Am I the only one who is glad cables are going? Who wants to be locked down to a cable for any reason other than the security of a device (Kensington Lock)

I would be happy for the lightning port to go and don't miss the headphone jack.

No 7S. Apple will release an updated design even if it is aluminum and "familiar" but will also have the iPhone iX (9 but also refer to it as eye-ex) which will be the commemorative anniversary edition which will set the standard for the next few years as features trickle down to the masses (by iPhone 10/X features will be standard). Just like the "edition" watches and $300 coffee table book the iPhone iX will come at a premium, likely above $1000 (which they'll glaze over in the keynote, suggesting to use Apple's iPhone upgrade program for $50 a month, or even use carriers versions with price examples).

Jony Ive video will feature glass pours opposed to gold, steel, or aluminum, talking about how from a single sheet of glass, a "onvalupe" is created within nanometers of space for apples componants to fit in. Its magic is courageous.

I'd welcome it if there was a truly wireless option for charging. Not being restricted to a mat, at least a "zone" plus the point of travel and being able to charge is huge for many-without having to pack several adapters, modules, charges, etc. whether across the world or around the city in a car there needs to be an adequate solution. If your still tied to a dongle or wire out of an outlet, it's not quite wireless. You're still tethered to 6' or so (depending on your cable length) to the outlet... how is that wireless? Contactless? How about non-penetrating? Yeah that last one sounds most appropriate for the current "wireless-pad charging" solutions.

So sounds like iphone 7S (as predicted) and an "iphone pro" version. Ok.. I doubt the pro version will have a faster A chip (than the 7S) so calling it an iphone 8 doesn't make too much sense. Hopefully it'll have support for the next apple pencil but this seems doubtful too.

That wireless charging isn't looking like anything a Palm Pre couldn't do years ago (the pics look pretty disappointing). But the OLED screen looks like the main draw. It still wouldn't surprise me to see this all delayed til 2018.
It seems pretty clear that there will be an iPhone 7s with updated internals and an iPhone tenth anniversary model with a redesign, OLED, camera upgrades, and wireless charging all for an enhanced price. I can hear the pitch already, buy the phone of tomorrow, today. Then in 2018 the iPhone 8 will pick up some if not all of the anniversary iPhone goodies.

That would be a cynical from Apple but it looks like you're right. The funny thing is the special features really aren't all that special anymore.

whaaaaaaaaat?

No headphone jack!!!!!!

Will never buy!!!!!

:D
You jest, but many won't buy because it doesn't have a headphone jack, if past posters stay true to their word.

Cynical, perhaps but that is what Apple did with the anniversary Mac.

They are never going to put USB-C on the iPhone. When has it ever had an industry standard?

Also, I think Apple is settling down and evolving the design year over year. I'm skeptical we will ever see a complete redesign. It makes no sense to change everything every year for the heck of it. Love my iPhone 7 and I don't care that it's not radically different than the 6 I had before. I think they are treating the iPhones similar to MacBooks now.

I have a feeling none of the models will be suitable come release day. No consistency in the product line up? A fourth version of iPhone 6 with antenna bands and protruding cameras??

Then absolutely NO purchase! Total rubbish from a company that's meant to be a design leader!

Get back to making a single great device in three sizes, Apple. End the idiocy!

[doublepost=1486880600][/doublepost]If any of the stupidity in this article rings true, my company will pull all development on iOS, and pull all future Apple purchases.

Customers want a great out of the box experience. If Apple can't provide that, then it won't capture customer interest. Then there's no reason to be part of or support the ecosystem.

iPhone 7 is a true example of a company that was bequeathed an amazing device and direction only to have the company years later drag their heels and release nothing of true value or true innovation. Heck, iPhone 7 is just a third version of iPhone 6 with a new color palette!

Yep all the cables are going... except for the cable that's plugged in the wall that connects to a power mat so the device can charge.
[doublepost=1486881988][/doublepost]Perhaps is feels like this is f---ing hilarious! Not to be insensitive, but please bring back Steve Jobs, his job is not yet done, and his legacy is being destroy. (RIP.) Apple is replacing a simple thin single charging cable with an oversized gimmicky charging disc that still needs to be plugged into the wall!!!!!????? This isn't courage. This is sales and marketing killing the design and engineering departments at Apple. Completely inelegant way forward. NO PURCHASE PERSONALLY, NO PURCHASES FROM MY COMPANY. #SWITCHTIME
[doublepost=1486882258][/doublepost]
Why would anyone have to, really? I haven't plugged mine in for any reason in at least 5 years.
Side note, neither device has ever been powered on. Oh, now I understand why.

I've thought this for a couple years... with all of the money being invested in wireless charging, audio, video, and the like I'm fairly certain Apple's end game is no ports on anything. 100% wireless.
Yeah. End game.
Given the current quality of software, once all ports and physical buttons are gone, if device goes haywire, users will have no choice but to head out Apple store to help force resetting their devices.
Brilliant.

What always impresses me about these rumors is how unrepresentative the people who reply are of the general market.
However some points are also common in general market.
Also they can influence their surroundings.

When you hate customers as much as Tim Cook and Phil Schiller do, then this is the kind of product you might release -- mediocre and poorly thought out from a design point of view, sold through heavy marketing, the way crap products in the world can only be sold. Even the contributors and editors at MacRumors are rumbling with distaste.

Galaxy s8 is looking more and more appealing.
Honestly they won't be that different...it will be just TW vs IOS and for me IOS is a big winner there
[doublepost=1486885790][/doublepost]
All you guys keep complaining, but I bet you all did the same when the 2016 Macbook Pros were announced, and you still bought the entire inventory. I hope you know that as long as you're willing to pay whatever exorbitant prices that Apple set for their products, Apple is never going to change.
this place is filled with moaning trolls now

They would moan even if the new iphone came with a free stripper.

wait, so we went a whole year with hardly any updates - but that was cool cause we were waiting for the extra special iphone 8. now we hear that it's going to be crap too?

who wants to downgrade from + to regular size to get the goods?

pad charger? are you for real?

man this company has honestly gone to ****. and that's from someone who has 12+ apple devices in the house.

every new release is honestly getting worse. both hardware and software.

You hit the nail on the head there, IOS is one of the many reasons I will not move to Andriod and Samsung. As for the moaning trolls, I couldn't agree more, however these will be the same people who are moaning now but will be back on this forum in September, saying how they have ordered the new iPhone but it won't be shipping for a while and they have to wait

no doubt about it, for me at the end of the day tech is becoming so damn hard to improve that many people here and everywhere will never be happy with what a company comes out with.

People wanted OLED, glass back and new features that’s up to date with the market and that’s what apple is doing and people are still moaning.

For me all I want is updated features, better screen and a better camera. Then I’m happy to upgrade. The no bezel thing is exciting to hear from apple and for me that’s enough to upgrade. In terms of tech will I use my iphone 8 the same way pretty much as my 6s and 7? Yeah…most people will.

Exactly, and now people are complaining that Apple are "stealing from Samsung" it's ridiculous, I'm happy with everything that has been rumoured so far, obviously we don't know that any of this is going to happen but so far I'm happy. As you say it's getting more difficult because to improve, what else can they put in them? The iPhone is a great device, the 7 Plus has a brilliant camera, in fact when I go on holiday later this year it will be the only camera I take with me, I think this gets taken for granted by people, especially when a few years go most people were using digital cameras and now it's combined in the smartphones we carry around.

They are trying their hardest to make people mad.

1. Adopting a gimmick charging system years after everyone else.
2. Not being able to plug the phone in to a new MacBook Pro out of the box.

I wouldn't get bent out of shape, I doubt this rumour is true. I still think the strongest cues are from engerous and what they have said.

It doesn't make sense that Apple would release something similar to what they have been bashing for years. My bet is that they will go with tech from Energous or Cota ossia, or something similar.

BUT, Tim Cook is in charge so who knows, he has yet to impress. He greatest claim to fame is taking steve job's product line to China thus increasing sales. And people consider the fool a hero for that. It would be ultra disappointing if Tim put out a wireless charging system like the Apple watch on other devices. That would be my cue to jump ship forever.

Did I overlook the part of charging when not at home? Like when you're at Starbucks (even Tim Hortons for us Canucks) & you want to plug your phone into an electrical outlet/USB hybrid at a table. Do you carry the mat & plug that into the wall outlet (heaven forbid if you slop coffee or food on it)?

Or if you're in your car, or visiting someone's home ("Hey, I'm at 13%... can I borrow your charging mat?" Lay the mat on your lap & look down to use your phone)? The hospital... barbecue... concert, etc.

It'd be a nice thing to have a wireless charging base plugged in a room & sending out charging signals to all people sitting in Starbucks.

Apple is either arrogant or stupid or BOTH (!!) to make the iPhone 7 as the sole device to have the new "courageous" 3.5mm jack removed for one issued phone (not a legacy like removing it for 5, 6 & 7... or even just 6 & 7; it's just 7).

Apple just released Beats X headphones w/ wires & MacRumors reviewed it. A cashgrab to make you buy AirPods?

Apple is just leading its sheep to the slaughter w/ their willy-nilly choices. Didn't I see some sort of mini-lightning article here?

lol "Competition copying Apple again", my ass.

I hope there is no fragmentation with this device, it's bad enough the 7+ having extra features over the 7. Just have two or three screen sizes, all the same spec, and call it iPhone. Simple.

So a bunch of features we wished we had 3-4 years ago? Right on time again Apple! The best iPhone yet!
