****, when is this thing coming to SWITZERLAND??????? COME ON!!!!!!!!!! GO APPLE GO! BANZAI!!!

same time it comes to Germany I expect :(

Still look on the bright side, the folks in the US of A can debug the phones and software so we in the EU get better ones :D

Got to my apple store in jacksonville, fl at 12:30pm. Was #44. Line last time I walked behind the building must of been about 300 deep. They let us in about 20 at a time. Was a cool experience. Probably about 25 apple employees all cheering at the top of their lungs for every batch of people they let in. Got the impression they had a lot of stock. Made my purchase and got the hell out of dodge. Was a zoo. Still awaiting activation. =(

I just want to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the keyboard. I find I can type at LEAST three times as fast as I could on my (now former :D) Motorola PEBL!

I thought it was supposed to automatically capitalize the first letter of a sentence.

Yeah, but maybe only for SMS. If Safari is just like our version, then text input is not automatically corrected for capitalization.

Can someone put up pictures of all the activation screens? Just curious what activation's like.

im an existing customer and got home around 6:40. it took me maybe 2 minutes from the time i plugged it in to finish before i saw the iPhone say "activated"

but sorry, no screens.

You can view the activation process (which takes place through iTunes 7.3) on Apple's Activation & Sync Video.

MacRumors provides a thread for iPhone photos; you may eventually find screengrabs of the Activation Notice displayed when first turning the phone on there.

I waited in line for 29 MINUTES and GOT AN iPHONE!!!

Hahaha. Oh, my god. Hahahaha. I feel so bad for all those sucks who waited days in line and camped out. Especially that guy sitting at the Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan since Monday at 5AM. I showed up at the Apple Store in Tampa, FL at 5:35PM today and had my hands on the iPhone 29 minutes later. Bearing, I bull-shited my way to the front of the line bypassing 200 people. Good stuff! :)

It was pretty cool and exciting with all the news cameras there and all the employees cheering and clapping when they opened at 6PM. They counted down from 20 seconds and it was like I was in NYC waiting for the ball to drop. Hah! Very fun.

Normally the store operates with about 10 employees. Today they had over 45 employees working in the store.

I am not sure if this was known or not, but in the GOOGLE MAPS application, there is MAP, SATELLITE, and LIST. LIST is good if you are in an area that has slow EDGE and you can get turn by turn directions without loading all the maps.

First impressions:

I had cingular already and it took about 3 minutes total from putting it into the dock to activating it. I had to forego my business discount, but I figure I can try to get that back later.

Sync of email/contacts and music and videos is simple and quick.

Voice: I had a cingular 8125 smartphone before and this thing is so much clearer voice...and it's clear on me having only 1 bar.

Screen: Amazing. Pinch is quick and very responsive.

Touch Screen: Awesome except I am fudging it a bit. Admittedly I am going fast like they say, but I guess it needs to learn. Fixing is simple however. I am typing at around 50%-60% speed of my touch keypad on the Cingular with equal mistakes.

Email: Nice. PDf attachments open lightning fast.

however...I CAN'T access YOUTUBE. keeps saying it can't connect. Anyone else?

I just activated two iPhones on a new ATT account, family plan. It took 10 minutes.... Awesome performance Apple and ATT!!

I'm browsing on a WiFi network at a local coffee shop and the performance is amazing.

What a beautifully crafted device. More later.

I'm still getting mine activated... Have to talk to Sprint first.

Looks NICE!

Waited in the line for 45 minutes. got there 30 before 6, waited till 15 after 6 to be let in.

How long does the phone take to turn on and off?

My Samsung BlackJack takes 48 seconds to turn on and finish connecting to the cellphone network and 7 seconds to turn off.

. The message i get:

We're sorry AT&T has determined that your account (an existing customer) cannot be used with this iPhone

If you are a business customer visit AT&T Business Center. Otherwise, please call 1-877-419-45xx. To complete this activation you may also create a new AT&T account.
Click continue to proceed.

Been on the phone with AT&T activation support for almost two hours trying to get beyond the third activation screen.

Are you a business customer or do you have a business account? or is it just screwed up?

i stood in line for 6 hours ... got one of the last two 8 gigs at the store.

this phone is better than i expected. the typing can be tricky but i can tell i'll improve. edge is slow. wifi is fast. the phone is quality in look/feel

oh and i activated at 6:50 EST and it was a breeze. everything went super smooth.... so far the only -ve is edge but it is tolerable. really impressed with the screen.

it's so obvious to me that this phone will eventually be a major hit once they tighten a few things up. this is really seminal. nice job apple.

Ah, i was just wondering about this. I have a %20 business discount and i started to wonder if it would not let me set up because of that. Did you have to check a box or did you get a message saying you could not use the discount?

Just wondering if anyone who has an iPhone could post whether or not there is a ringtone tab in iTunes like people previously thought there might be? If so what's in it?

I am real happy for your guys. This is another leap for Apple to prove its dominance in the computing and design world.

I am an expat, currently living / working in Malaysia - and based on the subnormal internet service here + when the iPhone ever reaches us (maybe version 2.0 or 3) = we are going to get such a slow internet connection and at allocated locations only. Well, it'll be limited. At least we can still use the phone to chat, play games, and music.

Expat too, but in Switzerland...gonna have to wait for some months as well...but I second your words...Apple is just gonna BLOW the socks off its competitors...it's definitely the third leg in Apple's chair...computers with at least 10% of the market share, iPods with at least 70% and the iPhone with easily the top spot in the smartphone market...in less than 1 year, trust me.

APPLE RULES!

When someone calls you from a different area code does it show where they're calling from (ex. state name or city name, state name)? I know Sprint has a feature like that.

I think that's a phone-specific feature (my A900 shows the state when someone calls). As for whether the iPhone has it, I haven't a clue.

Kernel Error...

haven't read all posts yet... after installing, during restart, my MBP had a kernel error.

Things seem to be ok after second restart, but will check error log and post more later.

It tells you that you can't get it and asks you to agree basically. I don't know how this will shake out...if you don't get the 20% for the whole thing or just the Data. ATandT is of course slammed right now so I can't access it to see.

so far all I can say about my 8gb is WOW. And all I can do is :D

Thank you :apple: I now have a real phone

Ok ihave had mine for 2.5 hours now..

here is what I think
Keyboard: ROCKS!!! i a, already using both thumbs and not making many mistakes
Audio: SOUNDS CLEAR and good. I love how it goes quiet when I call or sms comes in

setup was a breeze did not take very long at all

Google maps is better then any version I have used prior

Mail was automatically setup from .mac

youtube is fun but kinda useless but then again i never really watched it.

I was able to get it on my wireless without any issues

EDGE is just fine for a mobile device. It did try to use my wireless when it saw it. The first time i tried to get on youtube it searched for wireless first

safir is coool.. works great...

All in all i give it a TWO thumbs up!!!!!

i will be going to a wedding in a few and will play with it on edge and let you know...
