can one workout with the iphone attached to your arm as one would with a ipod? i know it's not ideal to run with an ipod, but i've never had any issues with mine.

I will NOT buy until winter!

I have to keep saying that in the hopes of keeping my willpower :)

These great reviews are not helping me any! I think I'd better leave my credit card at home when I check out the iPhones on display tomorrow.

Seriously if you are going to demo and don't want to buy it... don't go. This thing will be a thorn in your side until you finally buy one. Unless of course you have some sort of superhuman will power! :D

Working out

While I wouldn't recommend it, due to the cost of this thing (a Nano would be a much better option plus you can get the Nike+), BUT it uses flash memory so jostling it wouldn't affect it like a iPod with a HDD.

nace, you are the man. excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does that mean? thanks.

Assuming you're talking about the nac part... its Nothing fancy... just the anagram for my religion... New Apostolic Church (nak.org - German/Swiss HQ)... and I'm an engineer so nac engineer... :)

Realizing that's off topic... perhaps your talking about the statement about the drive...

A HDD (Hard disk drive) has platters and needles similar to a record player. There is a memory caching happening on a normal iPod so you have some time before missed reads of the platter causes skips... but flash is solid state (no moving parts) so as long as there is electricity going to it it is accessible.

Iphone -wtf

Iphone has weak wifi performance. 800k

MY Cable modem is much faster than that.

Also wtf is up with push e-mail

I signed up with yahoo, but mail only comes when I open mail, then click on each folder.

It ain't pushing jack. Did I do something wrong? setting up yahoo? I dont see any options to push in the yahoo mail options.

heh i would second this. :)

booting up my blackberry after playing with this thing for a few hours really made the contrast obvious. amazing.
now the BB is perhaps better in certain applications but damn ... for a personal phone it felt suffocating after the new toy.

sure it has some minor issues but it's surpassed my expectations and i was quite tired of the hype.

The touch UI is UNBELIEVABLE!

OK, so the truth is I really was a skeptic. I only got roped into this because my buddy was willing to stand in line for 8 hours at the Apple store, and let me show up at the last minute to buy a phone with him - that I was pretty much figuring I'd resell at markup tomorrow.

But, no... I'm already completely hooked. Sure, the screen is gorgeous and the maps are unreal, touch-typing is actually practical, the camera's decent, and it's not a half-bad phone, either. More than anything, though, it's the touch screen and the way it lets you slide, scroll, zoom... unlike any digital device I've ever used, it's just unbelievable. It's just so... ANALOG! You HAVE to try it to understand.

Here's how bad I'm hooked: if you go through Settings > About you can get to the absurdly long Legal listing - seriously, it's like 50 pages of text - but just flicking your finger makes it scroll by as if it were on some rolling wheel. It'll slow down if you let it, or you can just keep scrolling... I must have wasted half an hour just playing with the stupid text, I find it addictive.

I can't wait to get all my album covers loaded just so I can flip through them...

same time it comes to Germany I expect :(

Still look on the bright side, the folks in the US of A can debug the phones and software so we in the EU get better ones :D

My sentiments exactly :D and around that time the second revision of the iPhone should emerge.

Here in Kuwait and the middle east region in general we follow the european market, where a cellphone contract with the provider is for the service only and without any commitments to hardware purchases.

So we look forward for iPhones with 3G capabilities, additional memory slots, dual cameras - iChat integration anyone? Still, it could take some time, even without considering certification procedure: remember how long it took the iPod mini to ship worldwide back in '04?

So, congratulations to all you new iPhoners, and we hope to join you soon - in a matter of months

:) OK, a dumb and somewhat out of context question / observation: how many units did they sell during the first evening? Apple will probably announce a figure early next week, but lets say about 2000 outlets, each stocking an average of 50 units (a conservative estimate?) = 100,000 units during 6 hours. This translates to roughly 5 activations each second. Hmmm ... Patience is a virtue ;)

How's the coverage out there in CO? I will be going to Estes Park on vacation next month and am hoping the phone MIGHT still work...

So far, excellent.

I came form VZW where, at my house, I'd get 2 bars - at best.
After activation, I have all bars. So, I'm very happy.

Granted, I've only had this thing activated now for about 3 hours (let it charge while I was at some late eve function). I'll pop in periodically with reports.

Estes Park is beautiful. Amongst other nooks & crannies of this fine state.

This thing is bad ass. I just can not stop. I have been emailing and SMSing people with ooooh look I got my iPhone. I was really surprised with how well it seems to perform, everything is very fluid. I am really glad I waiting half the day for this baby.

Picked up mine and got it home about 2.5 hours ago. Been messing with it ever since. I had to connect it to my MBP in before starting iTunes for it to recognize the phone. But once it did, activating it was just like the Tour showed and took only about 5 minutes. I had AT&T already so all it did was switch from my old phone (Sony Ericsson P910) to my new iPhone.

Like everyone else has said, the phone and everything about it rocks. The keyboard will take a bit to get down, but I'm already better at than that stupid stylus on the SE. Everything about this phone is far and away better than my old P910.

About the only grief I had was getting one of my email accounts configured. It synced my personal IMAP server settings just fine. But I have my business email going through Google Apps. It seemed to recognize it as a Gmail account, but for some odd reason it would not connect to the server. I kept getting username and password errors. And because it recognized it as a Gmail account I could not go into the server settings and change anything. So I ended up deleting that account. And creating an "Other" account with all the proper settings. Now it works just fine. Well, almost. But I think the issue I am running into now has more to do with Gmail than with iPhone, so I wont go into details on that.

Other than that it's an AWESOME phone. I've been waiting for a phone like this for years. None of the other phone manufacturers or carriers seemed to really give a crap about what real people wanted in a phone. Now Apple did it right the very first time at bat. I can't wait to see what the future of Apple's involvement in the mobile market will hold.

I have a question. I know once you activate the phone by signing up with AT&T all the features are unlocked. Now, will the features continue to be in working order if your services are terminated.

I live in Alaska, the only state that AT&T will not allow to have iPhones. The phone will work up here, but after 4 months of use, AT&T will terminate my services.

I could wait until the phone finally comes up here, but with Alaska's current track record with new cellphones, that could take decades.

All I want is the ipod, video playback, and the internet browser. The phone isn't as important to me since no one really calls me anyway, so I can survive with my current cellphone until service is finally available up here.

Could someone please test out the phone to see if the features of the iphone still work with a different sim card in it or no sim card at all? I just need to see what happens if there is no service for the phone.

Just FYI

Going on nearly 9 hours since I attempted activation, nothing yet, and the phone's still locked. I had a # to port from T-mobile. The phone is still completely and entirely useless, but at least I am lucky enough to own one;)

Going to bed, I give up. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to play, lol.

Off the charts

Bought my 8GB iPhone at the Apple Store after two failed attempts to find one at an AT&T store. The line through Apple was far more efficient; wish I had gone there first.

After 2 hours of use, some observations & impressions:

1. Activation took no more than 2 minutes.

2. Bluetooth pairs with BMW iDrive and downloads the address book. If you have 2004 or 2005 firmware in your BMW you may need a firmware upgrade. This has nothing to do with iPhone, but with BMW's implementation of the Bluetooth Handsfree protocol.

3. Typing on the keyboard in portrait orientation is both straightforward and surprisingly fast. Auto-correct helps, but I feel my fingers and thumbs will learn the layout quickly. This is a non-issue.

4. iPod sound quality is excellent, ranking up there with the original iPod shuffle (which was arguably the best-sounding iPod ever made).

5. Multi-touch is very well implemented for scrolling, zooming, and sliding.

6. The only negative I've found so far is the difference in data speed between a WiFi connection and EDGE. It's easy to switch between them and obviously easy to notice the difference.

7. It appears to be considerably more scratch resistant. I've got an Incase sleeve for the back side anyway, but it's made of more durable materials.

From first impressions I have to join the chorus of thrilled voices. This thing is outstanding in just about every way. I was concerned about the price and lack of subsidy, but this thing is worth it. The Moto RAZR was approximately the same price when it debuted, and that's a toy in comparison.

No, If you look on the back of the box you will see it says that the 2 year contract is required even to use the ipod portion.
with out a contract only 911 will work

Just got mine at the St. Louis Galaria, walked right in at about 11:30pm walked up to a mac sales agent and asked for an 8gb iPhone and in less than 5 Min I walked out of the store with one!!!!!

Take your CC.
You'll only be wasting precious fuel driving back home to get your CC and then back to the Apple Store once you see one in the flesh.

If you truly want to wait until winter, move out of the US. ;)

It's amazing.

iTunes tabs

I'm pretty sure this is a feature. On apple.com/iphone, the new "finger tips" videos they posted today showed one that had "assign a ringtone" where I thought they were assigning a specific ringtone to a specific contact. You might head over there & make sure this is right, but I think it is.

can someone tell me what the extra 2 tabs are in itunes then i can't seem to find it anywhere!

I don't know about walt and pouges' complaints of having to spend a week getting used to the keyboard. I'm running pretty solid with little errors in just 8 hours of intermittent use...

anyhoo I got mine and I'm incredibly not disappointed. It pretty much lives up to all of my expectations.

I also went out to dinner and got to be that a$$hole with the first iphone.
aside from being the dummy that spent $600 on a phone, everyone wanted to see it.:D

yea can a few people chuck in some links or summing?? i just wanna make sure that when it comes out in 2008 here i can make the investment

in 2008, you'll most likely have a much more refined version than we do.

If I wasn't such a stupid fanboy I would have waited.
