Yeah, apparently so far as I can tell, the ONLY time the keyboard goes in landscape mode is in Safari. Notes, SMS, etc. the keyboard only works in portrait.

Keyboard not bad. Still getting used to it. My only problem with it is an issue of perception. I think I'm typing a "G" but end up typing an "H" instead. I have to look "dead on" at the keyboard to hit the proper keys. Besides that it seems to b e pretty damn cool. Getting used to more and more.

One other note. I have had some web pages as well as some photos stay stuck in portrait mode when trying to flip it back to landscape mode. It only happened twice. Maybe I was rotating too fast or something. Can't recreate it.

But besides that is ok . . . . . naw . . it's ****ing BRILLIANT!! So fluid, so intuitive, so freaking GORGEOUS. It's everything you believe it to be . . any more questions?? Let me know. Will be up a while "playing" . . .
:) :) :) :)

haha, thanks. glad you got one. my at&t store is sold out :( so i have to wait a while!!! oh well. i just gotta know when they'll get a next shipment...only time will tell. thanks again.

Which way does your screen rotate? All the videos I've seen show Cover Flow and Safari going landscape when the phone is rotated counter-clockwise. Mine only goes landscape when rotating the phone clockwise. However, if I play a widescreen movie, I have to rotate the phone counter-clockwise for it to be correct. Is my accelerometer installed backwards, or is there a setting to adjust this?

I was talking about the times where you want to rotate a webpage so that it is in landscape view instead of portrait mode. If I held the demo phone at too much of an angle and tried turning the phone, it didn't always rotate the view. So when I held it more upright and then rotated the phone, the view rotated properly.

Still waiting...

Was #30 in a line of what wound up being at least 200 in the Apple store in Nashville, TN. Waited since 8am - great experience - people in line & Apple employees were great!

Got the phone home tonight. Existing AT&T customer. Activation on iTunes took about 3 minutes. Got the dreaded "Your activation requires additional time to complete" message. Called AT&T after 2 hours - # shows up as activated in their system - not sure what the hold up is, but I know there are a TON of other people dealing with this exact same thing.

I'm at nearly 4 hours now. Don't mind the extra wait (I've been waiting since January, after all) - just excruciating sitting here looking at the beautiful iPhone sitting next to my computer unusable :-(

Hopefully soon!

Hey guys,
I had posted earlier with my new iPhone and had to leave. Just got back. Any questions that haveen't been answered? Let me know. I'm all activated and ready for questions. So shoot . . .

I think a lot of people are interested to see if meebo.com works on the iPhone. Someone had problems sending a chat because there was no enter key? Someone suggested to hit the Send key. But no response yet whether it works or not.

I'm in Asheville, NC. I was 6th in line (I got there at 10:30 in the morning) at an AT&T store and there were 3 people that got there at 4 am and 2 other that there a few minutes before me. When the doors opened, there about 40 of us in total. There were 5 registers, so I had to wait a few minutes in "cue" for the next availble register. When I got in line, the servers in our region (NC, SC and GA) all went down. I had to wait 30 minutes before I was alowed to run home with it. When I got home, I remembered I forgot to update iTunes. So I did that. Beleive it or not, activation only took 3.5 minutes. Apparently, I was really lucky. But I beleive once all the hoopla subsides, this is what the average user can expect for their activation.

Seriously, when was the last time ANYONE ever got their phone activated in less than 5 minutes. This alone is a feat that deserves some applause!

Kudos to Apple for an incredible experience. I met some great people in line. Spent all day doing nothing but having a good time and really communication and talking to people. Haven't had that kind of exepreience since waiting for tickets for a Grateful Dead show 20 years ago.

At 5 hours now and still waiting, I feel your plight. I shut it down and turn it back on every once in awhile hoping it will catch! Any one got a report on how good the phone reception is?

You at Green Hills Mall? I may have to buy one..just wanted to hear initial impressions.

Caller Id Question

any more questions?? Let me know.

When someone calls you from a different area code does it display where they're calling from (ex. state name or city name, state name)? I know Sprint has a feature like that. Please just have someone out-of-state call you and let me know. Thanks!

Amazing! Like A Honeymoon Experience!!

Months, weeks, days and minutes leading up to the launch, they would not shut up. Suddenly its gone all quiet. They must be reading and drooling of envy.

Well, iPhone shut them up very well. Boy its just amazing piece of technology. The transitions and working of menus is just buttery! not too much but just adequate to make it a pleasure experience. I am not sure if Rev 1 products of anything could be so good!

Just purchased my 8GB iPhone a couple of hours ago, and all I can say is wow!!! I purchased mine at the AT&T store in Bloomington, IL. I believe they sold out as I was number 14 in line of about 60. They only had 16 8GB models, and not many more 4GB models (not sure of the exact number), so there were definitely some disappointed people in line.

This phone is absolutely amazing. The touchscreen is very responsive, and the iPod is very impressive. Everything about the phone is extremely simple and intuitive. Granted, the keyboard is a little difficult at first, but after about an hour of playing with it, you start to get the hang of it and not make as many mistakes.

Overall, I would say that Apple has definitely knocked one out of the park with this device. Again, WOW!!!

I'm actually using my new iPhone to type this,I love the keyboard on it, everything about it is great and i only stood in line for about 2 hours :D

Cheers

Clay

the keyboard functions well, even with my big fingers

Touch screen is amazing

when on safari in landscape mode and on macrumors or other site when you post does the keyboard go to landscape mode when the phone is horizontal?

and how is the keyboard in general? thanks!

I am quite a fast typer and thought this small keyboard will be no good for me. Guess what, I typed with two thumbs right away and I was blown away with the responsiveness of the keys and also the predictive texting. Just WOW! really cant describe in words. You gotta check it for yourself. I dont understand why all of reviewers were crying so much. I believed in apple's description of using 'brute force' method of typing and they werent wrong. The damn thing was correcting it so well. Actually to be frank, it looked like the device just needs to know approximately where you hit the keyboard area and it will predict much like with T9 phone prediction method.

Rest of the stuff, touchscreen is just amazing. Email is darn good. iPod - dont even need mentioning!

Truly amazing.

Now to no-sayers (iHaters), go and check the phone yourself and then see what you are missing in your hatred.:D

I have enjoyed everything about the iPhone so far. I haven't gone through everything yet, but email works great, I really like the conference calling set up, speaker phone works great, iPod is very cool, got stocks and weather going...overall, so far I think this is awesome. Going to try out the WiFi tomorrow and mess around with YouTube and Safari. I also bought the Shure headset for iPhone, I really like it. The Motorola BT one (the new one) was not compatible (which I assumed since the BT profile was not listed in tech specs). The display and touch screen are delightful. I adjusted to the keyboard in about 30 secs and type on it just as fast and accurate as my old BB.

It would be nice to have different ring tones assigned to certain contacts, but maybe that will come with custom ring tones. I haven't figured out if you can sort email by person, reverse date, etc...maybe I just missed it.

I'll post more tomorrow from my iPhone once I play around with some more stuff.

Anyway, I am a happy customer!!!

P.S. the at&t store I went to in Fond Du Lac, WI was fantastic!!

Yeah. Doubt they have any left, but I guess no one knows how many each store got. No one at the store said #s, just that they promised to 'warn' those waiting if they were getting low in numbers.

I had a great experience (apart from waiting on what appears to be an AT&T overload) - the iPhone is GORGEOUS. That's all I can say since I can't actually DO anything on it until it is activated :-(

I'm pretty sure this is a feature. On apple.com/iphone, the new "finger tips" videos they posted today showed one that had "assign a ringtone" where I thought they were assigning a specific ringtone to a specific contact. You might head over there & make sure this is right, but I think it is.

GSM Interference?

I am surprised that nobody has reported on the lovely TzzzzTzzTzzzz speaker sounds that the Cingular / AT&T GSM gives us. I am sure that Apple has shielded the iPhone, but I still wonder / pray.

Cheers.

This is something I still could not figure out. Because on meebo, I still do not see a "Send" button on an active chat window. If meebo just added that, it would work fine. But as of right now I cannot transmit anything, just recieve messages.

Where the hell is the SLINGBOX app??? THAT is the killer app for this device that will force me to go buy one immediately!

I got in. All my AIM buddies are showing up . . . . so far so good . . hold on

You can assign different ringtones to different contacts/callers on the iPhone now - no need to wait!

Why are you on the phone trying to activate it?? You should be doing it through iTunes.

I think he means on his landline waiting on tech support with AT&T. I called them at the 2 hour & 4 hour marks. The second time they pushed me over to the Apple queue. I'll see if Apple is any better help :-(

Hope your luck is better than mine!

Yes, you can assign different ringtones to differnet contacts. The video on the site shows you how to easily do this.

i've been waiting three hours in about 10 minutes...I called the att number they listed in itunes and the nice gentleman said it takes about 2 to 3 hours on a night like this. Surprisingly he was really nice about everything and didn't mind my excitement to get the phone up and running
