Just under 2 hours and still awaiting activation email. Would love to know why some were able to activate in under 3 minutes and i'm still sitting here with my thumb up my ass.

I'm an existing AT&T customer (old cingular). Keeping same plan, just opting for data plan. Told me during sign up any discounts we previously had no longer apply. Had to agree to that fact.

If anyone gets an email in a similar situation, would love to hear about it.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, even got the same "discounts" message. It's been 1.5 hours for me and no email yet! :(

Just Did A Speed Test

same here. I wonder if i can do a decent speed test...

I just did the speed test on cnet.com and it came back with 166.5 - so a bit over 3's as fast as the fastest dial up. I'd say after browsing a bit with it it's very tolerable. Yahoo loads into usable fashion in about 5 seconds (full load takes a while - I have no idea what it's trying to load).

To steal McDonalds theme here - I'm Lovin' It!!

:)

I'm in South Fort Worth, tx just fyi for the speed test...

I've called AT&T three times, and gotten three different stories: first, wait 30-60 minutes. Next, they said somebody (an actual human) was currently activating my account, so I should expect it to be ready in 10 minutes or so. The last time I called, the woman said "a few hours, definitely within 24 hours."

They are confused, don't appear to know anything about the iPhone, everything is swamped.... I'm sure it will work out by tomorrow, but it's frustrating nevertheless.

I'm switching from Verizon, btw.

it's taken me this long to come back to MacRumors. last time I visited was November 11, 2005.

I got about 2 1/2 hours to go for me to see this thing out. Since I live in Maui, HI. I'll let you guys know how Edge does on a rock in the middle of the ocean.

I just got off the Phone with AT&T, evidently it is a wide-spread issue. She said to wait 6 hours from when you tried to activate:eek: and we should be able to utilize our phones, finally. Mine is still locked as well. The activations are bottlenecked. You think they'd have thought of this.......

You wait 6+ months for an iPhone but then can't wait another minute/hour/day to have it activated? Some of you new iPhone whiners are pathetic. Go out for a walk, enjoy some music, pet your dog, call a friend... no wait, scratch this last one. Whatever... just take a deep breath and be glad you finally have that thing you covet finally in your hands. By this time next week, ya'll will be on this forum complaining about something else. Go figure.

Regarding MEEBO...

I was able to log into meebo but when I open up a chat with someone, I cannot figure out how to send a message. Because you need to hit enter to send a message, and I can't figure out how to do that.

Er, try touching the SEND button to the right of the text entry box.

via iPhone

I'm writing this from my iPhone.

It is amazing. Keyboard in landscape mode is lightening fast.
EDGE is faster than the reviews made it out to be (I'm in MN).
the phone does heat up a bit, but it is not bad at all.
the screen will get smudged after a call and you will want to wipe it after every use.
the activation for me (I signed up for service a few hours before I got the phone with an auth. dealer and then did the existing customer option) took about 42 sec (yes i timed it).
the volume and sleep btns are very useful and someone called me in the middle of writing this and iPhone handled it just as advertised.

In the hour that I have used the phone I been very impressed and think it is with the money (8 gig vets).
:D

Favorite features so far - live traffic reports on google maps and if you browse a webpage with a phone number, you can double click the number to call. :)

Got my phone at the Tucker, GA store near Atlanta, arrived ~4:30 to be #25-30ish in line.

I'm not porting for a while, so it took about 1 and a half minutes to activate (no lie) and maybe ten to sync. So, about 11 minutes from start to finish for me. I'll port next week.

Iphone keyboard

simply amazing!

That is what I have to say about the wonderful keyboard. I am impressed with the speed that I am typing with.

Activation email

Still waiting for that email (3 hours now). Currently on the second call to AT&T. They've really been on the ball with call response at least. I'm told that the number ported from Verizon successfully and that they consider the number activated, but that the information is apparently not transferring to iTunes. Waiting on hold with an AT&T rep now to talk to Apple. We'll see. Fingers crossed.

Keyboard - Caps Lock

This phone is truly amazing. I've bought many gadgets over the years and I can honestly say I've never been this excited about a device.

I was 3rd in line at the AT&T Store in Louisville, KY. I was out of the store by 6:15, and by 6:55 my phone was activated and able to make calls.

So far I'm very please with the Internet Speed/Functionality. Edge seems fast enough, and Wifi rocks!

My only complaint so far is that is that it's difficult to enter case sensitive passwords with the Keyboard. It doesn't appear to show you the case when you type so it was frustrating to enter my WPA2 Password. Also the Settings > Enable Caps Lock doesn't appear to be working (could just be me doing something stupid). Also, the transmitter on this thing appears to be very strong. My PC speakers go nuts every couple of minutes when the iPhone is near. My SLVR didn't do this.

i'm in business.. i just now received the activation email.. took 2.5 hours since i started the setup process. time to PLAY!

I would advise anyone needing to port to just get a temporary number and port next week when the madness has died down.

god i needed something from my newly old blackberry ... ewwwwwwww
so glad i'm gone ... at least with my personal phone.

so happy so far :D :apple:

After reading psts like this i have to say I am glad that I ported my number to AT&T two days ago.

i demoed it at my local apple store and when i rotated, the screen stayed in the vertical position. is there anyone having problems with turning it?

What is a "Sim Card"? What does "Sim" stand for?

Sorry for my ignorance. Can anyone tell me what a "Sim Card" is? My current cellphone doesn't have any card. Is this a memory card, like an SD memory card?

Now waiting for an Apple product specialist. The first contact said, "Things are crazy." Shocking. :)

At least some people are starting to get the activation emails. I have hope!
