I can understand lack of 3G in the US but in the UK its coverage is almost complete

When you say "complete", do you mean "as good as it's ever going to get"? Because unless you live in a biggish town or city it's far from complete coverage. No 3G in our town (Oxfordshire, hardly the back of beyond) and no likelihood of it turning up any time soon. See the man's map above.

Surely Britain has a almost complete cover of 3G? I know vodafone here in Ireland have 3G almost everywhere. I can't remember the last time I didn't see the 3G logo on my phone go off

Can you see the map I just posted above? Very low coverage. Other netwroks are a little better but not much.

O2 coverage in Ireland (dark pink is 3G). Remember in cities wifi is a better option anyway so pointless having 3G there.

Surely there has to be a way to negotiate those tariffs on a per consumer basis. Like threatening to leave (especially as a loyal customer) and then telling them you'll reconsider and even buy an iphone but they have to give you 400 mins and 300 texts (rollover) plus the other stuff at the same £35/month for 18 months.

Im trying to sell myself into the these tariffs but its just not computing. Then i look at the German announcement where they have to pay £277+2 year lockdown and think can i really be complaining?

Interesting point... that's how I go my great contract with vodafone.

"WHY THE IPHONE MAY COST YOU £900
After the long-awaited launch of Apple's iPhone in the UK yesterday, the Times claims that customers could end up paying in the region of £900 for the device. At the launch, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs revealed that the basic handset will cost customers £269 while they must also sign up to a minimum 18-month contract with 02 costing £35 to £55 a month. This means that, depending on the tarrif you choose, an 18-month contract could set you back between £899 and £1,259. Apple's first foray into the mobile phone market combines a phone, MP3 player and internet browser for the first time in one slick package. "Sometimes you get what you pay for," contested Jobs at yesterday's launch, before announcing that the iPhone will go one sale in Britain on 9 November."

i'm sure i read something about mins and texts rolling over but can't find it again, anyone else seen this, i'm sure they rolled into the next month and then you start again

I'm not sure I agree, I'm almost certain they have to sell it at the advertised price (except where E&OE is stated).

Nope, that's not correct: If they choose to sell it to you then it will have to be at the advertised price, but if they can simply refuse to sell you it.

Hang on with that map - the dark blue areas are HSDPA (ie. so fast you can stream TV programmes). Parts of the lighter blue areas are still 3G, just at much slower speeds (R99) - but still considerably faster than crappy EDGE!

With 3G or not, with best EDGE or not, with its 2000 minutes or not the total cost of iPhone will be 1259 quid. This is a price for an Mac Book adding a bit of extra will cover the cost for a MacBook Pro. Simply said, the person who will "invest" in such a device is either full of money or just iresponsible with his budget. I am an Apple fan too, yes I do. I do like my Mac I do like my iPod but now Apple has just crossed the line betwen taking economical advantages from a beautiful device and ripping off without any sign of respect.
The prices in EUR region are simply outrageous, 50 euros / month x 24 is 1200 EUR + the 399 the price of the device will put that to 1599 EUR grand total.

Ok, say I wanted a 'decent' phone + iPod today. Right, lets check out the Tmobile website - often thought to have very good packages.

Flext 20 + web'n'walk (18 months) - most similar tariff is £22.50 p/m
£219.99 for the Nokia N95
£6.99 p/m The Cloud
£199 iPod Touch 8Gb
£5 p/m voicemail costs (calculated from my past usage)

Grand total = £1039.81

So, for me the iPhone and O2's package is good value indeed. I will be getting one :)

I'm glad the press are giving this a hard time. People are going to be so angry that they've been tied into an 18 month contract with an outdated phone in a few months when the first 3G models come off the production line.

Even Steveo has said it's on its way. Cue the same thing happening in the UK as it did with US customers and the price drop! Only this time it will be about being duped into buying a model that uses technology from five years ago and shouldn't have ever really been released to the market.

I do want the new iPod interface and the ability to check my mail etc. on the move. But I think I'm going to get a 16GB iPod Nano Touch though and a £6.99 Cloud subscription. Then I'll be free to move onto an iPhone when it's closer to "everything I want" next year. Then I'll be quite happy to commit to it for 18 months.

Who really wants to be using a phone on GPRS until May 2009?!

They should have made it 3G even if it doesn't mean that much. Its too hard a sell.
The headlines are saying it will cost 1000 pounds AND its obsolete technology. That's what the papers are picking up on, rightly or wrongly.

They should just make it bigger (for 3G) and they could happily justify the price without having to be on the defence all the time.

So does anyone know if in the UK we get...

Push e-mail?

Will the phone automatically log onto a suitable wi-fi spot when it sees one? - or do you have to log it in everytime you sit in a cafe/pub/restraunt that has one?

Will o2 be supporting all the features of AT&T's service, push e-mail, 3 way calling, visual voicemail, rollover minutes, etc

Anyone know the answers to the above, id like to know if we're missing out on anything the US users get - and rollover minutes would be quite useful.

my broadband is with sky and their netgear wireless router, I use the erthernet cable as the phone line is next to my mac.
will the iphone simply pick up the router and I'm on wifi?

depends on if you have any wireless security - wep/wpa etc.. then you'll have the enter the password on the iPhone
