after 6 hours of using the iphone:

I'm already feeling like I have a hand cut off versus my BlackBerry Curve. Functionality wise its a step down right now. So many good 3rd party APPLICATIONS (not web crap) that I can use on my curve like multi-platform IM clients, Opera Mini, IRC clients, all sorts of other stuff.. and the curve is also small and light and takes great photos that are amazingly easy to email to people. Even the simplest stuff on the iPhone is TOO SIMPLE. It's so simple that I really can't tolerate not having customization on some of these applications, like - where's the camera configuration??

Right now i'm really frustrated, and I just broke a T-mobile contract for this phone. They said there's a 14 day return policy at the apple store but I have no idea whether I can get my t-mobile number back and my t-mobile account back... this sucks.

You are joking right? Good 3rd party applications like IRC, IM, and Opera? Good God man, that isn't a list at all. I can see maybe complaining about not having Pocket Quicken, or something else. But chat programs and a 2nd rate browser (Opera on handhelds sucks)??

Wow.

IPhone and PDA Functionality?

I'm wondering about how the new IPhone functions as a PDA? Can you print your calendar off of it? Take notes and print them? Etc.???? This was my original question and I just found a David Pogue review where he basically said it wasn't as good as 1996's Palm Pilot 5000...when it came to PDA functionality.

I think a lot of people are interested to see if meebo.com works on the iPhone. Someone had problems sending a chat because there was no enter key? Someone suggested to hit the Send key. But no response yet whether it works or not.

Everything works fine ( I can see my buddy lists, etc.) until I get to the point of sending a message. Everywhere on the site, all items that need to be sent use a "SEND" grahical button that you can click. But when composing a message, you usually hit "RETURN" (when you are in a non-iPhone setting). But when you type your message in iPhone, there is no "RETURN" key as there usually is. For example, when typing an URL in Safari in iPhone, a "RETURN" key appears to actually "send" what you have typed in. But when at the Meebo site in the message pane, no "RETURN" key appears in your keyboard, so you can't actually "send" what yoi have typed. A shame, since everything else works, but just the very last step. Hopefully this will be worked out.

I am quite a fast typer and thought this small keyboard will be no good for me. Guess what, I typed with two thumbs right away and I was blown away with the responsiveness of the keys and also the predictive texting. Just WOW! really cant describe in words. You gotta check it for yourself. I dont understand why all of reviewers were crying so much. I believed in apple's description of using 'brute force' method of typing and they werent wrong. The damn thing was correcting it so well. Actually to be frank, it looked like the device just needs to know approximately where you hit the keyboard area and it will predict much like with T9 phone prediction method.

I think it would be a great idea if Apple were to provide an application (or AJAX website) that would let people compete for fastest typing speed on an iPhone. It would make for great publicity and would blow away the negative comments/fears that had been expressed about using a virtual keyboard.

stopped by our local Apple store around 8:30, saw several people walking out with two bags each, but no line...walked in and they said we just sold our last 8 gb unit and have 12 - 4 gb phones left... :(

I played with the display model...LOVED it. The only issue was the phone I was using was in EDGE mode, not WIFI, all the others (8 or more demos) were using WIFI...the Apple store employee tried restarting it, but it stayed with EDGE...glitch? too many phones connected to their network?

Yep - SURE DO

HELP!!

I bought an iPhone today at an AT&T store and they were describing the number porting process. Well I am at school and my current number is registered in another area code. So they were thrown off at this concept.

And the AT&T tech support is dead right now.

I don't want a new number and don't want to risk the 10% restocking fee, so has anyone else experienced problems porting numbers outside of their current area code before I open my box? (I know, I know, unopened iPhone, shame on me)

I had to do that exact same thing! Basically just find someone - a parent, a really good friend, grandma, whatever, that lives in the same state as your old area code and have them be the main account holder and you'll be the user/billing person. After a couple weeks call in and "transfer financial responsibility" to yourself (you have to have them do it first). That's an $18 fee but honestly that's the only way they can do it...

Once you're with a company you can change locations all you want and no worries about keeping your number.

Good Luck!

The phone is just simply amazing. 2.5 hours at the Folsom, Ca AT&T store, probably 40 people behind me when I went in the door, I think I was number 87 going through the door. My activation took about 5 minutes and since then I've been having a blast. Videos look great, sound is loud with decent bass...but if you have expensive headphones you're going to have to do some work with a dremmel. Bang & Olufsons barely, barely fit and you have to give a good push for the jack to seat. Shure's will not seat, the rubber insulation on the jack is too thick.

Ringtones Suck on the iPhone!!!

So the worst thing about the iPhone (I just bought an 8GB version) is the ringtones! You can not use anything but the apple loaded ringtones, no music, no downloaded ones etc. and the 20 or so they put on there really suck! Whats the point of using a ringtone for a contact to know who is calling if there is such little variety? brrrrring oh thats my sister, no that was clearly a trring trring so it must be your roomate!

LAME!

But my activation only took about 3 minutes :)

I Love It!!!!!

Picked mine up at Mich Ave. store in Chicago earlier tonight - setup was a breeze (I was already a AT&T customer) and I just got back from a bar where I was showing it off to friends - they all loved it and now want to get one. This has to be the most amazing "gadget" ever. Everything worked just like Steve promised in the keynote and what I had seen in the commercials. It is really amazing...

when did you activate yours?

11:52 PM EST I finished the activation setup. 12:35 PM I think it was when I got the email and finished the activation process.

BTW, if you go to the settings of the iPhone and go to wifi, it will be A) off B) Hasn't selected the network. Similar thing happened to mine when trying the wifi. I bet someone turned off the wifi on that demo to see how fast EDGE was in the store and forgot to turn on WiFi when he left. Stupid Apple employees. While I was playing with the iPhone, the kids next to me were asking the employee next to me how do they turn off the iPhone. The guy said press the button once to turn it off. But, they knew they only put it to "sleep" due to seeing the video to turn it off, but forgot how to. I showed them and the employee just agreed with me.

Does anyone know what time the Apple stores close tonight? I can't take it any longer . . . I must have one!

I'm typing this on my iPhone right now. Simply amazing. People in LA are walking in to stores all over town and still getting phones. Go get one or go at 9am tomorrow. You won't regret it.

Edit: stores close at midnight.

and I was number 18! Got in line at 3:00 and number 21 arived 10 minutes later. There were 12 8gig and 8 4 gig units for sale. Yep, a small town. Good thing I wanted the 4. I have been playing with it (activated) now for hours. Piss off to all of the bashers out there. Nothing compares. Nothing.
I am amazed i was not going to buy one but my son keep asking so found a short line and cant take my eyes off the screen, sold my Nec n908 here on the sale area already...this phone takes my breath away.......fast and beautiful....

Buy one.....its so amazing :)

Umm... OK seriously to what purpose would you print off your calendar from an iPhone or PDA for that matter... the PDA IS the calendar... you just turn it on and behold your calendar in all its glory. Where would you carry this printer in your hip pocket? I'm not trying to troll here just understand... am I missing something cause this is basically an exact synch of your iCal so you could print a calendar out from there... or if not at your desk then you could plan ahead by having your iCal sych with Google Calendar and print from there. Just wondering.

As for the second question you can take notes on this... much better than the Notes my Tungsten T3 took. And you can pretty much email anything that you should be able to to yourself.

Also I am shocked at how mac-like this is... I mean I know it's got OS X but when the screen dimmed like on my Macbook I was taken aback. Although in my head I knew better it just FELT weird to have a portable device do this...

Thank you Zappos!

So, I went to the Apple Store tonight with my wife. We weren't sure if we were going to buy the iPhone (well, I was sure.. she wasn't sure if we should). I showed her some of the features... photos, ipod.. when we got to the Safari icon I asked her what website would she like to see.. she replied, "Zappos.com" . I typed in the address, the page loaded... and seriously, her face lit up and asked, "So, i could check this website anywhere? Even in Nordstroms?"
I nodded and told her that depending on the signal it may not be as fast but yes. To which she replied, "So do you want me to wait in line?" .

So, thank you Zappos :p .. and thank you Apple!

BTW, I plugged in the iPhone and in less than 5 minutes my phone was ready to be used. I am an existing ATT customer with a Family plan. I had to deal with all of the upgrade issues for all of the phones on the older ATT network a couple years ago when i bought the RAZR. Since we were with ATT for soooo many years (back when it was called L.A. Cellular) and I wanted to add my wife's phone who was on the new Cingular network, I had to upgrade ALL of my ATT phones to the new network.

So, for those who are having this problem, it's not Apple, it's ATT.

Wow, that was a lot for my first Post!

UGH. I bought my iPhone at 6:30 and went to activate it at 7:00. I'm still waiting too. I called AT&T and they said it must be a problem with the credit check taking a long time. He also said there haven't been any complaints. Grr. Liar. Seriously, I just bought my first new car, and the credit check was faster than this!

This is what I get for not even playing with it before I left the store because I wanted to show my friends my bling.

I'm pretty ticked off. I waited in line for 7 hours to get the phone. Got one for my hubby too because he could not be there. I got home at 7:30, tried to activate the phones...HIS is working fine, but mine STILL NOT ACTIVATED. it is taking longer to activate my phone than it did for me to stay at the mall all day and wait to buy it. it really sucks. yeah, his is cool and I can use it, but seriously...this is insane having to wait this long for mine to be activated. I have called support and they basically tell me there is nothing they can do. were they not prepared for this??????

I just got my iPhone. Honestly, tonight, I left home to go to the local Apple Store at 9 pm.

I figured they wouldn't have any in stock, but I wanted to try one out. I also wasn't set on getting one.

I used it at the store, and my jaw was literally wide open while using it. I bought an 8GB and went home.

I was up and running in under 5 minutes as an existing AT&T customer who was still under a 2year contract.

Syncing music and movies took another 10 minutes on top of that.

This phone is so amazing. You all really need to use it. Watching YouTube over EDGE was still very reasonable - maybe a 15-20 second wait time while the video buffered.

The screen is delicious. Absolutely gorgeous. The software is, too. I can't get enough, and this phone is just phenomenal so far. I wish it had iChat and Exchange support, but we can't have everything. Even without these features, it's still a fantastic device. Go Apple!

Activation Success

Hey all,
Just successfully activated a new AT&T account and sync'd my 8GB iPhone.

I am floored at the ease of the entire process. Floored.
Not one single misstep or hiccup. From the liquid transaction at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in CO, to the sync - unreal.

Very, very impressive Apple.
Thank you!

And the device... the device is remarkable.
Anyone on the fence about the price, the features the storage, whatever (like I was, even in line I was unsure if I was really going to act) - just get one. Upon touching it, all doubts will fade. Instantly.

Nite...

How's the coverage out there in CO? I will be going to Estes Park on vacation next month and am hoping the phone MIGHT still work...

I agree, AT@T has already pissed me off and I have only been a customer for a few hours. Im still waiting for my phone to activate so I can play with it and make today worth while. This is a joke...

So far it's great. Edge is definitely way slower than my wifi. But what the hell, it's there if I need it. I can't imagine doing too much browsing on it though.
