Apple really screwed up by releasing both the iPhone SE and iPhone Mini at basically the same time.

After I upgraded my iPhone SE (2016) to the 2020 version after a very long wait for another small phone, Apple released the iPhone 12 mini only a few short months later. I wasn't going to be updating again so soon!

And then they released the iPhone 13 mini in September 2021, but my iPhone SE 2020 was still working great and I felt no need to upgrade.

In 2022 they released an incremental iPhone SE 2022 upgrade, which I did get so that I could hand-me-down my iPhone SE 2020 -- which is still working great!

I really don't understand why they released TWO small phones. All things equal I'd have gotten the iPhone 12 mini had it came out before the SE, because it is slightly smaller.

Same scenario here. Steve Jobs would riot. Logical thing would be to make the Mini the new SE, for us folks surrounded by screens who just need a pocket phone that doesn't feel like a brick.

This is a very strange thread. There are a handful of folks here who seem to be positively delighted that those of us who prefer small iPhones won't have that option anymore. 🤷‍♂️
It's been that way since day 1 with the 12 mini.

While I don't understand the demand for the Pro Max, I accept it. The fact that those who prefer those larger phones are outright elated that the closest thing that we find to be the best form factor is going away is some sort of deranged selfishness.

It's as if they are happy when others are unhappy.

Those interested in smaller phones are not people willing to spend a lot of money. I'm interested in smaller phones, but I don't need/want the latest and greatest.
Yeah, I wouldn't generalize your needs to everyone else. I'm sure there are people who want the best and most up-to-date phone as possible, but in a smaller form factor. That was kind of the point of the Mini, to decouple "inexpensive" from "smaller".

Steve would never have done this.

Jokes aside I certainly see a future for the mini line replacing the SE. Maybe being updated every few years with decent, but not cutting edge, specs and sold at an affordable price. I’d also make it a bit thicker to accommodate a larger battery.

Although I’m not sure Cook and the current blockheads in charge appreciate it enough to actually make this happen.

If I had a dollar for every time someone said this…

I’m not on either side of this small vs big phone topic but saying what someone that died over a decade ago would do is silly.
No no, I think they have a point. Steve was 100% against large screen phones. He absolutely wanted everything to be reachable using only your thumb (it was one of the selling features of the first iPhone)

Steve was against the iPad. Steve was also smart enough to know he didn’t know everything and trusted the people who worked for him. People like Tim Cook.

Of course, but they also need to eliminate any artificial speed limits on USB type C connections. This business of holding any current phone to USB 2.0 speeds is ridiculous.
What makes you think there would be artificial speed limits? There could be limitations caused by whatever chips are used. I don’t think a USB 2.0 thumb drive is artificially limited to USB 2.0.

I agree that artificially limiting the speed would be ridiculous

Absolutely. Rename it iPhone Mini. Update it every 3 years. Keep it at $500 to start.
Exactly what this guy is saying. Totally totally this.

My poor wife has tiny tiny hands, she's short, we need the mini in this house and her 12 won't last forever and a 13 upgrade isn't really much of a leap.

Gladly buy 2024s "iPhone mini gen 3' and then 2027s iPhone mini gen 4 etc

Sigh.

What I want in a phone is small size (easy to put in my pocket) and able to run basic apps (calendar, notes, web browser, my library’s app, some news apps, podcasts, email, social media,… and the occasional phone call). I don’t need a pro camera or anything like that. I’m not doing 3D gaming or the like with it. I spend most of my “connected” time on a computer, rather than phone.

My phone is not a primary device for me, so I prefer a compact size. I hope that in coming years Apple finds a way to make a compact “pocket-sized” device again.

the problem with the "mini" series of the iphone and ipad is that they get worse specs. I would love to use the mini 13 and the ipad mini but they max out at 256GB (I want at least 512GB) and they have worse screens. I'd love a iphone mini with pro motion and 512GB but that's not the mini we got.

All things {other} aside . . . the iPhone 13-mini definitely has a 512GB storage option:

;)

oh i must have missed that! the 12 mini definitely didn't have 512

Yes; it [edit: the 12-mini] definitely maxxed storage @256

I had the option to get the 512GiB 13-Mini in-store, but I stuck with the 256GiB ver. as I've never used anywhere close to that.

I brutalise the fsck out of my daily-carry, so [considering this rumoured news] I may snag another for backup before Stock reaches zero.

My first iPhone was the first-gen SE, which I liked.
Then I bought an iPhone 7, which is my current phone and which I consider too large.

I can't imagine buying a phone larger than an iPhone 7.

I'd probably look to Android or even a basic voice-centric flip phone like my old Samsung Convoy rather than use a phone bigger than an iPhone 7. First-gen SE size really is ideal.

If I wanted an iPad, I'd buy an iPad.
