12:21 - waited in line at NYC 57th Street Store
6:23 - bought 2 iPhones
7:41 - attempted to activate
7:53 - got the "takes longer than expected messge"
8:53 - called the AT&T support line - all I got was "it could take up to 24 hrs."
9:21 - steak, mashed potatoes and a bottle of wine with wife
11:21 - called AT&T support again - this time on phone for 32 minutes, helpful, but did not solve problem. Still waiting for verification email
1:24 am - Playing with slider button to call 911 gets boring
1:26 - check out posts. I'm not the only one with issues. But still pissed!
1:32 - drag iTunes playslists to iPone in iTunes library and am now "enjoying" my iPhone by listening to tracks with the new earbuds and clicking for pause and FFWD button on the earbud mouthpiece
2:38am Still waiting.... with everyone else.

BOOOO! waiting in line was a blast compared to this!

June 29th will be forever remembered as a roller coaster ride.... with the ride coming to a schreaching hault mid-way through. C'mon Steve - fix this!

so the iphone syncs to ical? i would rather not have to type it into both....

Correct. It's seamless. Like .Mac if you have that... Typical Apple... It just works.

To those having activation issues the engineer in me can't help but wonder (not knowing mind you just guessing) that if you turn you existing phone off and reset your iPhone does that fix the problem? Just wondering. My existing phone was on when the iPhone activated and actually was still working UNTIL I shut it down permanently.

Sweet, you can listen to music before it activates? Im going to try that now. Thanks

It takes a real quality person to brag about screwing-over his fellow citizens. You are a real winner...of the daily jerk-off award (not that I am calling you names). :p

This is something I noticed about the crowds at WWDC.

There were several sessions I wanted to make sure I didn't miss, so I'd get there well ahead of the starting time only to watch dozens of people flat out cut in front of the whole line as soon as the doors opened. Friggin' jackasses.

(And, yes, they were just regular attendees and not press or anything like that.)

Does the iPhone need to be plugged into my Mac to activate or is it over the phone line?

i wish it were that simple. normally an att employee has to set a few little things up with the imei and new sim card being paired together. The woman from att i talked to said its apple not them but i highly doubt that.

The touch UI is UNBELIEVABLE!

OK, so the truth is I really was a skeptic. I only got roped into this because my buddy was willing to stand in line for 8 hours at the Apple store, and let me show up at the last minute to buy a phone with him - that I was pretty much figuring I'd resell at markup tomorrow.

But, no... I'm already completely hooked. Sure, the screen is gorgeous and the maps are unreal, touch-typing is actually practical, the camera's decent, and it's not a half-bad phone, either. More than anything, though, it's the touch screen and the way it lets you slide, scroll, zoom... unlike any digital device I've ever used, it's just unbelievable. It's just so... ANALOG! You HAVE to try it to understand.

Here's how bad I'm hooked: if you go through Settings > About you can get to the absurdly long Legal listing - seriously, it's like 50 pages of text - but just flicking your finger makes it scroll by as if it were on some rolling wheel. It'll slow down if you let it, or you can just keep scrolling... I must have wasted half an hour just playing with the stupid text, I find it addictive.

I can't wait to get all my album covers loaded just so I can flip through them...

The general impression from what I can see is there are activation issues, and a few reports of broken 'keys' - outside of that, its universal praise.

Jobs wont be too happy about AT&T and the activation problems. Hopefully they are resolved quickly.

Can you use GOogle Docs on it?

Just wondering if you can use google docs on it and work on a document? That would be raelly useful for me?

Thanks

Well if an actual person has to do this there is the reason why some are experiencing delays... ughh... I cringe to think of how tired those employees are... I got the impression from the walk though though that this was being automated on the back end as the information was sent through iTunes. if the scripts went haywire and this is being done by hand... yikes! Though this is all speculation on my part.

Yes it works with docs... sort of... it loads the application BUT then goggle tells you it doesn't work with safari... but then it does... go figure.

So it does load the doc/spreadsheet but warns you about Safari incompatibility... although checking yes takes you into the doc and it seems to work.

Google calendar works too but seems to be loading in the Mobile List view... maybe a setting on my side though...

it seems like everything going haywire might be what happened. I've noticed a few people who called earlier all said wait times of an hour or two to six hours now all the way to 24...I just hope when i wake up in the morning my phone is activated.

I still can't believe I'm now posting and surfing exclusively from my phone. And I have to also add that my set up only took 5 mins from power up to fully functional. This is the most exciting Apple user experience from start to finish. It is actually better than the hype.

nope...doesn't work. my existing phone has been off for quite a while...dead battery :)

I will NOT buy until winter!

I have to keep saying that in the hopes of keeping my willpower :)

These great reviews are not helping me any! I think I'd better leave my credit card at home when I check out the iPhones on display tomorrow.

Scoble: The iPhone blows away my Nokia N95 in almost every area that normal people care about. I still will miss its camera, though

JasonCalacanis I am playing with iphone right now. It is amazing. Like stunning.

Also... of note...

Opened a few messages with xls spreadsheets and word docs... the excel spreadsheet fields overlaped... yuck. But its opening them in a quasi app. the word doc seemed to open fine... PDFs open great though...
