Why no new touch?

Why is there no new iPod touch with the same features as the new iphone?

Today's announcements are great updates if you are a 1st Gen. iPhone owner (like me), but nobody is going to jump on board for a video camera from the 3G. It's not a great video camera to begin with. I almost see this as a push for the original 3G iPhone rather than the 3G.

Just when I think I have figured out Apple, they go an pull something strange like this.

I find it kind of funny how all these features are now available with the phone, but AT&T is handicapping it.

"The iPhone has this feature, but it won't work until AT&T is ready"

You might as well not even announce the features to AT&T customers and just surprise us with the "new" features that magically start working on our phones.

Sooooo…

No real network speed bump here in the US.
No MMS until "late summer"
No tethering in the US
US customers upgrading from an iPhone 3G will have to pay either $299 (8GB), $399 (16GB), or $499 (32GB) - per Apple fine print

Yeah…nothing to see here. I'll keep my money in my pocket.

AT&T and Apple can suck it. The sad thing is, upgraders and early adopters are your real evangelists. This is going to hurt the adoption of the phone without a doubt.

So how is this any different than other US based mobile phone and/or media based companies (i.e. satellite television and/or phone companies) in not taking care of their existing customers and only offering more incentive to attract new customers?

It sure would be a great thing for a service company (like AT&T) to offer an incentive to existing customers, perhaps to say "Hey, were glad you are a customer or thanks for continually paying your bill on time ".

I suppose "earning your business" doesn't involve as much anymore when you have an exclusive product and/or service - which is too bad.

The iPod touch is getting a software update, but that's all for now.

Gotta feel for you AT&T customers, I was not expecting this mess.

Copy & Paste

Maybe AT&T will figure out a way to charge for copy & paste between now and June 17?

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I don't use MMS so that's no biggie for me (although I do have a texting plan and I wonder if that will be incorporated)

I have a text messaging plan, I asked. MMS aren't included. It's 15¢.

I guess those of us who've been kicking ourselves for not getting NetShare when it was available can finally relax. Tethering will be possible as of June 17th :D

They must be concerned their network will crash if the ubiquitous iPhone is used to send video. Expect it to be added when they upgrade the network.

this is gay! get it done people! you don't sit around when you have an exclusive with a phone that draws the highest bandwidth of any phone to date... apple should be extremely pissed at at&t

whatever it takes you make it happen or apple takes their product elsewhere

Not that great for U.S.A

With all the limitations due to AT&T lack of support, this version of the software has lost a bit of it's luster.

We shall see how much money does AT&T wants to let us use features that other carriers will be supporting.

I wonder how many complains will Apple get due to AT&T lack of support for those features, after all customers that go to the Apple web site can see all the features but if they use AT&T they can not have the feature.

I Wonder how long will that last

Thank God for NetShare!!!

Thank God for NetShare!!! :D:D:D

Hopefully someday AT&T will allow us to use Tethering..... (Fat Chance!)

Bs

I think that it is ridocous that we have to wait from march they taunt us with 3.0. then we have to wait another week and a half to get this. Then on top of all this we wont have MMS for the whole summer. you got to be kidding me.

Why is there no new iPod touch with the same features as the new iphone?

iPod Touchs get updated with the rest of the iPods in September. And also they don't want the Touch to have all the same features because they want people to buy the iPhone more than the Touch.

I'm so confused. ATT said they won't allow tethering, but does that mean they will never allow it, or is it like MMS. Where it will be available later this summer?

...
I have an iphone 3G with an underclocked arm proccessor (600->400mhz), why don't they put it at full speed as in ipod touch 2.0 or in iphone 3GS?? -->> TO SELL US AN IPHONE 3GS
...

I think you may be wrong.

Reliable sources (like DaringFireball) have suggested a NEW processor, much faster than a clockspeed change alone could cause. A take-apart may reveal the truth, but that seems highly likely. Clocking an iPhone 3G up won't make it nearly as fast as a 3GS.

Also, underclocking to begin with was NOT just done so that they could sell you another phone a year later. It actually impacts battery life (and a phone needs battery for more things--and more IMPORTANT things--than an iPod). Sometimes underclocking is just a legitimate engineering choice, not a secret evil scheme :p

Re video, I WAS hoping to have that software on my 3G. But it was evidently written specifically for the 3GS and its autofocus (and maybe more horsepower to process and edit video). So that same exact software wouldn't work on a 3G, and Apple apparently decided not to modify it for the 3G. So... second-best option: I'd love it if a 3rd party stepped up! (Can 3rd parties now access the 3G camera, as they can with the 3GS?)

At&t = Fail

AT&T, Have you NO SHAME?

Contrary to a beacon on technology, AT&T has proved itself a beacon of backward-thinking technophobes! I think the feature availability (or lack thereof) from AT&T proves the U.S. cell market is FUBAR! I bet Verizon could steal ATT customers by the millions by simply offering to pay the termination fee and supporting iPhone features!

SHAME, SHAME on you AT&T!!!

iphone 3Gs pricing for existing customers

Just checked to see if I qualify for an upgrade to the new iphone 3Gs. They want me to dish out $399 to upgrade from my existing iphone 3G to 3Gs which I find ridiculous. This is not including the upgrading fee of $18 and another $18 for changing the phones. This all comes out to $435. Existing iphone owners should pay the same for the iphone 3Gs as customers with new contracts.

AT&T is pathetic right now. They are the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the US and have been for two years now, yet they have none of the new features ready for 3.0. On top of that they aren't allowing current 3G owners subsidized pricing on the 3GS. What a load of ****. I really hope this hurts their sales for being unprepared and making dumb decisions.

I really dont even know what to say about AT&T right now! Im seriously lost for words..
All this time of NOT jail breaking my phone and having faith in Apple/AT&T.... What a fricken joke!

Just an FYI, MMS is coming out on June 17th too

I'm just wondering if ATT will ever allow tethering and if so how much its going to cost.

Based on their 7.2 and LTE news release they have a back haul bandwidth shortage generally nationwide they are scheduled to address this summer. This indicates to me their network is sufficiently saturated at peak usage, not adding even more ability to use it by tethered devices is purely a network capacity management issue.

We know it is not a technical limit and Apple, their buddy and partner, even announced the feature publicly today specifically stating pretty much everyone but AT&T is offering it on release.

So this confirms my speculation.

The USA is bandwidth crippled generally due to government regulations and tax policy. Might I suggest someone propose a stimulus plan to fix that and roll out LTE early so we can all see real bandwidth and a lot fewer dropped calls, and no rationing of bandwidth by killing tethering, VoIP, and video conferencing.

Rocketman

"AT&T Inc. (T) spokesman Mark Siegel says the carrier will eventually offer both features to customers. Picture and video messaging is due sometime this summer, he said. But Siegel didn't offer a date when tethering, as the other feature's known, will be available.

That's not too bad. It better work when it arrives, however.
