This is very funny... you just proved my point... thanks. ;)

Here's a link from Adobe's site that lists all the phones that support flash and the list is very long.

http://www.adobe.com/mobile/supported_devices/handsets.html

The fact that Apple doesn't support it is a joke after this long and Steve needs to bite the bullet and realize everyone isn't going to make their sites with QuickTime.

I am on ESPN everyday and it's full of Flash and it really bothers me I have to use their Mobile version which is stripped down for Dumb Phones that doen't support a full browsing experience.

umm those only support flash lite 1.0 and 1.1. and if you've ever used flash lite, you know that its pretty much useless. but then again you probably have no idea what you're talking about if you think apple is trying to replace flash with quicktime.

I am no longer taking part in this argument. You are obviously an immature, arrogant stupid american, the type who drives around in his red pickup whooping whilst waving his shotgun over his head, with no regard for anyone who lives overseas or who has differing opinions. You sir, are an idiot and your fellow countrymen should be ashamed of you.

<rant over>

I'm a Brit and in fact I'm ashamed of you. Please don't use terms like 'arrogant stupid American' as if to imply the terms naturally go together - I don't live in the States btw.

Putting aside the fact that none of those have actual web browsers for a moment:

You do know that an iPhone Safari with Flash Lite 2.0 would not support ESPN.com or even YouTube, right?

It's years behind in framework.

Steve Jobs opinion aside, Adobe doesn't make a version of Flash that would actually do Mobile Safari, Opera Mini or Android browser any justice.

If Linux claimed that in an advert and it wasn't true the advert should be banned. I've never seen one so not aware that they have.

Yes, you're exactly right. That was the point of that hypothetical scenario. Now, consider another one: If this is the ridiculous standard of what constitutes "the internet" or "the web", then Microsoft should be able to take out a advert claiming that MacOS X and Linux do not support "all of the internet". (They both lack full support of the Active X API). Their claim would be strictly true, by the standard being asserted here!

Im sorry mate, but you want to check out this guy and his comments. Then I'm sure you will agree. I've been biting my tongue for about half an hour. Im not by any means saying that this is true of all americans, not at all - but this guy is truly the type of person who gives americans a bad name.

I really think there is a cultural difference here. It seems as though in America people expect to be lied to. In Britain we don't, and infact expect to be protected against companies who would try to mislead. That is the point of haveing an advetising standards agency.
I don't believe a person has to be an apple hater to believe that they were wrong in this intence. I Love apple products. I LOVE my iPhone, but I think the ASA were right.

Any kind of nit-picking storm in a teacup like this always comes from England, the land of remarkably stupid behaviour.

To put it in perspective, England has:

Over 6 million surveillance cameras,
No habeas corpus, so if you get arrested they can keep you for 42 days without a lawyer or anyone even knowing you have been arrested.
City councils have the ability to watch you and tap your phone, and see all your email messages. Nice, eh?

The citizens arent actually people, they are Subjects of the Queen - a grumpy old lady who stumbled by birth into a completely undeserved position of power - yes, JUST like Microsoft!

...and many more examples of a country that is little more than a rebirth of East Germany.

So before we all get upset about the amazingly closed world of Flash, (an abomination, IMHO) lets look at the source of this insane little piece of non-news, and lets also consider that the frickin' ad is for the First Gen. iPhone and hasnt been running for several months anyway.

Its an English thing - they have nothing better to do, while they watch their countrymen turn into the new version of the STASI.

Yes, thats right, I DO find this entire piece of 'news' exceptionally irritating, just like I find Flash websites exceptionally irritating.

Unbelievable

As I read the comments in this thread, I was amazed to see how close headed people can be. Come on people this is a very simple matter Apple Inc just like
many other companies in the past marketed a misleading or exaggerated message about the their product (the iPhone). There is no need to start bringing
ignorant replies like "at least apple is educating the european" or that the competitors' phone don't offer flash either. Is not about that is about a mistake that need to be fix and thats all. Becuase if you say to any common folk, "all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone." they'll assume that all their content will be available, becuase the key word in the statement is "ALL THE PARTS" and like it or not Flash and Java are parts of the internet.

I'm sorry. Sincerely. I took your question ("who is ignorant?") to be an attempt to imply that I am. I took offense to this, and I'm sorry I pushed you to the point of hurling insults at me. Perhaps you could explain what you really meant. Or, if that is what you meant, perhaps you could pinpoint which statement led to that conclusion.

Here's an analogy: Suppose Apple touted their next iPhone as being able to make you a full breakfast every morning and Steve mocked other cell phones because they could only toast bread. Then, when the iPhone was released, all it did was toast bread, slather on jam, and pour a glass of OJ. People are like, wait a minute... I expected pancakes, sausage, and eggs. But then apologists are like, stop whining. It's not a full breakfast but you're still getting jam and OJ, which is more than you'd get with other cell phones. And that's true, it's better than the competition, but that's not what Apple advertised the product as capable of. This is not about whether the iPhone exceeds the competition but whether it completely lives up to one of it's top selling points. Okay, that analogy gave me a headache.
Go get some Orange Juice. Sounds like you have low-blood sugar. :D

Well, then please focus on the individual because nobody can give a whole country a bad name. If someone calls me an idiot for being British then I tend to retort that 'you are an idiot for being you' :)

I've not been following the whole thing, and it's quite possible that the guy is the things you say he is, but ad hominem namecalling is not really an effective means of argument, nor is it allowed in the rules of the site. Just because you disagree doesn't mean you have to do so disagreeably.

And I thought it was a discussion about the iPhone lacking Java or Flash support -- but apparently I missed the '*' which said we must act like as****les and insult each other too.

On topic I would sure like to see the iphone support Java and Flash. I'm sure it will someday, but that day isn't coming quickly enough for me.

And President Bush :) At least we have the excuse we had no choice in the matter. :p

Sorry to be harsh, but you cant be serious, can you?

Have you looked at the UK lately? Its a country based entirely on lies and deceit, for crying out loud.

These little advertising standards games are to make you think everything is rosy, while they gently take away all your rights.

Keep it up Brits - the guys in the black uniforms are taking away your Granny, but at least you arent being abused by nasty Apple Inc. and their outrageous claims for the iPhone.

So long as they're not "misleading, harmful or offensive" their adverts can claim anything.

Statements like this make me hate Apple. They basically belittle jAVA and FLASH as if it is just some small third party technology. No Apple, we are not mad because you do not support EVERY 3rd party internet tech but how about the two big ones that compromise about 99% of it!

Well I guess it would be a way to get Apple back for all those buy a mac ads. I would kind of think that it was pathetic if Microsoft did that. Though I wouldn't think it was wrong just pathetic.

The discussion is about the ASA 'banning' an Apple ad because it cant view a Flash website.
The discussion can therefore involve looking at the source of this, and the background to that source.

It can also involve it seems, you stating you desperately want Flash support on the iPhone.

Insulting? I think not, but perhaps we need a thread OverLord who will tell us what we can and can not say. Gee, just like England!

What is a standard for "right" and "wrong" if it only applies to one vendor?

Has anyone complained about other vendors misrepresenting their products?

I'm not sure about the UK, but I know that in other countries similar bodies will look at the whole industry if they get similar complaints about multiple vendors

The citizens arent actually people, they are Subjects of the Queen - a grumpy old lady who stumbled by birth into a completely undeserved position of power.

Hold on - I've just spotted you're in Canada. Assuming you're Canadian, the Queen is your head of state too - Canada being a Constitution Monarchy and all :D
