Personally, I see this as the best foldable design...

Of course, the major hurdle is making each panel thin enough for pocketability, so it’s a design for a few generations from now.

Yeah I agree, if they can make this a thin device it's in my opinion the best way to fold.

When folded you have 1/3 of the screen on the outside for one-handed use and 2/3 of the screen safely hidden away and protected on the inside.
When unfolded you get three times the size of the outside screen, which would make it closer to a real tablet instead of only doubling your size like must current concepts.

We are still a while away before we have a viable solution like this in our pockets, but the start is there now. It can go quickly if all big manufacturers focus on it.

I think the Xiaomi prototype implementation is the best one to keep the thickness of the phone relativity small. They should use one single piece of a panel which can be folded on three sides. The benefits of this is the normal front panel mode is much more useable. It's bigger and it doesn't have that weird long but small width display. It also looks much better.

I agree, but it’s a scratch magnet, whichever way you place it down - big negative.

But if you're talking about the Edge Panels which started with the S6 Edge, that was not a failure at al.

No one interjected anything about the Edge being a ‘failure’ of any sort, nor was that even the point behind my example, you Just interjected something unnecessary . Just to reiterate, The S6 edge was and is technology that never was adopted by Apple for XYZ reasons, point being, when it was introduced, Apple was scrutinized for not innovativing the edge technology, but the edge design wasn’t the future of what a smart phone needed to be for the consumer, especially when concepts like the edge faded. (Hence, what a foldable _could_ be like in the future.)

foldable?!? yeah, because moving parts is such a good idea... How many times will it work until the flexcables are off?

Just to add to the scratch magnet argument. I gather that that seems to be a concern, but I still think that depends how you take care your device. If you have somebody that’s hard on their devices, naturally it will occur damage. But even in the day when smart phones utilizing ‘cheap plastic screens’ offered, I never had that problem with scratches, because I always was cautious with my devices.

I’m confident Samsung tested the durability with opening and closing, that had to be something the engineers considered when manufacturing this product, but yes, I think it depends on the amount of cycles that a Foldable is opened and closed for long-term reliability that internal components start to weaken and break or fall apart. Using quality and strong structural components is crucial with a product like this.

Past tech...maybe. But all tech evolves. Never underestimate things like this. It’ll get better & last longer.

Do you use cases with your phones? Because I see that (& screen protectors) as the only way you can prevent scratches. With the Xiaomi, I can’t see a way of putting a case on it, hence my concern of scratches.

I don’t disagree that screen protectors and cases are the only way to protect against scratches, and I would be interested to have hands on experience with a foldable display to see what the durability is like. But no, I don’t use any type of protective cases or screen protectors on my phone, and they usually remain in pristine condition. (But that’s just me taking care of my devices beyond how most are).

I’m assuming we should see some scratch tests eventually that will surface in the next month once the foldable device actually becomes available for more ‘hands-on reviews’ . That should be interesting to see.

Wow the Huawei Mate X is stunning. If it's priced right I'm going to get one.

People who thought it's going to take a while before the foldable phones become a thing are wrong. I suspect from next year a lot of phone companies are going to release one.

Hands down the best foldable phone design wise. It just looks so good. Better than what Samsung came up with.
[doublepost=1551010219][/doublepost]Oppo is going to make one as well.

That Mate X looks very impressive! I didn't expect it to look so good in both folded and unfolded state. There are almost no bezels and there is no notch or hole punch. This looks very futuristic.

There is also a live video showcasing it:

Looks like there is a big wave of new designs coming....Hopefully Apple did not rest on the iPhone X design work also on something new. Otherwise the iPhone might look very dated soon...(even the conservative Galaxy 10 looks fresher with no notch at the moment...)

Huawei did exactly what I wanted. Made the main display large enough to be regulary useable to my liking.

But it looks like the main display and size of the phone itself is too large for my liking.

I'll wait until someone comes out with the perfect dimensions.

Like I said, where would apple get the displays they need. Samsung will want to keep this to themselves for a period of time, as its a game changing technology.
since huawei uses samsung panels...there is no problem

I’d never pay 2 grand for a phone regardless of features. Seeing as Samsung have unveiled a foldable smartphone I think it’s safe to assume Apple are at least 4 years away from trying anything similar. It took them half a decade to introduce OLED and even then they made out it was a premium feature and only reserved it for their expensive niche devices. His is a little too experimental for Apple at this stage lol.

Nope. Just as the other foldables we are seeing, it doesn’t help fix any problems and are really the worst of both worlds when it comes to a phone and tablet. No doubt that Apple would provider a better overall experience in regards to both hardware and software, but I am definitely not clamoring for such a hybrid device.

I’m afraid of the price. Samsung’s is 2K and the Mate X is $2,600. Apple will probably price it at 3K.

It’s only technology. If Apple can’t get it this week, it doesn’t mean they can never get it. Maybe next year or the year after, the question is whether a foldable screen phone is a good idea?
[doublepost=1551461288][/doublepost]
The major difference is that Samsung is just doing this for the sake of technology. Apple only runs with it when it can actually make a product better, when there's a point in it, when they've found a way to make it useful and integrate it into the design.

If the iPhone Fold is ever released, it will be because Apple HAS found a way to make both experiences better as one product.
Good point! I think the concept of a pocketable phone which is a compact phone but also a small tablet is a great idea. It deserves a lot of thought and consideration, now that foldable OLED is becoming feasible.

Intriguing. I’m not very interested in having a folding phone, but if I were to have one, this is the one I’d be most interested in, mostly because I was (am) so fond of my original moto razr, but also this implementation seems the best so far to me. Screen on the inside, smallish size when folded (hopefully thin), screen on the outside for basic info, great looking design. I actually like the chin—aesthetically and functionally it’ll make it easier to hold in landscape. But I wonder how the unfolded phone will feel in hand and how easy it will be to use one-handed. And how big is this phone??

But the two main things this and all foldable phones hinge on (pun intended) are how thin and durable companies can make them. I don’t want a thick folded phone in my pocket, and I don’t want something I have to worry about failing in a year. Two pretty challenging hurdles.

Interesting.... I'm more interested in the concept of a hand-holdable phone which can have its screen double in size to mini-tablet.
