Just got off with AT&T

They show both my and my wife's phones within the AT&T system as the apple iPhone, but, no activation yet. She was optimistic that it would be soon, and told me they were advising customers that it would be "as soon as possible" due to network usage. Very pleasant, and I was encouraged that the AT&T system was showing the iPhone, but, still waiting on that confirmation!

love it love it love it

i was the first in line at our att store in louisville. they let 6 in at a time and i was the first to buy the phone. i got the 8gig version.

love it!

tried EDGE and wi-fi...EDGE was really fast! No joke...almost as fast as our wi-fi.

typing with 2 fingers already. not that hard..great prediction software.

sync was super easy and really fast.

call quality is great. camera is great if standing still.

awesome phone! beautiful software! great experience!

I just came back from the Apple Store where I spent 30 mins trying out the demo models (I did not purchase one).

My initial reactions:

Touch screen: extremely responsive and accurate. Zooming in and out was very impressive. When zoomed in, you can place a finger on the screen and pan the picture, webpage, etc in any direction. I can't overstate the accuracy of this touchscreen. In one word, wow!

Browser: Using wifi, it was very fast in comparison to my wifi over broadband that I use at home with PB. Macrumors loaded almost instantly, as did other high-traffic sites. I didn't think the demo models were cellular enabled, so I can't evaluate the speed of the EDGE network. On further reflection, I bet the cellular service was enabled. Too bad I assumed otherwise.

Keyboard: Very easy to use. Errors were self-correcting as promsed. For example, I typed "cppl" and it accurately offered a correction of cool. I only used the keyboard for about 10 mins of the time I used the device and I had almost no difficulty with one finger. With two thumbs, I tapped the wrong keys a little more with my left thumb. I can see where I would become extremely fast, and accurate, after using it for a little longer.

Pictures and Video: Simply beautiful. Really- wow!

Google Maps: I should have spent more time on this. I was able to quickly type and locate my home address. Looks great, jsut like Google maps through my computer. Bookmarking locations will be awesome when I travel.

Mail: Beautiful inline graphics, as previously reported. Attachments (Word and PDF) opened quickly and were easy to view.

Phone: As I stated previously, I did not think that the cellular service would be activated on the demo models, so I never bothered to look at the phone parts (especially since everyone in the store was crushing in behind all of us toying with the phone and I was hearing grumbling that I was spending so much time with my demo- how sad is it that I have to refer to a demo phone as mine?! lol)

You Tube: Worked well, but I only tested it for a short clip. Not sure if it was streaming or cached.

Settings: I didn't get too far with the settings. I looked through them, but don't remember much about them. I looked to see if I saw anything about ActiveSync. Didn't see it, but I also did not expect to as of yet. I've read that this will potentially be added in the near future.

Overall Impressions: I wanted to find reasons not to fork over my hard-earned cash for this device, but I have to say that I am really, really impressed. It is beautiful in industrial design as well as the gui. It is highly responsive and accurate. Over wifi, it is fast. The only thing I have yet to see is how it works over EDGE and how the voice service sounds. Even still, I rate this as a buy.

Add to my original post:

Screen rotation: I noticed that I had to keep the phone more or less straight up and down when I rotated it in order for the screen to rotate to landscape mode. That took a moment to get used to, but after that it was no problem. After it rotated, I was able to hold it an angle and it remained in whichever orientation it had been changed to. Was very responsive after I realized this.

I'm writing this from my iPhone.

It is amazing. Keyboard in landscape mode is lightening fast.

This was my question... I know landscape keyboard comes up in Safari, but can you go landscape in Mail? That would make this a no brainer for me.

Still waiting...

So I got mine and started the sync process at 6:30 p.m. Here it is 9:00 and still no luck. I had left for dinner w/the phone plugged in but it "timed out" so i had to resync it and now i'm continuing to wait. I'm none to pleased. Either ATT or Apple servers were not prepared to handle this.

I know that patience is a virtue... but seriously!!!!!

oh, and I am a legacy cingular customer, as is the wife...

i demoed it at my local apple store and when i rotated, the screen stayed in the vertical position. is there anyone having problems with turning it?

it's a gravity thing. u gotta hold it upright to get that to work consistently it seems. at least for me!

man i feel horrible for u people having porting problems. i had a new number created and it took less than 3 minutes total. perfect experience and amazing device. sad that some aren't having the same.

Isn't this device designed to replace the large video iPods eventually? I would imagine that only the Nano and Shuffle would remain in the future and if you want full capabilities you can buy an iPhone. Right now memory capacity cannot compete with the HD, but in a year or two flash based memory should come down in price.

Yes, but Apple will need something in 2007 that they can deliver. I can see the next iPod being the same formfactor/screen of the iPhone, w/o the 'phone' hardware. And instead that h/w, a hard drive. Sell it at $200 less then the $499 iPhone w/80 or 100GB and you're there. (I don't know what the largest capacity of the smaller hard drives that the original-form-factor iPod's uses).

Oh, one thing tho, if they do this, and it's got wifi, put the camera on the front or use that Apple patent so the camera is embedded in the screen. I want my Mom to be able to use it to video-ichat from the couch w/ the grandkids.

Are you kidding?!

You wait 6+ months for an iPhone but then can't wait another minute/hour/day to have it activated? Some of you new iPhone whiners are pathetic. Go out for a walk, enjoy some music, pet your dog, call a friend... no wait, scratch this last one. Whatever... just take a deep breath and be glad you finally have that thing you covet finally in your hands. By this time next week, ya'll will be on this forum complaining about something else. Go figure.

Whoa there, buddy.... Someone needs to change their pad, huh? I was actually responding to a question, adding a touch of insight and knowlege to some other concerned people out there with a legitimate problem.... Being I had actually talked to someone about it @ AT&T. But I see you were just hunkerin' to jump down somebody's throat tonight. Go get a life, and bring me the change, or better yet.......:D

Make it a great day!

You may want to consider reading ALL the posts, before you accuse people of whining. Plus, there are no reasons for insults here.

I just got mine, and it is freaking brilliant. It is without a doubt the coolest piece of consumer electronics I have ever seen. Literally.

However - does anyone else think that the volume coming from the earpiece is rather low? The volume through the headphones is quite good, but the earpiece speaker is kind of quiet. I imagine it will be quite hard to use in a noisy environment.

Is anyone else's unit like this?

yeah a little low

Screen is insanely bright!

Awsome screen! Insanely bright. When you first get the iphone, the brightness is set to medium. Turning it up to max, makes it look amazing.

Have a few quick takeaways:
-EDGE on safari works well, because safari only loads the part of the webpage you are looking at
-tested EDGE speed at 180kbps, NYC
-zoom in zoom out is very fluid and natural with pinching motions, makes web browsing the best experience on any mobile device, to date (i've used several)
-youtube works as advertised. Looks clearer on iphone than on desktop, probably because screen is smaller on iphone so matches the res of the video better
-have had no problems typing so far

ok back to playing with it!

HELP!!

I bought an iPhone today at an AT&T store and they were describing the number porting process. Well I am at school and my current number is registered in another area code. So they were thrown off at this concept.

And the AT&T tech support is dead right now.

I don't want a new number and don't want to risk the 10% restocking fee, so has anyone else experienced problems porting numbers outside of their current area code before I open my box? (I know, I know, unopened iPhone, shame on me)

Couldn't you use your home address?

It shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. You need your old telephone number, and your account number from your wireless bill. Everything else will be fine. (now you may be waiting for some time to get it to port because the ATT and Apple servers are being slammed right now) but otherwise it will be fine. Phone Number and Wireless Account Number. Watch the video on apple to see exactly what the screens look like to see for yourself.

Now waiting for an Apple product specialist. The first contact said, "Things are crazy." Shocking. :)

At least some people are starting to get the activation emails. I have hope!

According to the Apple rep, it's network congestion on Apple's end. They're working through the backlog, but no estimate on when emails will be forthcoming (other than as soon as possible).

Back to the Apple Store to look at accessories while waiting, I suppose. What's a few more hours after a day in line. ;)

Maybe Im stupid, but why can't you use your old phone number, it should work if you stuck with the same carrier. and if not, just get a new phone number. It's not that big of a deal.

Well I am in heaven.

I waited in line for 1.5 hours at the Apple Store in Orlando Millenia Mall .

I was about the 250th person in line and there were maybe about 75 more behind me. They will sell out by tomorrow.

This thing is awesome.

My only complaints are the typing and the slow EDGE network.

The phone features could use some upgrades, but I am sure they will come in time with software updates.

I would like to see minutes used and time of last call.

Once you play with it you will be amazed.

hey all not that i can add a lot to this, but for anyone who didnt get to use it yet...
its just how it seems online, it sounds too good to be true, but its not.

now im not saying the iphones perfect-not at all, but what apple says about it is all true.
touch screen works great, typing was perfect, pretty much everything was.
the only time it choked up was when making a call.
but i only used this at the apple store, and dont own one so...

How are you guys getting throught to ATT customer service. I have been on hold for 3.5 hours and still no one.

Word of advice for newbies: if you have a Dell monitor, DON'T PLUG IT INTO THE MONITOR'S USB PORTS. If you do, it will think there's no SIM card in it. I had to power the phone off and plug it into my Mac Pro's front port for it to be recognized correctly. Odd, I know, but true.

Anyway, activating now.

Yeah, I am probably just paranoid but the guys at the at&t store just scared me because their computer said my number wouldn't port because it wasn't local, but there have to be people driving for all over to different area codes to get phones. and the at&t website said my number was complete portable. Also what was the buying process like at the apple stores?

I might just take the plunge and open it and try it. But I will wait to see if anyone else replies.

Thanks everyone!

got mine ordered (ran out at the at&t store just before me). 8gig. supposed to drop ship direct before more units are sent to retail locations.

anyway, i really want to hear the differnt ringtones. if anyone has a bit of time to do a youtube of the different ringers, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

First Impressions

• activated under family plan. transferred from sprint with no problem. activation complete in around 10 minutes.
• set up mac email account and sent and received email with no problem.
• synced 4,000 contacts from address book - no problem
• synced play lists for iTunes - no problem
• synced my calendar and two subscribed calendars - it put them all together. haven't figured out how to separate or if they can be separated yet.
• set up wifi on my closed WEP protected network. found the iPhone wifi address under SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT>WIFI ADDRESS (have to scroll down when you get to the ABOUT menu. Once I updated my Airport Extreme base station, no problem.
• Got first incoming call from my wife - no problem.
• Made first outgoing call to my dad - no problem.
• Read newspaper article via wifi access - pretty responsive. Tried same using EDGE and gave up. Took too long to load paper.
• Looked up my own address in contact list and got Google Map up in about 8 seconds over wifi

all i can say is this thing ROCKS! Apple, you've hit a home run!

No issues so far for me either. Transferred from sprint, kept my number. was extremely easy. As for iphone...it will blow you away. no review/picture can describe how it feels and looks. Screen is extremely clear/vivid, much more than i anticipated.

Has anyone got yahoo mail to work. I am trying to pull my messages, which I can do on my Mac computer through Mail, but not on the iphone. It says incorrect password, but I am putting in the correct one.

Also has anyone noticed, that the contact pictures that you have on your Address Book on your mac do not sync over the iphone, and you have manually add pictures onto you contacts on the iphone.
