the inclusion of only a Lightning to USB-A Cable, rather than a Lightning to USB-C Cable or both, makes less sense given Apple's port future.
The vast majority of car/wall/battery pack chargers that people have today are USB-A. You can make the case for including both USB-C-to-Lightning and USB-A-to-Lightning cables, but not just the USB-C cable. IMO.

I don't get contact wireless charging at all. I really don't. About the only device I've seen it make sense in is the Apple Watch only because of the limited space. No port requirement does make sense there. But on a phone?

Anyway, it's gonna be "silly season" in regards to rumors on this model like no other and I already suspect the whining will reach record levels after the actual announcement.

My only real hope is that Lightning is dumped in favor of USB-C, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. If there's one area where Apple has exactly zero desire to embrace connection standards, it's in the mobile space. And, if they were going to make that switch, the iPhone 7 would have been ideal. Now? It would really suck for the crowd that grabbed Lightning-based headphones. (Of course, Apple will be happy to sell you a $20 adapter.)

Simply don't get why people want wireless charging that requires a pad. It isn't wireless. So the wire from the wall transformer plugs into a mat, that you have to leave your phone on. So now I need a mat for my car, one for my living room, reading area. It is less cumbersome (and cheaper) to have relatively cheap cables by the bed, chair and in car. And the gear that is built into the phone to make this work just adds weight, or takes from space that is better used by a higher capacity battery. And I like using my device easily while it is plugged in. I can charge my phone while in bed and use it with a cable - and use that same cable for my iPad. Until wireless charging is truly wireless, and I can charge my device anytime it is within the space of my home or car, without it being on a mat, it is less convenient than a simple wire which can be found in 6 foot lengths at Sam's club now. Can't wait to see people at the airport next to a wall outlet with their charging mat plugged in, or putting the charging mat on the tray-table and not being able to pick up their phone while it charges.

There is 0 good reason to move the iPhone but 100% good reason to move the mac? Sounds very two faced to me.

Not really. You have to evaluate the utility of USB C on each device separately.

On a Mac, there is potential to run a 5K display, connect multiple USB 3 external hard drives, and connect to the internet via ethernet all with one single cable. This allows for impressive power in a thin and light package (the MacBook Pro boasts impressive specs, while being thin and light to boot) that can tether to an ultra-powerful rig when needed (thunderbolt 3 docks, the LG 5k monitor). Charging, running external displays, linking to external storage units, and potentially linking to external GPU modules make Thunderbolt 3 the perfect port to go all-in on.

On a mobile device like an iPhone and even an iPad, you really only need a cable for charging and syncing, and for those purposes, Lightning / USB A still does the job admirably well. I am not going to dock my iPhone to a thunderbolt dock or drive multiple monitors. My iPad is not going to connect to Ethernet or a 10 tb NAS drive. USB C doesn't use any less space than Lightning either. The only real benefit here is so you can use a single cable for everything.

We may see the iOS devices switch over to USB C ports 3-4 years in the future once USB C is more mainstream, but right now, there really isn't much point.

Lightning was novel before USB-C.

Now iPhone should unify with the USB-C standard adopted on their notebooks but also have wireless charging, which isn't a gimmick - a lot of people have been wanting it for years.

All you guys keep complaining, but I bet you all did the same when the 2016 Macbook Pros were announced, and you still bought the entire inventory. I hope you know that as long as you're willing to pay whatever exorbitant prices that Apple set for their products, Apple is never going to change.

And most of these people scream about how Apple is doomed will be in line on release date to try and get the color and model they must have. Now!

The whining and crying is getting old. Especially over rumors
Is that you, Homer the Narc? :D

Anyway: Who cares if people scream or whatever. They can express however they like.
