Yeah, I am probably just paranoid but the guys at the at&t store just scared me because their computer said my number wouldn't port because it wasn't local, but there have to be people driving for all over to different area codes to get phones. and the at&t website said my number was complete portable. Also what was the buying process like at the apple stores?

I might just take the plunge and open it and try it. But I will wait to see if anyone else replies.

Thanks everyone!
I live in Austin, TX and my son is at college in Savannah, GA. When we took him to college the first year I remember trying to get him a cell phone with a local Savannah number and add it to our family plan, which was in Austin. Cingular said that they had no way to do handle multiple phones on a family plan with diferent area codes (all phones on the plan had to be the same area code). I thought this was a very strange limitation at the time, and told them so; they said they would have that capability sometime in the future (no date). Maybe your problems are related to this. If so, it may not be possible for you to activate until you go back home.

i really like the keyboard and the whole text messaging setup i was sitting in my living room texting nonstop for an hour i really truely am in love

I LOVE IT

Sold out in Green Bay, Wisconsin

The AT&T Store in Green Bay, WI had 30 phones, and they were sold out in about 40 minutes. There were about 15-20 people in line when they announced this (10 in front of me). Unfortunately, I didn't get one before they ran out :(

However, I did get to test it. I was very impressed with the virtual keyboard. It felt very natural to me. It is small, but so are all the other things - it's a phone!!! Unimpressed with the camera (mostly due to no flash, but I don't care much - I want GPS!)

The transitions between functions on the iPhone were VERY fast. The unit was on EDGE, and it was a slow, but useable web experience.

VERY SMOOTH screen. I was surprised how lightly and smoothly the screen accepted touch input. I will be ordering one of these things!!

I just checked on Ebay and there are literally HUNDREDS of 8G iPhones listed. That's sick! Everyone outside of the US knows its not going to work outside of the US. I'm in Asia and everyone knows this.

Caller Id Question

When someone calls you from a different area code does it display where they're calling from (ex. state name or city name, state name)? I know Sprint has a feature like that. Please just have someone out-of-state call you and let me know. Thanks!

Just got back from SoHo nyc. At 12am it was still packed and they had a ton...On the phone waiting for AT&T to activate it.

"Activate Phone"

Called AT&T. bought the phone at 6pm in Memphis, TN and have been waiting ever since for my email. They say activation can take up to 6 hours with the current demand on servers. But it looks pretty as a big paper weight right now!

except in the crazy dreamland of Georgie and Dick.

George Clooney and the Dicksee Chicks?

Congrats to all who were lucky to get an iPhone. With quantities running out and long lines at the store and hard time with overloaded AT&T servers for activation, sound like "Grand Opening iDay" was a success. Way to go :apple:

Nice looking iPhone, congrats!
Is there a flash version for Safari? Many sites uses flash, I wonder what would safari/apple do about it in iPhone? Thanks

Which way does your screen rotate? All the videos I've seen show Cover Flow and Safari going landscape when the phone is rotated counter-clockwise. Mine only goes landscape when rotating the phone clockwise. However, if I play a widescreen movie, I have to rotate the phone counter-clockwise for it to be correct. Is my accelerometer installed backwards, or is there a setting to adjust this?

should go both ways. make sure it is mostly upright when you are turning. it doesn't work if it is laying flat or close to it.

IiPhone User is BACK!

Hey guys,
I had posted earlier with my new iPhone and had to leave. Just got back. Any questions that haveen't been answered? Let me know. I'm all activated and ready for questions. So shoot . . .

I cannot believe how awesome this thing is. Even my high expectations were shattered. I'm blown away. This is the coolest thing ever. Setup took just a few minutes. I had to get a new phone number, but that's fine. At least I'll get to gloat about my phone when people ask why my # changed. :p

philadelphia: so extremely happy - love!

here in philadelphia, our Mayor! was third on line waiting for the iPhone - Amazing preamble to a long gratifying day!!

The phone activation took 20 minutes - I switched a line purchased yesterday (ported from Sprint) - and it seemed to crash after a long 20 minute waut, but after turning phone off and on - boom- Apple t & t service!!

Keyboard much easier to use than i imagined - as a treo 600, 650 and 700p user, not having stylus will take a little time to get used to.. but interface is so intuitive - esp with two finger zoom in-out, that is the biggest pleasure i have had using a computer since XMAS 1983 with commodore 64!!

no joke - browsing is completely awe inspiring - the treos and blackb ghostly pale in comparison, zoomin/out works quick and redraw of fonts graphics is stunning.

websites load suprisingly quick with edge (espn, macrumors :))- after hearing all the horror stories, i am really happy about it - certainly quick enough to start seeing a page!

all my banking sites FINE as well!! :)

have yet to use wi-fi much, except for big email attachments.. finally after dealign with Treo 700 mail, a way to see email as if on a "real" computer...

camera needs to be held steady - and needs good light
fun to zoom in and crop pics

speaker phone better than reviewed in my opinion - usable!

google maps load FAST on edge, and sat imaging is cooool - works with crazy intelligence - loaded streets in rome and london as well - with spot-on intelligence (as my names were misspelled)

I AM BLOWN AWAY!!! worth every dime, truly revolutionary product, best experience in palm of hand ever, science fiction worthy screen clarity and brightness - and decent battery.

i havent owned a mac since se/30 - and never thought to - and never owned an ipod before -
this is where the future seems to be heading: a mac in every pocket, and apple t&T routing the calls.

when on safari in landscape mode and on macrumors or other site when you post does the keyboard go to landscape mode when the phone is horizontal?

and how is the keyboard in general? thanks!

Drool, Drool, Drool...

Months, weeks, days and minutes leading up to the launch, they would not shut up. Suddenly its gone all quiet. They must be reading and drooling of envy.

I never "bashed" the iPhone as a product only. No, I only bashed the thought of outrageous calling plans that required having a data plan as mandatory with a calling plan, which, thankfully, turned out not to be that bad.

As far as the iPhone goes as a product... I love it!

Yeah, it works perfectly when turned clockwise, and it will return back to normal when turned upright. It just does nothing when I turn it counter-clockwise.

No Discounts Available

Just under 2 hours and still awaiting activation email. Would love to know why some were able to activate in under 3 minutes and i'm still sitting here with my thumb up my ass.

I'm an existing AT&T customer (old cingular). Keeping same plan, just opting for data plan. Told me during sign up any discounts we previously had no longer apply. Had to agree to that fact.

If anyone gets an email in a similar situation, would love to hear about it.

It looks as if you got into the same boat as I having a phone that is currently or was previously attached to a business account. Mine was previously on a business account before the company went out of business and I bought out my number (two years ago) apparently in the transfer all tags to a business account were not removed which caused me to spend over three hours on the phone with AT&T activation then after I finally came home and spent a half hour hold the agent finally removed the old company address information and I was able to activate with still the same message as you saying I'm not entitled to discounts I'm now on hold with the business center to remove all the other business account tags (866-907-3484) Good luck

not happy

The time is 9:30 Pacific Time... I activated my phone at 8:20 PM.... still no activation. AT&T said, "Yes.. it can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours." I'm now sad ;_: Can I insert my SIM card from my old phone into the iPhone and play around with the phone?

when on safari in landscape mode and on macrumors or other site when you post does the keyboard go to landscape mode when the phone is horizontal?

and how is the keyboard in general? thanks!

Yeah, apparently so far as I can tell, the ONLY time the keyboard goes in landscape mode is in Safari. Notes, SMS, etc. the keyboard only works in portrait.

Keyboard not bad. Still getting used to it. My only problem with it is an issue of perception. I think I'm typing a "G" but end up typing an "H" instead. I have to look "dead on" at the keyboard to hit the proper keys. Besides that it seems to b e pretty damn cool. Getting used to more and more.

One other note. I have had some web pages as well as some photos stay stuck in portrait mode when trying to flip it back to landscape mode. It only happened twice. Maybe I was rotating too fast or something. Can't recreate it.

But besides that is ok . . . . . naw . . it's ****ing BRILLIANT!! So fluid, so intuitive, so freaking GORGEOUS. It's everything you believe it to be . . any more questions?? Let me know. Will be up a while "playing" . . .
:) :) :) :)

While the iPhone is not perfect, and we are hearing about a lot of activation issues, overall it seems as though Apple has a winner here. Congrats to all that got one today.
