The UK press isn't giving it a good reception

Usual knee-jerk reaction to the price difference between the UK and the US.

I'd challenge anyone to find any electronics product over $30 which costs the same in the UK as it does in the USA. In fact that probably goes for stuff other than electronics, just that it's the most prominent with that. Apple are actually better than most when it comes to this.

exactly, why are they not knocking the ipod touches price of £199, for an extra £70 your getting a phone, a camera and texting.

Only this time it will be about being duped into buying a model that uses technology from five years ago and shouldn't have ever really been released to the market.

I'm pretty sure EDGE didn't exist 5 years ago, or at least wasn't rolled out to any significant degree.

I do want the new iPod interface and the ability to check my mail etc. on the move. But I think I'm going to get a 16GB iPod Nano Touch though and a £6.99 Cloud subscription. Then I'll be free to move onto an iPhone when it's closer to "everything I want" next year. Then I'll be quite happy to commit to it for 18 months.

If that works for you, cool. No mail on the Touch though.

Who really wants to be using a phone on GPRS until May 2009?!

Who cares what it's on if it works OK, as most of the US users seem to think it does?

Forget the contract all of a sudden did we?

Of course not. Assuming you have a mobile contract anyway (as I do) there are many advantages to this phone even though they could have been a little more generous with the talk time allowance on the lower plans.

You pay your money and make your choice.

If you can't afford it, then I sympathise.

It did exist. Is 30% a significant degree? It sucks.

back to the doom and gloom!
I think if you really think about the contract it's not bad, it's the added insurance that's bothering me. Someone mentioned home insurance does anyone know anything about this?
oh and can someone from the US say how much applecare for the phone is. I'm £140 for my imac so I'm hoping for around £70

Insurance will be additional to home insurance - check your policy though.

Good luck if you want to buy it. More money than sence (no offence). I will stick to 500 mins, 500 txts at £15 a month and a free phone every year (e.g. I got the W880i for free even though they were charging others).

none taken my friend, but yes I will buy it and cannot wait, the 200 mins and 200 texts are just right for me along with the unlimited data.
I'm prepared to pay that bit extra for a device such as this.

I'm not sure that's fair. It's more expensive than the US bt not by that much when taxes etc are all taken into account.

OK, maybe that's not fair, but neither's the tariff. The reason I voted negative, and said 'more money than sense' is because to me, this really isn't a good deal. It's a nice phone, but getting email all the time might actually annoy me now I have come to think about it. I hardly use my phone any more, the odd call here and there, texts to friends. Paying £35 per month just seems silly to me. buying a phone for nearly £300 and then paying £35-55 seems really silly to me - I would rather save that money u over a year and get a MBP.

Sorry if I caused anyone offence - I didn't mean to. I just think that this is not a good deal. If you do get one, enjoy it and get the most out of it! :)

Those instructions only work for the iPhone. That site cut and pasted for the Touch.

Currently there's no way of jailbreaking a Touch.....yet.

Yes, I noticed the note at the top of the page on "Jailbreaking the iPod Touch" saying the instructions don't work at the moment. But as you say, it's a "yet". They're working on it. :)

I dont think anyone's taken offence.

It depends on who's buying this device. I get by on 100 texts/100 mins a month (£17.50). However I would like access to the web and email everywhere. This kind of (if EDGE was ubiquitous) gives it to me.

It's a proper luxury item though and you need the disposable income to afford it. If you're worried about the budget then I guess its not for you.

Personally: I might get it. Better EDGE coverage and 16GB come January might swing it for me.

It's hardly a bargain though I grant you that.

For some weird reason, I love 3G. If it had 3G and was 16GB then I might be 50-50 on this. It's just the way I feel. If it was on all networks too - then it would be more like 70-30.

I deffo want to play on one. Hopefully that won't tempt me.

no apple product is a bargain!
cheapest imac in the UK is £799, you get what you pay for.

Am i invisibe on here? Ive raised some valid points and questions that need addressing, not the moot point of someones constant opinion if the basic o2 contact is worth the money or not...

At your request :)

So does anyone know if in the UK we get...

Push e-mail?

Most likely with Yahoo but not confirmed

Will the phone automatically log onto a suitable wi-fi spot when it sees one? - or do you have to log it in everytime you sit in a cafe/pub/restraunt that has one?

Yes. Depends whether it is open or not. It saves passwords though for future sessions.

Will o2 be supporting all the features of AT&T's service, push e-mail, 3 way calling, visual voicemail, rollover minutes, etc

Visual voicemail, yes. Rollover minutes not confirmed but likely. 3 Way/conference/merging calls yes.
