iPhone in OZ

nahh i highly doubt that, ill have exactly the same version of what yous have now....cept in a years time..

I doubt that, Australia has a fairly strong 3G presence. I would be betting on a 3G iPhone in Australia by mid next year or end of March at the earliest. But I will be watching battery performance on the 3G versions though. Haven't heard who Apple is courting as the service provider here though. I'm betting Vodafone

Congrats to all.

PS. Why did RIM go through the roof today up 22%

nope, none 3rd party software AS OF YET!! ull have to use web based msn. iloveim.com or wateva those chat sites are...sorry

Oh ok, thanks for the reply. I wonder why they didnt allow skype, coz I use skype on my Nokia E65 through the 3G network (UK) and it allows me to talk to anyone in the world 24/7 absolutely for free and from anywhere in the UK.

Oh well, well see what happens, maybe there will be some way!

yes skype is an amazing program, i love it!!!! that would kinda defeat the purpose of the iphone tho, cauz instead of using ATT or hueva's service u just use teh free version... that would be funny..

You are joking right? Good 3rd party applications like IRC, IM, and Opera? Good God man, that isn't a list at all. I can see maybe complaining about not having Pocket Quicken, or something else. But chat programs and a 2nd rate browser (Opera on handhelds sucks)??

Wow.

Are you kidding me? If there is any second rate browser it is Safari. Anything from the Mozilla family or Opera beats out Safari for sure. I will always use Safari before IE, but come on.

Plus I think the real point is that the iPhone is missing out on choice! This is the same thing with the iPod. I have an iPod it is great and has dominated the market despite never having the best hardware on the market. I think iTunes is great. Whenever the iPhone makes its way to Japan I will be very interested in buying one as long as it has opened up or Apple has added several more apps to it. I mean why is there no iChat client? iChat is an essential mac app!

At the Palo Alto California store the folks from systm.org purchased an iPhone and then tested it to destruction. The screen broke when it was dropped from a "reasonable" height. The attached picture shows what happens when you jam a screwdriver into a battery.

The complete video should be available tomorrow on systm.org.

No I am NOT 16.. I am just a travelling consultant that uses my phone every hour of the day (including weekends). So here I am about ready to head out of town for work w/o a working phone.

Tell me if your phone was your lifeblood and responsible for your income, would you be so happy with them turning off the phone. Hey I dont care about waiting to use my new phone, but dont turn off my old one until I can use it.

If my phone was my lifeblood and responsible for my income I would not be stupid enough to put it all at risk by buying an untried / tested product on the day of launch. If your phone is so important then why did you not wait for the rush to die down and buy your phone when you were at less risk?

Sorry, I can't let that one drop. In what regard is Safari second rate compared to Firefox, or Opera ? Rendering speed ? Nope - Safari beats both of them. Standards compatibility ? Nope - Safari is the most standards compliant browser out there.

I agree with your sentiments about ichat though - don't forget that Apple is free to add features to the iPhone with software updates though. Look at the Apple TV - I can now watch YouTube videos and stream photos on mine, neither of which I could do when I first bought it.

I bet there are Apple engineers weeping at the sight of that. Matter of fact, there's plenty of potential iPhone owners weeping at it too !

Accessing files on iPhone

2 questions for you lucky Guys & Gals :)

1) When iPhone is connected to your computer, can you see it in Finder or Windows Explorer? If so, can you see folders on it?

2) Can you download a file from the web in Safari? If so, where does it go? (For example a text file).

Thanks!!

Rod.

I believe the answer to both questions is "no", you can't use it as a disk or download things from the web (it doesn't have a file manager, which seems strange for a "computer").

Firefox is quicker for me, the middle click to open new tabs and close a tab works fine in Firefox, and the tabbing is just generally better. Firefox seems more compatible with all the websites I've visited. Safari just comes across as very basic.

hhmm so that means you arent able to copy files to it. only things that are supported in itunes. right?? like..videos, musik, contacts, calendar, etcetc...

Yup, seems so. Although if someone who owns one could confirm this it would be helpful. Everything I've read supports this, it definitely can't be used as a disk.

Seems Apple are being really strict with the iPhone at the moment, it's so locked down. No 3rd party apps, no file manager, no disk use...

First Impression

My first impression of the iPhone......this thing is amazing!!!!

But I can't believe all of you guys stood in line for hours even days.
I went to work as usual and afterwards went to the Tigers/Twins game.
After that walked right into the Apple store at 10:30pm and walked out with an 8 gig iPhone 5 minutes later.

haha yea alot of people are asleep...i think. its a bit quiet atm. i dont blame apple for locking down the iphone, so they should! its exactly the same as osx not being able to run on other processors and stuff, well it can, but u kno wat i mean.

Actually it's more like OSX only running inbuilt Apple apps and not allowing you to install any third party ones. The phone runs OSX and lots of phones allow third party apps.

But it really does look awesome. I just hope that when it comes to the UK you can buy it unlocked...

I don't know if I am amongst the first to find an issue with
the email or not, but I do see a problem...

I get a lot of email. Perhaps 200+ plus per day. Mostly spam.

While going through a mass deletion of email (edit mode) the
phone locks up. In fact, it has done it on a regular basis whereas
I'm deleting one mail after another and then freezes. I usually
have to go back to the home screen then back to my email to
continue.

So far that's the only issue I see here.

now all it needs is some nice apple widgets :) istat on the iphone, i wonder how hot it runs!!!! :p

The iPhone is cool man, so it runs at 0 degrees c. :p

I'm sure Apple will come out with lots of software updates for it, they may even eventually open it up for third party applications. The way the main menu is set up clearly shows they intend for there to be more apps.

I do think it needs a file manager though, my current phone has one and it's invaluable. I'm assuming that the iPhone is running Finder (as it's OSX) so it just needs a front-end.

VLC, Adium and Skype would be nice...

EDIT: Speaking of VLC... It can alter the aspect ratio so that any content can fit a screen. Why can't the iPhone do this with movies instead of simply zooming in and cutting off the edges of content?

all smooth and A-MA-ZING

THE GETTING:
- showed up at the San Francisco flagship store shortly past 7pm
- waited only 10 minutes! (the line was important enough but it was moving fast and it did not seem to shrink: they really had a continuous flow of people coming in)
- got cheered by two rows of ecstatic Apple employees
- bought my phone in 1 minute tops
- rushed back home on my bicycle and became almost as impatient as car drivers when I got stuck in the monthly Critical Mass parade
- activated the thing in 5 minutes tops (I did not have an iTunes account and I wasn't an AT&T customer)
- uploaded music, movies and contacts with one click, same as iPod...

THE PLAYING:
- incredible, stunning, amazing, beautiful, fabulous and so damn clever! I'm sure it has some defaults but who cares? Who cares? Yes, WHO?... Only those who haven't had the thing in their hands yet, of course!

family plan iphones

So if I'm part of a Family Plan, will the whole discount be taken away if I'm the only one with an iPhone or will the discount still be available to the other members of my family?

Thanks!

I activated mine on a family plan and I had to add a $20 data plan. Everything else stayed the same.

workout

can one workout with the iphone attached to your arm as one would with a ipod? i know it's not ideal to run with an ipod, but i've never had any issues with mine.

The at&t store had armband/workout carriers available for them, so it seems reasonable. I'll probably keep my shuffle clip for running, though, just for the weight difference.

Ha ha this is too easy to debunk. Safari can't even render the full CSS standard. Firefox and IE can't either, but the newest version of Opera does the best and I believe the current beta build can fully render all CSS standards. So which browsers have better standards compatibility? As far as rendering speed goes I don't buy Apples claims. On top of this I work with more than 3 different operating systems on almost a daily basis. Which two browsers can be found on all OSes? Firefox and Opera.

What about blocking ads? What about 3rd party plug-ins? Firefox supports all of these, and Safari doesn't.

I realize this stuff (iChat, maybe finder, etc) with come with a software update, but look how long it took to give the Youtube update to AppleTV owners! There was already a community hack that worked out there.

Sprint porting

how is sprint handling porting numbers over to at&t? you just enter your number and go? does it take a while?

cant wait to get mine!

I ported from Sprint in under 15 minutes. No problems what so ever. My wife's port was taking longer, possibly because her's was registered as a corporate account. Placed and received calls right away. Truly AWESOME!
