It's surprising what one can read into sales figures!

Compare fiscal quarters 3 & 4 of 2007 with the same quarters in 2008 and the first quarter of 2008 with the same quarter of 2009. You will see that during these periods, sales actually INCREASED! :)

Seems someone here can't read graphs.

I see the iPhone on the TV Show "Chuck" all the time. Chuck has an iPhone and I'm pretty sure his girlfriend/spy has one too.

This is probably the dumbest post I've EVER seen on this board... And that's really saying something.

[Huge Snip]

Congrats, you successfully found the details and the way the iPhone behaves towards the end of life cycle.

Sorry to be blunt. Best Buy and Walmart can do whatever they want. Other sites report what they want. Its called the hype of the moment. TV shows put out what they want.

Sales mean squat when you are talking about x-mas sales which are always high compared to the rest of the year.

The App Store is great as it also makes you wonder, which device the App Store goes to. So, its a great thing.

Sorry to be blunt, nothing interesting. Also, Tallest Skill signature speaks truths right now. Already has been posted.

Lets hope Apple has something revolutionary coming.

Let's hope you get your facts straight and relevant. At least where I live, the iPhone is very popular. My relatives in China and other Asian countries still are drooling for an iPhone. Just because the product is not featured in as many places as the launch days doesn't mean it's losing popularity. Some of your data is from Wikipedia, anyone with internet can edit that.

I'm not looking to defend the iPhone or bash it, frankly, I don't care - its selling anyway, and I'm a BlackBerry user.

But FYI, the iPhone has been in House, 100% - and I'm pretty sure I've seen it in Gossip Girl, but I could be wrong.

I have seen the iphone on house a few times and on a few other shows too. I am not sure what the OP point is. Who cares about product placement anyway, I dont see coke on tv that much or ads for it, but it still out sells pepsi.

As for the iphone not being on TV, I see an AD for the apps store at least 3 times a night when I watch tv.

There are so many external factors that can explain why the graph looks the way it does.

One of the main explanations is the economy. In December of 2007, American's had a lot more money than they do today. After the financial markets and job markets tank as they have, less people will want to buy a $200 phone that requires a $30 data plan and a $5 at minimum text plan.

Also, who cares if it isn't featured in a lot of shows as of now? Apple is preparing an update to the line, and then it will become cool again. The Blackberry Storm is a terrible phone, and I can tell you several people I know have returned it to Verizon and gone with the iPhone. Don't worry. Apple will surprise us once again in June and you'll see iPhone fever hit the streets once again.

I seem to recall about 2,000,000 jobs being lost in the last year alone.

EVERYTHING is losing popularity.

We've lost 5,000,000 jobs since this recession has begun. The fact that the iPhone sold more this Christmas than last is actually a good sign. You can't just look at sales exclusive from everything else.

I have been and Mac/Apple fan boy since the day I first sat down at a computer! I actually liked it when Apple was least popular. The point was I loved it and it was cool.

Who gives a flying crap if the iPhone loses popularity? I love it, my friends love it, and that is all that matters... it has always been that way for me.

One day, Apple may be the least popular again... but I will still love it.

Who's with me?

Dood, watch Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Countdown, The Colbert Report, the Daily Show and The Rachel Maddow Show. They all use iPhones, and those are their personal phones, it's not even product placement.

As to the graph, do you NOT see the growth pattern? Seriously, you crack me up.

It's called PRODUCT Placement!

Hey, when you see Blackberries on TV shows, when you see Mark Harmon on NCIS sucking down Starbucks coffee, when you see certain brands of cars driven, . . . it's NOT because they are "cool" and it's not because the products are HOT -- it's because the companies have paid BIG BUCKS for their products to appear in the show -- so you subliminally programmed to aware of the product and connect it with your "hero."

It's a great push with advertising companies these days, what with fast-forwarding through ads with TiVo and other DVRs. And you don't run to the john or to get a carton of ice-cream during the show like you do during ads.

So, don't be deluded into thinking these hypnotic ads in your favorite shows are anything but PAID advertising!

And when you see your favorite commentator using a particular tech product, KNOW they either get it for free or are paid to bandy it around and say "gee, I just love this!"

Some people love what their idol loves, viz, Oprahmania! Her endorsement is golden!

All this thread makes me think about is:

Fact_Beets.jpg

For what it's worth Mythbusters uses an iPhone, and it's not a product placement because it's cased (you can only tell it's an iPhone by the apps they use).

But FYI, the iPhone has been in House, 100% - and I'm pretty sure I've seen it in Gossip Girl, but I could be wrong.

Can someone confirm this! The popularity like hinges on this small fact. It's not like BB like paid the WB or something. GG must like actually like use the iPhone.

Maybe, just maybe it's because the new iPhone is coming out soon, so people have stopped buying the 3G and are waiting for the next iPhone?

I doubt most regular consumers pay attention to rumors. I suspect that any drop in sales might have something to do with the fact that people are losing their jobs by the troves, and luxury items like smart phones are probably some of the first things that are cut from the budget.
