Other iPhone Fold Will Have a Crease

It is funny to see how people change mind when Apple does something.

Foldables were gimmick, nobody wanted to see a crease, they were too expensive, now that Apple is about to release one everyone seems to want one.

Well they will market it as "Magic crease" and sell it as a feature.

Do you mean a better version of the now-discontinued Microsoft Surface Duo folding phone and its second generation the Surface Duo 2 ("Duo 2" seems like an odd or fun name, depending), that Microsoft discontinued in 2023 or 2024? Apparently they stopped making it for a variety of reasons, including being pretty poorly executed and overpriced, and because Microsoft cut experimental products like this at the time to save some money.

Yes, exactly. I'm sure with the right people, a product such as this could be made to be excellent.

Latest Samsung Folds already have a crease that is almost invisible in regular use. I mean, sure, you can see it, but whether it can be considered visible or invisible will come down to personal preference and how hard you're looking for it. And also, depends on the use. I watched a movie on a Fold, it was not noticeable. But when I was examining the home screen more closely, I could see it. So depends what you mean. When you say "in use", do you mean "I will technically be using it, but what I'll be really doing is looking at it at an angle under a light from 4cm away"?

What I mean is that when using the phone, the crease will inevitably be visible from time to time, and if someone looks for it, they’ll definitely find it.

Macrumors made a video about the samsung fold and he talks about the crease and how you can't feel it (go to about 8:43 or the chapter "The Display Crease"). Samsung did a very good job with the crease so Apple will probably do just fine.

In that same video, Dan states "I don't really feel the crease at all. It's barely noticeable." (10:06).

Obsessing over the slight crease ignores the rest of the story and how Dan describes the Fold8 as "this form factor is honestly close to perfect in how I actually would like to use a phone" (1:50). That is pretty high praise for a Samsung phone on MacRumors and builds greater anticipation for the foldable iPhone. I don't think a minimal crease is going to hold people back. The price might.

Then again, we're talking about the Apple base. Despite initial sticker shock there will be hordes of Apple faithful eager to own the ultimate iPhone.

My concern on the Ultra is how durable the folding screen will be? Will it scratch easier? I have no experience with folding phones so this is what I am looking at since I doubt you can put a screen protector onto a folding screen.

My Fold6 inner display held up remarkably well after 18 months of unfolding/folding at least 20x a day. I estimate it was 10,000 open/close cycles during the time I had it. The Fold6 was rated for 200,000 folding actions so I wasn't remotely close to the limit.

The Fold7 is certified to withstand 500,000 folding cycles, good for 10 years at a rate of 100 folds per day. I think today's foldable screens will hold up just fine to normal daily use.

Just because it's "certified" to withstand it does not mean it will. I work in the industry and I have seen many many folds come back to the store with failed screens. Always in the crease where they fold. The material used scratches extremely easily as well.

Until the Ultra actually comes out and is evaluated by the many YouTube content creators . . . I may just wait until I see the reviews before deciding. I really have no use for a folding iPhone other than adding this into my private iPhone collection as this will be another milestone device in Apple’s history of iPhones.

I waiting for the Ultra 2 next year, I have a 17 pro max and I’d reporting is true it’s gong to be hard to get at first anyways and like the Air, the Air 2 has updates over one generation and likely do to the ultra specs being available before it rolls out.

Yeah, if a person is careless I can see there will be apparent scratches seen on the folding display. I expect the front screen to be durable and with a screen protector remain pristine.

Yes, there will be defects (even with iPhones), but the certifications show that durability has increased over generations of foldables. And among foldables you've seen fail, what is the breakdown of the models? I bet it skews toward older models versus newer designs. Screen failure can still happen, for sure, but the likelihood has decreased with recent models.

My Fold4 had a severed ribbon cable in the hinge and the screen protector started peeling after a year, but my Fold6 was rock solid and didn't experience any of the issues you described. Both phones were 18 months old. It's just a single data point but if the problems persisted across each generation of foldables then I wouldn't have stayed with it. Fortunately, the hinge design and manufacturing tolerances of the screen and crease get better every year. I would definitely get SamsungCare or AppleCare on a foldable, just like I have it on my wife's iPhone 15 Pro (that stopped registering touch input the first month and was replaced). I know Apple would've replaced her phone regardless without AppleCare since the issue occurred so early, but we still have AppleCare on her phone in case.

I had the flip 6 and I could see the screen starting to get more of a crease and get weird after 5 months of use. Samsung then sent me a 26 ultra which is much better. That being said, I do hope they send me the fold 8 non ultra next time to try. I would not spend my own money on one for long term use, but to have one as a secondary/demo device is neat.

That's surprising on a Flip6. I've only had Folds. I don't really see the point of the Flip series but that's another discussion.

The Fold6 was my primary device for productivity and pleasure and it still looked and performed like new after 18 months. It was so good I skipped the Fold7 because I wanted to keep S Pen support and I wrote a lot on that Fold6 inner screen -- still no marks or scratches but the inner screen was replaced after a year due to some bad pixels. The bad pixels were not near the crease though and I'll try to find a photo of that to add. Insurance rescued me there.

It is unfortunate you see as many foldable failures as you do. You're in the industry, but I'm not sure what that means exactly. If you're a retailer or repair shop then it's expected that people bring their issues to you. You wouldn't encounter the majority of people without foldable issues. Just like we see more complaints in forums versus the vast majority of happy campers.

EDIT: My sincere apologies, I forgot my Fold6 inner screen was replaced due to some bad pixels after 13 months. I loved the Fold6 and honestly forgot it had repair work and have updated the post. I still believe in foldables, but make sure to carry insurance.

The earlier rumors were that the device may magically have no crease due to AppleMagicPro skills. But they also used to claim that 8GB RAM on a Mac was AppleMagicPro skills and wouldn’t cause a problem for people.

Of course this folding thing will have a crease and it will create a structural deficit in the device. Whether people care or not is up in the air … along with the whack price.
