Are you referring to the Surface Duo? That was two separate connected screens with a clear physical border down the middle. No crease, but a constant divider in the middle that's ever present and obvious like the notch/pill. Imagine watching a video or movie with that bar in the middle, it would be too distracting.

The crease is not noticeable on a foldable because the brightness overcomes the reflections from the crease, unless you're tilting it at certain angles. When viewing the screen directly, as you normally do on a phone, the crease blends away. And you can still use a foldable when it's closed, like a slab phone there's no crease on the cover screen.

I was bummed when that failed to gain traction.

Really? That's cool. I kind of wish that Apple would make an iPhone "Duo" with all glass screens, and just a very small gap between them. But, I guess everyone has their preferences
🙂
I genuinely do not understand this.
I mean, I totally understand if you’re someone who just cannot handle a crease. People have their different tolerances, whatever, I can get that.
I do not understand the people who would prefer a dual screen on the inside, with a big gap between the displays where there is absolutely no pixels because there’s nothing there. Is that really better than a crease?
Plus if you wanna talk about durability, I feel like if there were two separate screens, it would be so easy for tons of gunk and junk to get caught between them and just… No. No, no, no. That’s worse in every way.

Obviously there will be a Crease. When they mean creaseless, it means it's not visible when in use. Wireless Chargers still require to be connected to a Power Source. It's Wireless in the Sense you don't have a phone connected to a Wire.
Uh what do you mean to say with this post? That the Fold will have MagSafe? I hope so! 🤭😉

Agreed. The Surface Duo and Duo2 had great promise but were hindered by battery life, performance issues, and the software lacked refinement to help the device shine.

I use my foldables for both productivity and pleasure and that physical divider (Duo) and see-through slit (Duo2) is more distracting than a crease, not to mention obscures content and text at the midline. It is cool that the Duo screen is reversible but that forces you to unfold the phone just to use it, lest you fully reverse it and keep both displays exposed at all times. I much prefer current foldable designs with a cover screen. But I credit Microsoft for trying something new back then and influencing future foldable designs, such as the Passport-style Pixel Fold and the reversible screen of the Huawei Mate XT.

I feel like Apple has started making some pretty obvious compromises in both design and the gimmick department. It sometimes feels like they’re prioritizing novelty and things that look impressive in a keynote over what actually makes the product better to use. Apple’s design philosophy used to feel very deliberate, with almost every element serving a clear purpose. Lately, I’m not always sure that’s still the case.
As for me, I look forward to the fold iPhone. It serves two purposes. Want as a mini iPad when I’m out and about, especially when I’m taking people to the doctors or dentist and have to wait. I would also like to use it as a consumption product and the other, of course, is as a phone, texting, reading, etc. not anywhere near a gimmick, especially the smaller size.

If $2,500 is the starting price, it'll be close to $3,000 with more memory. The Fold maxes out at $2,500. I'm disgusted that they're going to call it the Ultra. Touch ID, no telephoto lens. That's not ultra to me. The Z Fold looks good. But making that work with Apple's ecosystem would be quite a challenge.

Regardless of benefit, there are people who already own MBP's and pretty much anything else they want, so they will evaluate 'value' with a different perspective than some.
Agree. But there needs to be a decent value proposition to be “worth it”, even for the have-it-alls. Case in point: Vision Pro. I don’t assume it will be as big of a dud, but also, the last iPhone redesign (Air) did not go over well either: pay more money for less phone. What will the Ultra/Fold bring, except for a foldable screen? Better cameras, battery, iOS+iPadOS? Or just the screen for 2000-2500 dollars? That is going to be a hard sell I think. Even with the device having an Apple logo.

I don't think there are many people who expect 100% no crease on a foldable device.

An accepted part of owning one.
Methinks that this statement will come back to bite you!
Imho there will be a multitude of buyers who will be extremely dissatisfied on observing a centre crease on the iPhone Fold during normal use. Let's revisit this topic one year after the phone has been launched........

I don’t think it’s going to be called Ultra. I think they’ll probably come up with a completely new name for it. No one expected the MacBook Neo name either.

If they are like samsung, you won't be able to purchase the protection on it. They know the screens are extremely fragile. I have seen so many folding phones come back to the store with the inner screen damaged.
Somehow I doubt Apple’s not going to allow applecare on their new flagship phone

I was in a Best Buy yesterday and played with the Fold 8. All I can say is WOW. It’s amazing. Apple fold will be identical display as Samsung makes the part for Apple. This aspect ratio is the way.
I wish this particular piece of misinformation would just die already. Just because apple displays are manufactured by Samsung does not mean they are identical to what goes in Samsung phones. Thats not how product manufacturing works at all.

Also if I end up with the folding iPhone that is going to make my applecare one plan seem much better price wise.

People keep acting like the iPhone Fold is somehow going to eliminate the crease entirely.

It won’t.

There will be a crease. Maybe it’ll be smaller than what we’ve seen on other foldables. Maybe it’ll be harder to notice in normal use. But there is no magic display technology that completely bypasses the physics of repeatedly bending a screen.

That’s why I still struggle with the idea of $2,500 device that has a visible and/or tangible crease running through the middle of the display. At that price, I expect a screen that feels uncompromisingly premium, not one with a built-in reminder that it’s folding.

The best part will come after launch. As soon as the first units arrive, MacRumors will be flooded with threads of people taking photos from every possible angle, under every lighting condition imaginable, trying to prove that the crease either exists or doesn’t.

“Can’t see it in normal use.”

“Look at it under a flashlight.”

“I can feel it.”

“Mine doesn’t have it.”

“It’s only visible at certain angles.”

We’re about to witness CreaseGate.

Just promise not to delete this when the phone comes out, ok?

The most indestructible piece of consumer electronics I have witnessed in the 21st Century is the Nintendo DS.

A customer bought one back into my old job that looked like it had been ran over by a truck. One hinge had broken and the wires were all loose but it damn well still worked! (Amazingly she got it replaced. Y Nintendo because it developed a separate fault!)

Dual screens really would be more durable than a folding one because the inside can be glass, or even a thick plastic.

No I mean it will be visible when in use.

Latest Samsung Folds already have a crease that is almost invisible in regular use. I mean, sure, you can see it, but whether it can be considered visible or invisible will come down to personal preference and how hard you're looking for it. And also, depends on the use. I watched a movie on a Fold, it was not noticeable. But when I was examining the home screen more closely, I could see it. So depends what you mean. When you say "in use", do you mean "I will technically be using it, but what I'll be really doing is looking at it at an angle under a light from 4cm away"?

I don't know that I would say no where near, it is definitely smaller but it is well within the range of being a replacement for the ipad mini.
Which iPad mini is that? The foldable iPhone inner screen is rumored to be between 7.6-7.8". Early iPad Minis were 7.9", so very close indeed, whereas newer iPad Minis grew to 8.3". Regardless, the foldable iPhone can absolutely take the place of an iPad Mini.

Completely agree.
All Samsung is for Apple is a manufacturing partner. They will be manufacturing the displays.
But in terms of the display itself, everything will be set by Apple. The materials used, the design, the aspect ratio, the resolution, the hinge, the phones design itself, all of that will be Apple top to bottom.
It’s like how the iPhone X used an OLED display produced by Samsung, but it looked absolutely nothing like any of the Samsung phones on the market at the time. While they were all standard 1440P or 1080P displays, Apple’s had an absolutely bizarre resolution, a notch at the top of the display, and for the time a wacky aspect ratio. All that came from Apple, all Samsung did was the manufacturing process. As far as I know, they had absolutely no say in the design, just like this fold.
The Galaxy fold 8 will be similar to the folding iPhone. Absolutely no doubt about that, but anyone who’s saying that they will basically be identical, that will not be the case.
Let’s not forget that Apple has reportedly come up with some insane liquid metal and titanium blend hinge that Samsung is absolutely not using in any of their current flagships, because Apple owns tons and tons of patents for liquid metal. As far as we know, maybe they have solved the crease, or at least solved it as much as it can be solved.

I am old enough now to appreciate something built to be functional and practical, rather than beautiful and troublesome. Even it does have a crease I do not mind. My goal for purchasing the iPhone Ultra is to consolidate my iPhone and iPad Mini use at home so that over time I have better battery results several years down the line.

Right now my Mini takes the brunt of the charge cycles of my day to day device use since it is my most "general" device.

The Ultra will at least let me not worry about keeping my phone around me, which, sometimes, is a hassle when I don't have pockets.
I'm still loving my iPhone Air and iPad mini. But the thought of a device that does both well sure sounds nice.

I don't get OPs comments. We keep hearing manufacturers claiming edge-to-edge screens, and there's still an ever diminishing bezel.

We will see. It will cost them alot of money if they do. Flexable displays crack and wear very quickly. I don't think apple will lose their profit margins over a bendy iPhone. either that it will be priced higher than the AVP.

My Fold6 inner display held up remarkably well after 18 months of unfolding/folding at least 20x a day. I estimate it was 10,000 open/close cycles during the time I had it. The Fold6 was rated for 200,000 folding actions so I wasn't remotely close to the limit.

The Fold7 is certified to withstand 500,000 folding cycles, good for 10 years at a rate of 100 folds per day. I think today's foldable screens will hold up just fine to normal daily use.
