iPhone OS 3.0 Launching June 17th

Sooooo…

No real network speed bump here in the US.
No MMS until "late summer"
No tethering in the US
US customers upgrading from an iPhone 3G will have to pay either $299 (8GB), $399 (16GB), or $499 (32GB) - per Apple fine print

Yeah…nothing to see here. I'll keep my money in my pocket.

AT&T and Apple can suck it. The sad thing is, upgraders and early adopters are your real evangelists. This is going to hurt the adoption of the phone without a doubt.

Yeah how ridiculous on the US customer upgrade price. I was set to order one thinking they were treating the ole faithful customers with some favor but apparently not.. add to that the $18 ATT "upgrade fee" and on top of that the $18 ATT "activation fee". Very poor planning if you ask me (which they did not, ha) but they'll see nowhere near the sales volume on this one.

Well AT&T did say they are allowing tethering, but nothing official yet(from engadget)

The upgrading thing gets me...but the original iPhone was 499/599...and since the iPhone was subsided for 3G, not to suprising.

As much money as AT&T makes and the increased data planes and additional charges for text messages they could have allowed people who upgraded to 3g in the first week or so to upgrade on the 19th with the subsidized pricing.

I upgraded the day it was released. I would upgrade again on the 19th but I'm not going to pay a premium.

All I can do is remember this when the iPhone goes to a new carrier. AT&T is going to be back peddling trying to save subscribers from leaving. They should make everybody fond of them now! That's one of the reason Apple is so successful is they really account for their customers (Snow Leopard $29)

I'll be buying one.

I'm still on a first gen model, so to me this is a significant upgrade! I'm especially excited about the better camera and the larger RAM, plus I only have an 8GB model and would prefer a 16GB. I think the compass will also be useful in games and I can definitely see how it would be useful when reading maps. Also, the first gen model has a terrible speaker on it and the call quality is not that great compared to the 3G.
I can probably sell my first gen model online for $100 and upgrade to the 3GS for only $100. Not a bad deal. I have a family plan with unlimited texting and the iPhone data plan, so I only pay $53 a month for everything.
I can see how people might be angry at AT&T for not supporting these features, but I think Apple did a great job and with this. I agree that many of the features are available in the 3.0 update, which should make you happy.

This is depressing. I'm usually one of the guys lining up for a release like this, but not this year. I was planning on adding a line to my account with ATT to get the new iPhone subsidized but now am debating. My contract is up in January and if Verizon enters the picture I'm jumping ship. Bye bye ATT.

Just checked to see if I qualify for an upgrade to the new iphone 3Gs. They want me to dish out $399 to upgrade from my existing iphone 3G to 3Gs which I find ridiculous. This is not including the upgrading fee of $18 and another $18 for changing the phones. This all comes out to $435. Existing iphone owners should pay the same for the iphone 3Gs as customers with new contracts.

Why? Why should iPhone users be treated differently than customers with other phones, or even other providers? If you're still on your 2 year contract, you don't get subsidized pricing on a new phone. That's the way the industry works.

Oh for God's sake. What a bunch of crying babies.

Having to wait a couple of months for MMS... waaggghhhh!!!

Perhaps not getting tethering (although that's not certain and it is in AT&T's interest to offer it).....waaaaagggghhh!!!

It's your own fault for living in a backwards country. Mind you, it will be pretty funny if users in Niger get these features before Yanks.

Get some perspective and stop acting like spoiled brats.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes,we should all move to another nations, so we can tether our iPhones and send MMS early..pleassseee

I don't understand all the complaints. AT&T is allowing you to upgrade from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS on your 1-year anniversary, which for those that bought the iPhone 3G at launch is in July.

That seems fair to me. It's only a month.

I am a first gen owner and while I like the iPhone, I despise AT&T. In NYC, AT&T/iPhone is not what I would consider a viable mobile phone solution. Embarassingly poor coverage.

It's hard for me to rationalize the purchase of an upgrade if I'm going to be locked in for another 2 years to a service that basically doesn't work. Is Verizon actually on the horizon?

Wait, ATT is allowing iPhone 3g users to upgrade to the 3GS for only $199/$299?

Wow. AT&T really looked bad today.
No tethering.
No MMS.
No price restructuring (per their CEO's comments).
No point.

Does anyone else feel this is the last AT&T-exclusive iPhone?

They told me that on the phone. They said I would need to wait until my 1-year anniversary which is in July.

The CSR told me I would have to probably buy at the AT&T Store instead of Apple Store to get the correct pricing.

Edit: This was for one of my additional family lines that has a 3G. I personally have the original iPhone on my "main" line. And the early upgrade may be based on your account. I plan on waiting until AT&T releases an upgrade document with official pricing. I'm sure they're working on that.

really ATT?

i had MMS on my first edition RAZR 5 years ago.

ATT is awful. purely awful.

when exclusive rights to the iPhone are up in this country, I am jumping ship.

No, they're not. I purchased the iPhone 3G on the first day it was available in July 2008 and AT&T is telling me that my upgrade date to get the reduced iPhone 3GS pricing is March 2010.

Well this is what it says in fine print

Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)

It says 'or replace an iPhone 3G'

Did you call them? Or just go by what Apple tells you on the site. Because what Apple's site tells me is December, but the CSR said July after the 1-year anniversary.

This was a launch date iPhone 3G.

Needless to say, I think we should all wait until the official upgrade spec docs are out.

Message to Apple: DUMP ATT!

Ubiquitous features on almost all phones and carriers NOT ready until "end of summer"? Upgrade price for a current customer will be $499 for a 32GB phone, but a new user only $199. No tethering, with rumors claiming it might cost as much as $70/month when/if it ever does appear. Really crappy 3G and cell coverage in downtown Chicago, the 3rd largest city in the US. ATT sucks. When will this exclusivity option end? Might be time to jailbreak. I wish I knew the downsides to jailbreaking. Have to look into it.

What about Fido/Rogers?

Any words on the Fido/Rogers rate if you're a 3g user? Is it as bad as AT&T? I'm a day one 3G user and I'm seriously wondering if the switch to 3GS is worth it.

I would call customer service but I'm pretty sure they'll be as clueless as I am right now

Why does AT&T suck so much? I mean really what reason could they have for not enabling MMS until the end of summer? Because their network cant handle it? Come on, this is stupid.

Does going to this new 7.2 3G make the network inherently more stable? If it doesn't I think they need to worry about taking care of their stability issues as opposed to making it easier to overwhelm the network with higher bandwidth and more data.

I think it's 1 of 3 reasons:
1) AT$T network is overwhelmed as it is and they don't want bandwidth hogs on it right now. Case in point, when 3G rolled out I saw at least a one bar hit (and even though they initially denied it a VP later said their network took a big hit). One month ago I saw another one bar decrease and I am now at 1 bar and getting dropped calls. AT$T again denies anything going on (7.2 upgrade and moving over 2G capacity anyone?) and in fact blames it on the trees, Apple and/or God.
2) The greedy mofo's can't quite figure out a pricing plan to ream us yet.
3) OR Apple is still negotiating with other carriers and AT$T is holding their rollout of the new stuff as a carrot (if other carriers can't handle it?).
