It makes no sense to not include a USB C cable in the box because most people charge with the included adapter only, so it's not a compatibility issue. Additionally, they are pushing the standard and it would make sense to at least include it with the premium model.

If the Wireless charging chip comes from Foxconn or Lite-On Semiconductor, this does not rule out the possibility of RF charging.
If they're not including a USB C cable in the box and "wireless charging will not be a built-in feature, but rather a separate accessory" how are you going th charge this iPhone?

Am I the only one who is glad cables are going? Who wants to be locked down to a cable for any reason other than the security of a device (Kensington Lock)

I would be happy for the lightning port to go and don't miss the headphone jack.
Even if it's wireless in your head the wireless charging pad it uses connects to the mains via (you guessed it) a cable. Cables aren't going away

An advantage of wireless charging is that you can build the technology into furniture to hide the cables. For example you can have a charging pad built into a desk or bedside cabinet. Ikea have already started doing this.
In the meantime you cannot use your device and keep charging at the same time, if they use current inductive charging technology.

When you hate customers as much as Tim Cook and Phil Schiller do, then this is the kind of product you might release -- mediocre and poorly thought out from a design point of view, sold through heavy marketing, the way crap products in the world can only be sold. Even the contributors and editors at MacRumors are rumbling with distaste.

Looks at iPad Pro and pencil Apple that I am using in school every day.

Looks at airpods I am using over the other three sets of headphones I own.

Looks at Apple Watch currently on my wrist.

"Mediocre" and "poorly thought out" are amongst the last words I would use to describe them.

It's a good thing the critics are too busy venting here in this forum instead of doing something far more destructive. Imagine if they actually had a job at Apple and tried to bring their views into Apple. They might actually have a shot at ruining Apple!

Shudders at the thought.

The reason I am not waiting for a 5 inch OLED screen with a great battery life......is that I have one. It's called a Pixel. And I have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Ooohhh 5" you say.... that'll get my interest, the price won't though!!!

Let's be honest here eh? No one has ANY conclusive idea what the new phones will be like. So much variation in the rumours.

I have to say in my experience, TouchID is integrated and used a hell of a lot better and more often in iOS then finger print scanners in Android devices are! It's one of the key features of iOS. Their are 'some' things Apple gets right.

If they launched a 5" OLED higher res screen with bezeless design and integrated Touch ID in the screen, stereo speakers and water proofing and wireless charging via inductive tech. Oh and a better camera with OIS and better battery life, I'd be pretty interested.

You know, Tim....

A lot of people are Mac fans because of the software not the hardware which is usually is common with other manufacturers. Innovation can be in the software side of things. Siri, OS X, maps, Safari, mail...

Doesn't matter what apple do, or what they charge, the sheep have to have the latest rip-off from this company. They no longer innovate, they copy (usually 3 years too late), and have the nerve to advertise as though they invented it all. Time to move on from apple. Typed on my nice new OnePlus3t. Half the price, twice the phone.

Well I don't agree ,,,i hate fumbling arround at night in bed ,,to find that little hole on the side trough my case , and same for iphone ,i have a case and to aim directly in line with my stand is a pain in the a..

Wife has same problem

I'm no native speaker but your last sentence makes me wonder.

I'm in the same boat and so is my tech illiterate wife, in-laws, sister, and parents. I would imagine more people use iCloud for their syncing needs than plug them in these days. Mobile devices are the most used form of personal technology by a long shot.
The one thing that always comes up with the tech illiterate in my family is their ever burgeoning amount of photos and videos that they hold so dear. Apple has us by the you know what with its puny 5 GB of free iCloud backup, that obviously runs out very quickly. A lot of people either refuse to spend money on additional iCloud storage, or have zero clue how to use a 3rd party option such as Google Photo or Dropbox for backup. So for them, manually syncing their phones via cable to a Mac, to pull all their photos and videos down to load into iPhoto, is their preferred option. (And guess who has the honor of helping to do this most of the time... ;))

If rumors are true that the syncing/charging cables are going away, really hope Apple is considering the adoption of a free and unlimited iCloud backup solution. (Doubt it but still hopeful.)

I'm nowhere close to replacing my fancy Sennheiser Momentum headphones, bit of a kicker that I'll need to purchase an adaptor to use them but I'm sure I can source one from work anyway .
As the momentum cable is detachable, it would be great it sennheiser made a replacement lightning cable!!

I have left school. I am currently an elementary school teacher and all my Apple products were paid for out of my own salary. Maybe I wasn't being clear enough, but I am currently using my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in my capacity as a teacher teaching in my classroom.

I'd be annoyed if there was a "regular" 4.7 and 5.5 and then a "premium" 5.0. I'm very much used to my 5.5, I wouldn't want to decrease the size for the premium phone.

I have a feeling none of the models will be suitable come release day. No consistency in the product line up? A fourth version of iPhone 6 with antenna bands and protruding cameras??

Then absolutely NO purchase! Total rubbish from a company that's meant to be a design leader!

Get back to making a single great device in three sizes, Apple. End the idiocy!

[doublepost=1486880600][/doublepost]If any of the stupidity in this article rings true, my company will pull all development on iOS, and pull all future Apple purchases.

Customers want a great out of the box experience. If Apple can't provide that, then it won't capture customer interest. Then there's no reason to be part of or support the ecosystem.

Anyone else read this post in Trump's voice?

Gets rid of headphone jack, now gets rid of the dongle...

I passed upgrading my 6 to a 7 and was swithering whether or not to upgrade to the 7s. Just sucks (to me) how Apple is approaching new products.

Am I right in what I have read that the 7s and 8 are being released at the same time with the 8 being a redesigned phone and the 7s a spec bump with no wireless charging?

If they're not including a USB C cable in the box and "wireless charging will not be a built-in feature, but rather a separate accessory" how are you going th charge this iPhone?

Probably the old fashioned way with a Lightning-to-USB-A cable and charger that will be in the box, same as always. Now, a courageous design move would be to completely do away with the lightning connector, removing a major point of weakness in the design and improving waterproofing and enabling a seamless design.

Not having a USB-C cable in the box is a sensible move. 99.9% of iPhone customers don't have a new MacBook to plug it into, it'd be a waste of a cable.

But it would be a nice bit of attention to detail for people who've already bought a $1000 phone and a $3000 laptop not to be inconvenienced by the lack of a $20 cable (which would probably cost Apple $1 to pop in the box). I've bought far cheaper equipment in the past and got a selection of cables and adapters in the box.

That said, do most people actually need to plug their phone into their computer any more?

[QUOTRE]New MacBooks however should come with a USB-A to USB-C adapter.[/QUOTE]

New MacBooks, however, should come with a USB-A port. The fact that this new iPhone - not expected until 9-10 months after the launch of the new MBPs (and over 2 years since the 12" MacBook) is likely not going to feature USB-C pretty much refutes the whole "we'll all be using USB-C for everything in a few months and will wonder what all the fuss is about" argument.

If Apple really thought that USB-C is the future (rather than a user-hostile wheeze to make MacBooks 1mm thinner) then they should have dropped Lightning and switched to USB-C for the iPhone 7 instead of encouraging people to go out and buy Lightning headphones, docks and audio adapters.

Sounds like if they only make one model like this, it'll be positioned as an 'anniversary' edition or some such, and likely command a premium. All while allowing Apple to fine tune the technology and supply chain ready for a more mass introduction of those new elements in next years standard iphone.

Wireless is good, and a pad is just fine. It encourages incremental charging - if I have to plug mine in I often don't bother even though it sits next to my laptop at work all day. If I put a pad there I'd be much more likely to keep it topped up.

no 3.5mm adapter sucks and I hope that part isn't true. It can't cost much, and there are too many wired heaphones out there at the moment. Even though I have BT headphones I still regularly grab a wired pair while around the house.

I can't wait for them to announce that $299.00 Wireless Charge Base at the next Keynote and hear the 3 organized clapping from Apple Employees sitting in the crowd!...

I know I am dreaming but if you buy a premium phone with wireless charging it better come with a charging puck thingy...
